For my money, Peter Cullen as Optimus in Transformers and Kevin Conroy as Batman in Batman: The Animated Series are the pinnacle of animated hero voices.
No animated film should have a soundtrack that rocks THIS hard! It's honestly worth downloading the soundtrack to listen to while you're just doing your daily stuff- chores, fighting robots, digging graves, etc.
try looking up Cybertronic Spree, those Transformers cosplayers are an awesome band that really rock especially when they're doing songs from TF the movie - can't watch their videos without getting a smile on my face!
Right there with you. I saw it and received my emotional scarring in theater as well! I admit to hating it the first time because...well..you know. It grew on me though and has become one of my favorite movies. My kids loved it too when I shared it with them. We've all watched it together many times.
A lot of my friends saw it kn theater. I had to wait until it was on video. My Aunt rented it for my cousin's birthday party. One of the best parties ever. Tied with 8th grade when one of my friends played us the Holy Grail at his birthday party. My sense of humor has never been the same.
This movie single handedly cemented the field of child therapy in the 80s. Not even Robotech, with the death of Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon (in back to back episodes, no less), could do that.
Many children were actually traumatized by Optimus Prime's death. Hasbro received a tremendous amount of complaints from parents. The whole thing was urgent enough to call an emergency meeting and work towards Prime's revival in the following season of the cartoon.
Not only that but the ending of GI Joe was changed at the last minute. Duke was supposed to die as his toy line was discontinued. There’s a brief scene of Scarlett popping her head in to say something like, “Duke’s gonna make it”. As the purpose of the shows was simply to sell the figures, after a line ended they just killed the character off. Hasbro certainly traumatized a lot of kids in 86, and angered their parents as well.
Very true. Even Peter Cullen who voiced the character said he hated it too. He didn't know the character was popular and how much Optimus Prime meant to everyone until he heard of what happened.
yes, and all this during the 80's long before the internet... really had to put some effort into it to connect with other people and get movements like that going. Couldn't just instant message, email, or post any comment - it was snail mail and maybe telephones with long-distance charges... SO much different from today's conveniences.
The script writers warned hasbro execs that killing off prime was a mistake but the execs insisted they knew better. Another case of stupid execs ruining a good thing
@@eviljack One of them happened to warn the execs not to kill Optimus Prime because of how much Optimus means to children. He is more than just a fictional character. He's a father figure to them and yes, killing off Prime is a mistake. I agree with you. It's another case of studio stupidity and execs not knowing better.
The invasion of the Autobot shuttle hits so differently if you watched it as a kid vs if you never grew up with it and are watching it for the first time now. For us it was about the brutally violent deaths of four major characters from the first two seasons. (I personally found Prowl’s death rather creepy, with the glowing eyes and smoke from the mouth) In fact the body count was really rather shocking given that no one ever died in the original series. For reactors today, it’s “what? Megatron turned into a gun?”
They battled for millions of years and shrugged off powerful blasts like they were nothing, but it seems like more deaths happened in one half hour than the entirety of the war!
from what I heard, Hasbro wanted to kill off characters in order to sell toys of new characters that they wanted to push on us kids at the time... "no one's going to miss Optimus, surely Rodimus will work as a substitute, right?" - they didn't know the trauma they would cause by doing that and the backlash that followed. - It was a marketing ploy... no such thing as reissues and homages and masterpieces at the time. No live-action Michael Bay version, no Cyberverse version, etc. all they had was Gen1 cartoon, and they wanted to sell more toys - and even to this day, if there's nothing selling, then we don't continue to get awesome collectibles... it's a cycle and the reality of business, so I personally can't blame Hasbro too much for wanting to stay in business. Just hate that it took traumatizing us as kids to do it.
