Thanks so much. We love sharing more of the Dutch traditions and habits. This is the history. Next week we share more on how we celebrate it nowadays 🤩🤩
Yeah we made the sweaters ourselves. We love them! Next week we dive into how we celebrate Saint Nicolas nowadays 🤩🤩. It’s my favorite Dutch tradition 😎
Hey Dennis and Tim 👋☺ First: I like your Partner-Sweaters 👍 And I like this video very much. Before, I knew only some differences between Sankt Nikolaus in Germany and Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, but now I'm really well informed. Thanks! 🤗
Thanks so much. We made the sweaters ourselves, just for Saint Nicholas 🤩🤩. Next week we will share how we celebrate Sinterklaas nowadays! Which is my favorite Dutch traditions ever 😉☺️😎
Great video and I learned so much and love the sweatshirts. I think it’s so interesting and in my lifetime I’d love to come to a Sinterklaus because it sounds so special.
Another comment: The Sinterklaas in this photo has a truly amazing white beard! And his white horse is also fabulous! !!!!!!! You were discussing Saint Nicholas living in Spain as opposed to the North Pole. Here, I see he has a horse, and I know he travels by boat (very sensible). In our stories, he is riding a sleigh with reindeer. The reindeer would be quite uncomfortable in sunny Spain. So at least for the comfort of the reindeer, I guess it's good that Santa Claus reportedly stays at the North Pole, where it is cooler! ;-)
Haha very true 😂😂😂. This year Sinterklaas actually came by steamtrain because his new horse was afraid of water. But next year he will come by boat again 😂😉
@STUFR - Travel & Food videos Oh yes, some horses can really be afraid of water. They have to be trained to it, and some cannot get over their fear. I'm glad Sinterklaas got there by train, and everything was okay in the end! :-)
It’s really nice time of year. These three weeks they have extra news broadcasts for kids following everything Sinterklaas does and it is always a fun and creative story they come up with 🤩
Dankje!! Yay for more Dutch culture videos. Hope to see more videos of Dutch holiday traditions videos. I enjoy the Dutch Birthday parties and even had the pleasure of being part of a Dutch wedding. I’m an fan from Washington D.C.
Thanks so much Mary 😍. We have more on Saint Nicholas coming up soon and we are preparing many more videos on Dutch culture, Dutch Food and traditions for 2020. So stay tuned. We have exciting plans 😎🤩
You have a far more richly interesting Saint Nick than we do, in the States. I like this tradition very much! Brilliant to know the whole story, as I'd only understood a tiny bit about the tradition. And the sweater design is brilliant!
Thanks! Yeah it is my favorite Dutch tradition! It is so much fun. In next week’s video we go in detail on how we celebrate it nowadays. Which will get you even more excited. I think 😂😜😉
Hello Tim and Dennis! First of all, I love your sweaters! I would even buy one if you were selling them! They are marvelous. This is a great video. I've been looking forward to your series on Sinterklaas. There must be so much excitement in the Netherlands, now that Sinterklaas has arrived! I think it makes much better sense to exchange gifts on St. Nicholas' Day (December 6th). I don't think it will ever change here in the United States, as our own traditions have gone on for so long. But I think your traditions are wonderful. And those cookies are super-delicious. :-) :-) Hugs! PS Is Tim growing a beard? If so, he is looking great!
Thanks so much❤️. Tim is not growing a beard haha. He just didn’t shave for a few days 😂😂😂. We love these traditions a lot. This was the origin story. Next week we dive into how we celebrate Sinterklaas nowadays. I think you will love that video as well! 🤩😍😉. Maybe one day we will sell these sweaters. They are super fun and comfy as well☺️😎
@STUFR - Travel & Food videos I think selling the sweaters would be fun! I am really looking forward to the next video. This may be stirring up controversy, so please forgive me. I love the pepernoten. In Germany, there is a cookie I also love - Pfeffernüsse. The flavor of the two cookies is a little similar, even thought the traditions around them are different. They are both holiday cookies, I think. Do you know if there is any connection between the two cookies? If this is impolite to ask, please forgive me. Here also, using these warm spices for baking at this year is very popular, so these two types of cookies with warm winter spices maybe just happened to develop in Germany and the Netherlands for the winter holidays.
It is never impolite to ask. So no worries on that part 😘. Tim knows the German version, but they are not as hugely popular as the Pepernoten in the Netherlands. They do have the same origin but in Germany more connected to Christmas. The flavours are kind of similar. I just think the Pepernoten took on a life of their own when they got to be the signature snack for the Petes to hand out to the kids in the three weeks Sinterklaas is in the country. The german version is a bit more soft like gingerbread and has a white skin. The Dutch ones are hard and crunchy and even a bit smaller than the German ones. 🤩😉☺️
@STUFR - Travel & Food videos I've eaten both of them, and I have to say that they are both delicious! i think the flavors in the cookies - either one - is addictive. We can get Pfeffernüsse here around Christmas time, but sadly not Pepernoten. I wonder how hard it would be to bake them yourself? Hmmm. :-) :-) I used to make Shoo-fly pie every year at the holidays. It is not a traditional holiday food, but it also has flavors like gingerbread. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe. If you like those flavors, it is very good. We had relatives from Pennsylvania, so our family liked to have it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of the nice things about baking it every year was it made the house smell so good with all of the spices. I hope your weekend is going well!
