Almost 2mths ago I started your program n I'm getting stronger. I went up to 6 pull ups, but I've been stuck there for a while too. I've been under a lot of stress lately but a huge amt of it was lifted off my shoulders this morning. I've been walking on air since 11am today. I felt pumped when I got home n just for the heck of it I decided to record myself doing pull ups just to compare myself to what you're teaching in this video which I happened to watch a few wks ago. My goal was to do 10 by December. I guess I have to set a new goal bc I managed to do 10 TODAY. I'm stronger. My body is transforming. My husband laughs, but everytime I do a workout, I call it Body by Jeff. I'm 49 n just the other day a lady at the gym said she thought I was in my 30's. I've also berm asked if I'm a body builder. Jeff, I went down (to my basement) last night and experimented with what you explained. I only did 3 pull-ups in the 1st set, no warm-up. Then I rested for 1 minute. Next I did the scapula warm-up you suggest. Then straight into the 2nd set and did 4 pull-ups (+25% increase), whooa. Next, I rested for another minute and did the scapula warm-up again and then right into the 3rd set. This time I did 5 pull-ups (and they all felt much easier than the 1st 3 which seemed a big struggle). Very happy to see a 66% increase over the 1st set just by watching a 5 minute video!!! You got my subscription.

***** Well im not disliking it, but to build real muscle you should do not that much pullups ( just about 10 or so) but with added weight. Muscle reacts to progressive overload, increasing weight, but not to increasing reps. With more reps you are only increasing muscle endurance but not growing them. Scientific research show that muscle can successfully overload with about just 4 to 15 heavy reps and that more breaks down more microtears in your muscles than it can repair and that impairs the muscle growth. So for example I can do 8 reps with my bodyweight but also 8 reps with 10 kg on my back. And that is how everybody should do pullups if they would be aiming for muscle building and not for the show...

Great video Jeff. This is exactly where I fail. One thing that has also helped me stabilize is a set of push ups before making sure I am focusing on squeezing the scapula on the way down. Really forces the shoulders back
This is actually a good cue and trick for stabilizing the scapula. Remember thou, this guy weighs something around 155-165lbs and is 5'8, so doing pull ups for him is ideal. If you are six feet tall and/or weight around 200 lbs or more, pull ups are going to be more challenging. If you are carry extra fat or even extra muscle, that factors into it. This is a great tip on what to do before you start your pull ups, also do pull ups before you go doing anything else for back/arms if this is a weak point for you.

2:12 - hang down, use your scapula only to pull up a bit (don't use your arms) 3:17 - on the pull-up bar, with arms at 90 degrees, push your body out, then bring it back in

Like the speech in the first minute. I don't know why people think it's "cheating" to engage other muscles beyond your target isolation. The reason why some prefer sitting exercises and standing ones as a waste of energy because you're wasting energy. Love understanding and feeling how my muscles work as a unit.
thats not a bad thing. That means they are getting a workout. Assuming you let the muscles replenish you will be able to do more pullups from the start the next time you try
I was j/k....I couldn't tell much difference in the number I can do afterwards but this could work for other people. This guy's advice is actually quite good!

hey Jeff, I'm16, it totally helped me out . B4 trying the scapula shrugs I could only do 6 and 8 at max. But after trying the scapula shrugs I was surprised as I could now do a max of 13 pull ups in 30secs. 30 secs is my school's fitness test standard. So thanks a lot Jeff I really appreciate it.
What else would you kip???? I crossfit and normally do stict weighted pullups. Time and place for everything my friend. Do more research on good crossfitters. The good ones would crush you on any workout you throw at them. Strict or kipping. Lol so go kip up your reply on how terrible crossfit is and they all suck and without a kip they couldnt do anything. Because all we do is kipping pullups.

its because now your are using the right muscles. doing a number of pull ups without forcing the right way can bring you to a higher number. Focusing on wich muscles should work make you doing less rep but more efficient ones. **sorry for my bad english its not my main language**
People who claim they can do 20 lol i beat you can't do 20 proper pull ups. Most of you probably go down halfway. I train upper body a lot and fresh i could probably do about 10-12 proper pull ups.