I saw this in the theaters when it came out. It was fairly shocking. It was the first time a kids cartoon movie had a hard-rock soundtrack. It also had the main beloved characters die. Yes, this movie's SOLE premise was to kill off the old characters to make way for new characters. However, they hadn't considered the attachment that kids had to those old characters. So much hate mail filled the offices that they were forced to alter the production of G.I.Joe the Animated Movie, because they were going to kill off Duke and others for the same reason. That's why, in that movie, Duke miraculously comes out of his coma at the end, despite never showing him alive. Transformers the movie is also the very LAST movie that Orson Wells did. He died shortly there after and Leonard Nimoy was brought in to loop a few of his lines post production.
I don't think it's ever been stated that Nimoy recorded any of the Unicron lines. Most official sources say Wells did them all, and that rumors spread that Nimoy did the last few lines of Unicron. Edit: Yeah, the voice director, Wally Burr, has stated that Nimoy didn't record any lines for Unicron and that Wells had finished all of his lines before he died.
This was traumatic as a kid in the 80s watching this at 5am in the morning back in 1987 seeing the autobots getting wiped out, ironhide killed with megatrons cannon to the face and then the hardest death scene too watch, the death of optimus prime. im not ashamed to say that i cried hard as a little kid. you have to understand back then optimus prime was a role model an icon to us kids and when his death hit it was like losing a member of your family. some kids even locked themselves in their room it was that powerful. Hasbro had no idea what they were doing. they thought they were just getting rid of the old toyline and bringing in the new one. they had no idea they were about to piss off and make so many boys cry back then. Which is why they bring him back in later seasons and they changed the script in GI JOE THE MOVIE (which came out at the same time as TF:TM) with the killing off of another main character DUKE. but regardless of mine and countless others childhood trauma, this continues to be my favourite movie to this day. awesome animation, excellent story, filled with 80s rock and nostalgia. Even the live action transformers movies dont come close to this. TILL ALL ARE ONE!!
Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime's vehicles are actual concept vehicles shown at the Detroit Auto Show. Rodimus isn't an RV, he's a concept trailer truck. GI Joe was not released in theaters. After the financial failures of My Little Pony and Transformers, the studio pulled GI Joe from the release schedule and went straight to VHS.
The funniest thing is they put the "Shit" and "Damn it" in for the PG rating so that parents would have to accompany their kids to the movie, allowing the kids to tell their parents exactly which characters/toys they wanted them to get.
Transformers and G.I. Joe were my two favorite cartoons growing up as a kid. This movie was one of my all time favorites that my family and I would rent at the local video store. The soundtrack is absolute gold and 100 percent defined the entire 80s decade right there. This entire movie and experience is a total banger.
I'm about to date myself but, I saw this movie in the theater. I was 16 at the time. This was Orson Welles last role before his death. The bird was Laser Beak, one of Soundwave's spies
The movie was made to usher out the old toy line and introduce the new line. Killing off Optimus, kids, myself included, lost our minds, parents complained to Hasbro saying WTF! My kid has locked themselves in the bathroom bawling! Prime returns in the cartoon. Starscream exists as a ghost and teams up with Unicron and makes an appearance in Beast Wars. Daniel becomes Arcee's head in the headmasters series. Galvatron is actually a triple changer, cannon, gun, robot.
I remember Christmas time that year. My uncle bought me Galvatron the biggest one they had forget what class it was ,,it was huge. Made noises and everything... after a year or so I gave it to my neighbor with all my transformer toys I had all the jets and everything devastator you name it I had it.. maybe one day I'll buy it again all the ones I had, probably not though I'm downsizing all my toys.. I have just about every toy from 2000 on when it comes to dc and marvel.. I have all the transformer movie figures from every movie
Starscream is Chris Latta. Yes, he was also Cobra Commander. As well as the original Mr. Burns on the Simpsons. I love the juxtaposition of watching the Autobots morn Prime and Magnus reluctantly accept leadership, then cut to the Decepticons just tossing out Megatron and fighting over who replaces him.