We are having a nice weekend. Hope you will have a great Sunday as well! Baking the Pepernoten is easy. We do it here all the time. But you can get those prepacked bundles of herbs. So that makes it easier I guess ☺️🤩
When my kids were little we always used to watch Het Sinterklaas journaal with Dewertje Blok on Dutch tv. It goes on for aaaaggges as Tim pointed out. Sinterklaas, Christmas, Nieuwjaar and Pasen. How to drain your bank account in 5 months (if you have kids😂). Did you do any investigative journalism and interview Sinterklaas and any Pieten and kids for the videos?😁
We did actually!! We have an interview with the one and only Sinterklaas himself coming up as the fourth and last video in this series. It will be out December 4th 🤩😎
Wat leuke sweaters, ze zien erg gezellig uit. 😍 Het verhaal was tamelijk interessant, bedankt voor de nieuwe video. Hebben jullie al de cadeaus voor elkaar? 😁
Very interesting video, thank you 👍 And fun to watch 😃 It's always so interesting to hear the different aspects of an otherwise "well known" celebration ... 😀
@@stufr.travel I thought that I've seen you already talking about it some time ago 🤔 (but not in that detail). It's always nice to research traditions, especially ones of which one is so fond of, isn't it 😄
Yeah very true. I already did a shorter video on it early on. And a livestream last year. But this time it has more detail, like you said. This is the proper story haha
What an interesting video! 😊 I didn't know there was such a big celebration of Saint Nicholas in the Netherlands! I'm from Poland and we celebrate his day on the 6th of december, but it's not that grand and more of a prequel to Christmas, because in our language it's actually Saint Nicholas who brings the Christmas presents, but on Christmas Eve and not Christmas Day. It's interesing how all of these traditions differ between the countries but always have some parts in common. I sometimes think the traditions in my country must have gotten mixed up sometime over the centuries because when I compare them to other countries they really don't make much sense. 🙈😛
Haha no these ones were the good ones 😂😂. I love them, but that one bag we made you try was really really afwul. So sorry you had to go through that 😂😂😂😂
Dressing up in blackface is racist. Full stop. Not all traditions are worth preserving. There are black Dutch people too. Black is not a costume, and treating it like it's fancy dress for a holiday is one of a thousand slights people of color have to endure. It has historically been used to dehumanize black people and has an incredibly painful history. Everywhere. You have to know this in 2019. And if you don't, then you don't care. Just say that. I mean, we also have to deal with white people calling us the n-word in the street. So, I guess I'm not surprised that we STILL have to tell white people to stop doing this. Just because it makes you feel warm and fuzzy doesn't mean it's harmless. In America, during my grandmother's childhood, white people took picnics to lynchings and cheerfully took photos next to swinging bodies. It was a great Sunday out with the kids. You can still find these images readily available online. The Netherlands will become more diverse, and you will have to reckon with this. It always shocks me how someone from a historically disenfranchised group can't see when they're participating in the same toward another minority group. Your "research" is shoddy. This is a dark, made up story with real ramifications for people in your community. Blackface is that important to you? That's incredibly telling.
I totally agree with you on that. That is also what we say in this video. The story of Pete coming through the chimney and therefor having some black spots on his face is the best way to tell the story. In that case he is not black but just has some dirt on his face from the chimney. I work in a school and this is how we have been teaching the story for quite some years now. Things have been changing the last years. On TV the Petes are also like this. There are some groups that want to hold on to the previous version of Pete. I get where they come from. They just need a bit more time to adapt. The discussion on this topic has not been done in a correct way. People are way to black and white on the topic, pun not even intended. In times where there is a lot of negativity in the world, people want to hang on to their culture and traditions. It is a logical thing if you look at culture and how culture changes. Any abrupt changes will result in a period of “chaos” and then it will even out and change has been effected. Normally it changes more subtly even in the case of Saint Nicholas. The story about having to go in Pete’s bag to Spain if you had been naughty has not been used for over decades. But nobody noticed that because it was a subtle change. The way the discussion is at the moment forces people to take harder stands and than disables subtle change. That is a shame. But please know that the change has very much been going on for quite some years. On December 4th we will air an interview with Saint Nicholas himself and he will also talk about this a bit in that video. Hopefully you will watch that and see the positive change that is already happening 😊

Amazing story and reminds me a little of Santa Claus as we are getting closer to xmas, candy , gifts and helpers . Great job Guys
The origin of Santa Claus comes from Saint Nicholas 😉☺️. They just changed the storylines and gave it their own twist. 🤩🤩

Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Santa Claus, Kris Kringle and also known as Santa all the same person, lol🤣