MaskedArtist80 how long have you been in the gym for. I've been in about a year I'm a skinny fuck but very strong like. I've gone 40 kg on the shoulders on a full routine like so not when I'm fresh. When I first came in I couldn't even do one pull up proper I was swinging on the bar and everything couldn't even do one dip either I have no triceps. Now I do dips easy that I just attach like 20 kg plates to me to make it harder and pull ups I do back straight wide grip no swinging which is kind of cheating. I'm not very good at bench press though cus my arms are very long. Max I ever done was 100 for 3 reps.
lekan adams my gym is outside, all body weight moves, mostly on the pull up bar (hannibal for king got me into it) that was almost 2 years ago, before that I hit the gym like in my younger days for 3 years but nothing serious. My current weight is 79kg im 6 foot, abs starting to show, everyday i train and really starting to get strong, don't know what I could bench i would guess 250

Oldie but goodie. Only 2023 comment. Work out tips that are 9 years old are no better than ones created today, but that’s not how people watch or the algorithm works. This is a great vid providing an isolation exercise for one part of a complex range of motion. From mid-back to hand grip.

I'm a lifelong athlete and was a gymnast in my youth but I could never do a pull up. I never realized it was related to my scapulas. I just started doing the exercises you show in this video, and I'll let you know when I get to my first pullup. Thanks!

Do reverse pullups. What I did was, get on a chair, grab the pull up bar and walk off the chair and hang there, put my feet back on the chair and do it all over again. Now I can do 15 pushups. Went from 0 to 15 in a couple of months. Slow progression, didn't want to hurt myself.

Isometric. If you can reach the bar with your feet on the floor, help yourself with your legs to get on top position, then hold it like 5 seconds and slowly come down. Do 5 reps and then rest like a minute... then do it again. Soon you'll do regular pull-ups or chin-ups. Buy a Perfect Multi-Gym pull up bar from Walmart. It's cheap, the set up is easy, and it fits over the door so you can do these at home. I'm now up to 20 reps a set.
I must say. Thank you very much Jeff. This helped me a lot. My problem is this one. I have the necessary strength, but I don't have a pole to hold onto. Instead I have a slippery tile surface to hold onto, and which doesn't allow me to move my arms that much. It's mostly my biceps doing the lifting, and my fingers trying to not let me slip away. Now I've moved on to the balcony, where the surface is made out of concrete, and where the base isn't that thick, so I can move my arms around. The finger problem still exists, but It's a massive improvement. That combined with your advice has really helped me out a lot. I can still only do 10 pull-ups at the concrete balcony, and around 5 at the slippery tile surface, but right now I am training my base. Your advice has helped me out a lot, to which I thank you.
Now after years n years of trying n lots of failed motivation now I can perform 4 to 5 pull up. I felt great n motivated dt I can now have got my first 4 pull up right.. You have to try doing pull up, best way is to take some assistance from some body who will push you at the time of pull up. To gain strength of increasing pull up reps, you have to do it everyday.
+Rajdip Khan what if you're doing a 4 day upper/lower body split? still recommend doing them everyday? wouldn't it hinder recovery for the next upper body day especially if you're doing rows as well?
long live MAG If you are trying to develop any weak body part, you need to workout it more often than other body parts. When you are not able to do proper pull ups, that means your lat muscle are very weak. It will not be strong unless u hit it more often. For an example you are able to do 3-4 proper pull up in 1st set. after 3-4 you can add another 3-4 with assistance. Continue only 1 set for every day and after 2 week you will be able to do 6-7 pull up. Doing 1 set every day will not hamper your muscle growth.
After this I could do 20 more pull ups! I would've never known that this would work so well. My dad is so happy with me and proud and I think he might actually pay child support to my mother. My libido has never been better. I can now masturbate 12 times a day (previously 3 times - breakfast, lunch, dinner). This new pull up techniques has inspired me to donate money to WaterAid and give up sex!
I'm definitely weak in those points. Need to do this for a while. I really like that you explain the science and principles and such behind this stuff in easy ways.
Jeff I came across this video almost 2 years ago and it has worked for me. Excellent way to warm up before I go into full pull up mode. I believe I was able to do 33-36 pull at one time. My work out with warm up would be 1 hour long 2 times a week. With plenty of recover time thru out the week. Much thanks.
It works. I did 2 warm up sets of this(pull up assisted machine at 50lb 20 reps so i don't get tired), before i went for regular pull ups. Old record was 7 with an ugly 8. Just did 9.5. Not only that but my second set would usually be 5-6 reps. Second set today was 8 with only about 45 sec rest, followed by a set of 7. Left the gym happy. Thank you.
I actually figured out the first exercise by accident a while before watching this video. I was doing pull ups and got to the point where I couldn't do anymore in the set. So I finished off my set of 10 or so a little differently than normal. Instead of jumping up and finishing the 10 with some negatives, I still tried to do the pull ups but without the arms. I found myself doing a very comfortable and rewarding exercise. I'm glad I stumbled on this and learned that it is indeed something that is beneficial.
It is hard for me to believe someone on youtube giving advice who is out of shape and wearing a t-shirt. There isn't anything "sexual" because he has his shirt off. He is showing how the muscles are working and flexing. I can see a fat guy in a baggy shirt hiding his beer belly trying to give ab advice.... More credible?