Yes. The purpose of the movie was to kill off the characters who’s toys were being discontinued and introduce the new toys. However the producers didn’t realize how beloved Optimus Prime was (this film began production around the 1st season of the show in 1984 before the could know) they quickly realized and brought Optimus back in the series a year later with a new toy replacing Rodimus Prime. He’s been the leader ever since. They also brought back Starscream as he had also become too popular to throw away.
optimus dying in this made the makers of the gi joe movie change the end and forced the to keep duke alive. duke was supposed to really die at the end of the gi joe movie, but there was such a huge backlash against prime dying that they had to add in an adr line about duke surviving to try and salvage the movie.
Saw this in the theater opening day. My mind was blown to another level afterwards. This was a non stop assault of awesomeness on your neurological senses. the music, the animation, the colors, shading, cuss words, the future, (2005) autobots getting murked, this was the most adult and badass movie I ever saw as a kid.
In the 1986 Transformers movie, a notable event occurred which led to the death of the Autobot named Huffer. Huffer, a courageous and dedicated member of the Autobot team, met his demise due to a fatal shot delivered by Megatron. The attack was delivered from behind, catching Huffer off guard and leaving him vulnerable to the ruthless Decepticon leader's assault. This tragic incident highlighted the ongoing conflict between the Autobots City and the Decepticons, showcasing the danger and high stakes associated with their war. Huffer's death served as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices involved in the battle for control of the Transformers' home planet, Cybertron Despite the loss of Huffer, his sacrifice only fueled the determination of his Autobot comrades to continue their fight against the Decepticons. His memory and unwavering spirit live on, inspiring others to fight for justice and peace amidst the ongoing conflict
This is the sort of film diet the young snowflake generation needed to be brought up on to not end up like the pussies they are today! Teaches life lessons like how to deal with death!
If you've watched the first 2 seasons of Transformers the invasion of the Autobot shuttle at the beginning will hit different. For me seeing Brawn (he was my favourite) and the rest get killed was a HUGE shock, no Autobot died like this during the animated show. But for those who haven't watched the animated show, that scene only gets a aww and seeing Megatron turn into a gun is the surprise.
Frank Welker was the MVP of the cast, given how many characters he voiced. Megatron, Soundwave, Soundwave's cassette minions, Sludge, and Wheelie. Also the voices of Fred and Scooby Doo.
Frank had too many popular characters to count. Don’t forget Rat and Sooner from Ghostbusters, Darkseid from Superfriends, Doctor Claw from Inspector Gadget (basically Soundwave’s voice without the modulation effects), etc. Cullen had an impressive voice list as well. True legends.
@@scottamann2445 Couldn't believe he did Claw until you see him perform the voice. He's the go to voice if you want animal sfx - aside from Dee Bradley Baker.
During the casting call there was a table with drawings of all the characters in the pilot and a sign that said, "Choose 3." Frank Welker grabbed a handful and figured they would just hire him for his best three. They instead hired him for all of them.
@@scottamann2445 What kills me about Cullen's filmography is that he's the one who did all the sounds and roars for the Predator. You'd think that would be more of a Welker gig, but nah, that's Cullen.
I watched this for the first time in October 1986. One of the few times I've cried during a movie. Watching Prime's glowing eyes go out and the color leave his body was one of the most traumatizing moments in cinematography even though it was an animated one. Hasbro got ALOT of angry fan letters in response to them killing off Optimus, so much in fact that at the end of season 3 they released a 2 part season finale dubbed "The Return of Optimus Prime".
"Can I say anus during the kids show?" ... a few minute later....."Oh Shit! What are we gunna do now?" Keep in mind, this movie was intended for 6-10 year old kids, many of whom regarded Optimus Prime as a father figure. The deaths in the film are characters those kids grew with for 2 years of episodes. This is one of the most violent film for children ever. This movie was formative for me. I love this movie so much.
I remember seeing this at the cinema for my friends 9th birthday party, followed by a McDonald's. Back in those days, we only ever went to a fast food place for birthday parties, not weekly like some kids today lol
The one thing I always notice in this film is that Unicrons eyes are literally just windows. There is no mechanism connecting them to his brain at all.
You have no idea what this did to little kids. In the animated series no one got hurt let alone killed.& They kill off half a dozen autobots in the 1st 10 minutes. I was 15 and i was shocked. My little cousins and the other kids were sobbing.
A sweet story about this movie. When I was in first grade, a girl in my class was crushing on me hard and I gave her the comic adaptation of this movie as a gift. I never saw her again, but she found me on Facebook a few years ago and told me she still had that comic book.
prime's death was so traumatizing and the backlash so great, they actually had to change the ending of the GI joe movie, where another popular character was suppose to die. hasbro thought that these characters were just toys but to guys like me, they were more than that.
The thing with Bumbelbee is that he didn't have that influence back then. Bumbelbee was only made into this great warrior in the films. In the series he became Goldbug and from then on he resorted to weapons more. But I see Goldbug more as a rebirth than as a repair.
If you were a kid in the 80s this movie was hearbreaking. Kids in the theatre were freaking out. People stopped taking there kids to see it and that's why it flopped.
As a kid it always bothered me that so many Autobots straight-up died while, with the exception of Starscream, the Decepticons just get upgraded into powerful, new bodies. Even then, Starscream gets to come back as a ghost.
@@LooneyTuneLegendYT I’m the one who requested it for Mr & Mrs Movies. Was so nervous that Mrs Movies might be hit hard by the death of Optimus but relieved she took it better than I thought and that it brought back nice toy memories for her and the Mr. But yea your reactions were funny and spot on too.
You may not know it but when Megatron was floating towards Unicron , he was the only one alive . All the other decepticons died from their wounds in space. This movie was a massacre to the G1 line . Pretty much all the original characters good or bad were killed for new characters ( Toys ) .
Starscream was always trying to betray Megatron and replace him. Starscream was voiced by Christopher Charles Collins (who was actually a comedian) he did the voice of Cobra Commander for GI Joe and once in the 3rd season of Transfotmers episode Only Human.
41:00 - The original Galvatron toy was described as a 'city commander' and was intended to be a different character. The movie producers decided to make him a reincarnation of Megatron, which has since been accepted by many fans as cannon.
Have to give one last huge thank you to @You, Me, & The Movies Mr & Mrs Movies for this one time opportunity to request this underrated classic. So glad you both enjoyed it and thank you especially for the bday wishes 😊!!! Also am very happy to see a large majority of their fans not only enjoyed the film reaction but are also oldschool TF fans like myself. Was so happy to bring back some energetic nostalgia for all of ya with the film, the toys, and that hair rising soundtrack that never gets old. Though i did want to give some suggestions on episodes for kind of an abridged key episode binge if the Mr/Mrs or anyone else here want to watch the G1 series: [Season 1] -More Than Meets the Eye (pilot episodes 1, 2, and 3) -Fire in the Sky (great episode with the Robotech toy that became a Transformer, SkyFire (aka Jetfire) -SOS DinoBots (debut of the DinoBots and yes they were created by Wheeljack/Ratchet with Spikes knowledge of Dinos like everyone’s saying here) -The Ultimate Doom (parts 1, 2, and 3) (partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on) -War of the Dinobots (debut of Swoop & Snarl) -A Plague of Insecticons (debut of the Insecticons) -Heavy Metal War (debut of Devastator) [Season 2] -Megatron's Master Plan (parts 1 & 2) (also partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on) -The Key to Vector Sigma (parts 1 & 2) -StarScream's Brigade (great episode for Starscream) [Season 3 (after the events of the Movie)] -The Five Faces of Darkness 5 parter story (gives background on the Quintessons from the film) -Ghost in the Machine (if you want to see what happens to StarScream and Unicron’s Head) -Call of the Primatives (great episode for Grimlock) -Dark Awakening (pre-story to the last 2 episodes) -The Return of Optimus Prime (parts 1 & 2. Redeems the sad part of the movie.) Don’t bother with the Japanese Headmasters series as it’s its own continuity after season 3 and quite depressing/nonsensical (imo). All are available to watch for free on UA-cam.