I could barely do 3 to 4 close grip pullups, hands just outside the shoulder. Using your scapula warmup, just cranked out 3 sets of 5 each. In doing so, I could feel the evidence afterwards of having done much more work on the upper back. Usually when someone says, do more reps instantly, it never works but I want to thank you, Jeff, for the instant gains. Just in time too, turning 60 in a few days.

thanks for letting me know. i really didnt know the difference. i usually go all the way down with under grip pull ups, but not with wide grip

Lewis Yaworski I'd recommend pull-ups are your main back/bicep compound either way honestly. It's such an amazing exercise.

THANK YOU, JEFF! I've been stuck doing weighted pull ups with a 35 pound x 8 for a long time. Today I tried this and was able to do a 45 x 10 weighted pull ups!
Like the speech in the first minute. I don't know why people think it's "cheating" to engage other muscles beyond your target isolation. The reason why some prefer sitting exercises and standing ones as a waste of energy because you're wasting energy. Love understanding and feeling how my muscles work as a unit.

thats not a bad thing. That means they are getting a workout. Assuming you let the muscles replenish you will be able to do more pullups from the start the next time you try
I was j/k....I couldn't tell much difference in the number I can do afterwards but this could work for other people. This guy's advice is actually quite good!

hey Jeff, I'm16, it totally helped me out . B4 trying the scapula shrugs I could only do 6 and 8 at max. But after trying the scapula shrugs I was surprised as I could now do a max of 13 pull ups in 30secs. 30 secs is my school's fitness test standard. So thanks a lot Jeff I really appreciate it.

What else would you kip???? I crossfit and normally do stict weighted pullups. Time and place for everything my friend. Do more research on good crossfitters. The good ones would crush you on any workout you throw at them. Strict or kipping. Lol so go kip up your reply on how terrible crossfit is and they all suck and without a kip they couldnt do anything. Because all we do is kipping pullups.

"Do more research on good Crossfitters." That's what everyone who would be interested in CrossFit should do, I agree. I'm not, because I'd rather train for something than just exercise doing a bunch of movements thrown together with no thought attached. Besides, the top Crossfitters don't even do CrossFit for their training. They occasionally do a CrossFit WOD to check on their progress. I'm not saying all Crossfitters suck in my original comment or in this one either. I checked out this video to get tips on how to increase my pullups, and this guy didn't talk about cheating using momentum and adding the kipping movement like a lot of so-called CrossFit (or should it be CrossKip?) 'trainers' do, so I thanked him.

i usually do 25 pull ups ..after this i did 21 great job
its because now your are using the right muscles. doing a number of pull ups without forcing the right way can bring you to a higher number. Focusing on wich muscles should work make you doing less rep but more efficient ones.

Just done this yesterday, was able to do 3 x 1 for BodyWeight, never done that ever.
People who claim they can do 20 lol i beat you can't do 20 proper pull ups. Most of you probably go down halfway. I train upper body a lot and fresh i could probably do about 10-12 proper pull ups.

MaskedArtist80 how long have you been in the gym for. I've been in about a year I'm a skinny fuck but very strong like. I've gone 40 kg on the shoulders on a full routine like so not when I'm fresh. When I first came in I couldn't even do one pull up proper I was swinging on the bar and everything couldn't even do one dip either I have no triceps. Now I do dips easy that I just attach like 20 kg plates to me to make it harder and pull ups I do back straight wide grip no swinging which is kind of cheating. I'm not very good at bench press though cus my arms are very long. Max I ever done was 100 for 3 reps.

Jeff, I need you or someone's help!!! I can't even do one pull up with or without a chair. I activate the muscle every time and I just can't do any pull ups after. What can I do to do a pull up?

Use bands gradually reducing resistance as you get better
Do reverse pullups. What I did was, get on a chair, grab the pull up bar and walk off the chair and hang there, put my feet back on the chair and do it all over again.
Now I can do 15 pushups. Went from 0 to 15 in a couple of months. Slow progression, didn't want to hurt myself.