I saw this in the theater as a 6 year old and was totally traumatized by it! It's one of my favorite movies now, I watch it at least a dozen times a year
As a kid I recorded every episode on vid tape for myself and for the future to show my kids if I had any. I did show them to my daughter and she loved it. It was a very proud moment for me when I took her to see the Bay movie and she pointed out all that was wrong with it and I didn't even have to tell her.
18:45 That line of profanity caused an outrage from parents when their children were watching this in the theater, which was a huge controversy at the time.
The DINOBOTS in the Comic Books were actually ancient. Reading that as a kid was very surreal…. Ratchet woke up in the Jurassic period and walks around being spied on by Shock-Wave.. it’s CRAZY
Saw this in the theater at 5 years old. When Optimus Prime turned grey, it traumatized every kid in that theater. Cult classic though, we all love it as adults now.
5:31 - Peter Cullen talked about how he figured Optimus Prime's voice. He was talking to his brother and asked for vocal advice. His brother told Peter to not be a Hollywood hero with yelling, but instead "be strong enough to be gentle".
3:28 Marvel was the publisher for the initial Transformers and G.I. Joe comic books. They were part of the Hasbro trifecta to get around FCC regulations regarding children's programming, advertising, and marketing to young children. Marvel generally had their writers come up with the identities for the characters through the comic book storylines. Then Sunbow interpreted them to the small screen TV series. The comic books came in because advertising for a new issue of a comic book was less stringently regulated than for advertising children's toys at the time. But have all three lines, a TV show, a comic book, and a toy line made for a shotgun blast of product placement for young 80s kids.
My childhood! I actually ran away from my babysitter and hid in the tree-line. I was 10 years old. Her game was over 9,000 because she left, rented this movie and bought a pizza....and used both to lure me out of my 'hidey-hole'.
I remember this movie from when I was a kid. Back then, there was talk about kids shows/movies getting too violent or being too commercialized for selling toys. Us kids didn't care about any of that, we just wanted to watch and play with the toys, but looking back, I think the shock of Optimus's death was the turning point against the industry at the time. That was when they had finally gone too far given what it did to so many kids. The animated G.I. Joe movie's change was the first notable one. Since then, they've progressively dialed it back bit by bit to get the lame shows we have now. The 90s animated shows like X-Men, Batman, Gargoyles, etc., were as close to a balance as the industry was ever going to get. Since then, if you want something animated that's not lame but not something like South Park/Family Guy/Sponge Bob/etc., you have to go to anime now...
If you can't see the Faction Face (symbol) look at the eyes. When they're not using robo-binoculars, Autobot eyes are blue and Decepticon eyes are red (with some exceptions here and there).
It was very hard for 8 year old me to see some of my favorite Autobots get killed, especially in the first few minutes of the movie. Prowl, the Porsche 911 cop car was awesome. i can't believe he got wasted along with Ironhide, Ratchet and Wheeljack. But the totally AWESOME soundtrack makes up for it. Stan Bush, NGR and Weird Al had some great songs. "The Touch" is still an awesome jam. We grew up with these inspirational songs, not just from this movie but others- Karate Kid, Flash Dance, Blood Sport. That why Gen X rules.
one of my favorite moments in gaming history is the final mission in Saints Row 4: "Punch the Shark" skydiving through Zinyak's spaceship in power armor, dodging death lasers and killing Zin foot soldiers like piñata's with your hentai bat, all set to Stan Bush "The Touch". epic
Funny thing, even before the infamous Optimus Prime death scene, some parents took their kids out following the shuttle attack scene, and even right after the opening scene with Unicron.