Isometric. If you can reach the bar with your feet on the floor, help yourself with your legs to get on top position, then hold it like 5 seconds and slowly come down. Do 5 reps and then rest like a minute... then do it again. Soon you'll do regular pull-ups or chin-ups. "Simonthecat88"

Gaddamn I love your videos. Working out for the time I have been (About a year and a half) 7 months more intense than the previous 11 months. I have never felt such an engaged muscle routine than I have before watching your videos . Bonus is now having people come up to you in the gym and say why are you doing this and why that? And how are you looking so much better so quickly .

Buy a Perfect Multi-Gym pull up bar from Walmart. It's cheap, the set up is easy, and it fits over the door so you can do these at home. I'm now up to 20 reps a set.

I must say. Thank you very much Jeff. This helped me a lot. My problem is this one. I have the necessary strength, but I don't have a pole to hold onto. Instead I have a slippery tile surface to hold onto, and which doesn't allow me to move my arms that much. It's mostly my biceps doing the lifting, and my fingers trying to not let me slip away. Now I've moved on to the balcony, where the surface is made out of concrete, and where the base isn't that thick, so I can move my arms around. The finger problem still exists, but It's a massive improvement. That combined with your advice has really helped me out a lot. I can still only do 10 pull-ups at the concrete balcony, and around 5 at the slippery tile surface, but right now I am training my base. Your advice has helped me out a lot, to which I thank you.
Now after years n years of trying n lots of failed motivation now I can perform 4 to 5 pull up. I felt great n motivated dt I can now have got my first 4 pull up right..
Now I ll try to follow ur instructions n ll check how can I improve my 4 pull up to 10. Wish me luck n I come back once again with my 10 th pull up..

Watch his "Pullpus vs Chinups: The BIG Differences!!" video if you haven't already, there he explains what to do if you can't even do one pullup.
You have to try doing pull up, best way is to take some assistance from some body who will push you at the time of pull up. To gain strength of increasing pull up reps, you have to do it everyday.
+Rajdip Khan what if you're doing a 4 day upper/lower body split? still recommend doing them everyday? wouldn't it hinder recovery for the next upper body day especially if you're doing rows as well?
long live MAG If you are trying to develop any weak body part, you need to workout it more often than other body parts. When you are not able to do proper pull ups, that means your lat muscle are very weak. It will not be strong unless u hit it more often. For an example you are able to do 3-4 proper pull up in 1st set. after 3-4 you can add another 3-4 with assistance. Continue only 1 set for every day and after 2 week you will be able to do 6-7 pull up. Doing 1 set every day will not hamper your muscle growth.
Step 1: Do a pull up.
After this I could do 20 more pull ups! I would've never known that this would work so well. My dad is so happy with me and proud and I think he might actually pay child support to my mother. My libido has never been better. I can now masturbate 12 times a day (previously 3 times - breakfast, lunch, dinner). This new pull up techniques has inspired me to donate money to WaterAid and give up sex!

Jeff I came across this video almost 2 years ago and it has worked for me. Excellent way to warm up before I go into full pull up mode. I believe I was able to do 33-36 pull at one time. My work out with warm up would be 1 hour long 2 times a week. With plenty of recover time thru out the week.

Right ? That chest already had my attention.
It works. I did 2 warm up sets of this(pull up assisted machine at 50lb 20 reps so i don't get tired), before i went for regular pull ups. Old record was 7 with an ugly 8. Just did 9.5. Not only that but my second set would usually be 5-6 reps. Second set today was 8 with only about 45 sec rest, followed by a set of 7. Left the gym happy. Thank you.
I actually figured out the first exercise by accident a while before watching this video. I was doing pull ups and got to the point where I couldn't do anymore in the set. So I finished off my set of 10 or so a little differently than normal. Instead of jumping up and finishing the 10 with some negatives, I still tried to do the pull ups but without the arms. I found myself doing a very comfortable and rewarding exercise. I'm glad I stumbled on this and learned that it is indeed something that is beneficial.

I could barely do 3 to 4 close grip pullups, hands just outside the shoulder. Using your scapula warmup, just cranked out 3 sets of 5 each. In doing so, I could feel the evidence afterwards of having done much more work on the upper back. Usually when someone says, do more reps instantly, it never works but I want to thank you, Jeff, for the instant gains. Just in time too, turning 60 in a few days.