The insane five faced Quintesson judges were the creators of the Transformers, millions of years before the movie. They've mostly gone insane over the millennium and their empire collapsed. The Quintessons made robots for the neighboring organic species to use as slaves- military models for fighting wars and domestic models for construction, transportation, etc. The robots eventually overthrew their creators and eventually their distinct nature's brought them into conflict- the former military models became Decepticons and the domestic units were the ancestors of the Autobots. And they've been fighting mostly non-stop ever since. The Autobot Matrix Of Leadership is a repository of the knowledge of all their past leaders- and a means to upgrade whatever leader it seems worthy. It imparts wisdom but can also be used to commune with the "souls" of past leaders. (Like the Black Panther herb does in Marvel, kinda).
I *adore* this movie - no joke, i think i've watched this more than any other animated film, ever. Pretty sure i can quote it almost word for word the entire way through, not just the dialogue, but the lyrics for the sound track too lol.
I was 14 when I saw this in the cinema. Because I watched the TV series I thought nothing much would change. Didn't expected to see iron hide, ratchet and braun murdered in such a violent way. I cried
I was the prime age (Ha, see what I did there?) to be an original Generation 1 Transformers fan. I still have all my toys in a big bin. No collector’s value though. They are all beat up from hours of play. I loved this movie, but this was traumatizing as a kid. No one really died in American 80s cartoons. They basically slaughtered the original toylike in the first half hour to make room for new characters. Prime dying was devastating. He really was a hero/father figure to many 80s kids. The outcry was so bad they eventually brought him back. This cartoon will still always be Transformers for me. The new movies have their moments, but it will never be the same for my generation.
Transformers was my favorite cartoon growing up, because it was one of the few that I felt wasn't talking down to me (I was five when it started airing). The best part of this movie for me was the depictions of how each faction handled succession, because it underlined the differences in their philosophies better than anything that had happened previously. Optimus knew he was dying and attempted to choose his successor; whereas Megatron, on the verge of death, refused to let go of his status, was discarded as trash by his not-so-trusted second, and succession was decided through trial by combat. Obviously I couldn't articulate it in just that way when I was seven; I just thought it was a really cool scene.
I definitely remember seeing this movie in theaters when it came out. My Aunt that passed away 2years ago took me and my brother to see it and she cried when Optimus prime died. Just seeing the clips from the reaction got me misty eyed and when Hot rod became the new prime and the song started it made me cry hard and I haven’t cried in years. Thanks for this it brought back so many memories.
The movie that killed Sunbow Studios, they just didn't know it at the time. It was both the best & worst thing they did. One of the DVD/Blu ray sets of this film (the set that had the hologram cover IIRC), had an Easter egg/documentary on it. Hasbro & Sunbow studios got letters from both kids & parents who were outraged. They even got death threats. Rodimus Prime who replaced Optimus didn't take, so they brought back Optimus, he was THAT iconic of a character. This movie was the reason Duke wasn't killed off in the GI Joe animated flick. The damage was done though. I had at least 3 of those toys that were killed off in the movie.
It's funny that you said "Hot Rodimus," because that's his name in Japan. I first watched this movie cold (like you), but I watched it a couple more times and got more into it. We had an old VHS tape of "The Return of Optimus Prime" (is it a spoiler if it's the episode title?) lying around and I became a Transformers fan for life.
4:45 Eric Idle was part of the famous Monty Python's Flying Circus. Another one of his 80s cameos was as the accident enduring bicyclist student in National Lampoon's European Vacation.
This film was the on-screen debut of Arcee, who would end up becoming arguably the most famous female Cybertronian/Transformer of all time. In her original incarnation, she was a type of car that was really popular with (and chiefly associated with) women at one point (have no clue what the make and/or model is, even though I've tried to find it constantly), but at some point in her lore/history her vehicle form was changed to a motorcycle, and that version is the one she's kept to this day.
Is it any wonder Gen-X is the way we are? We saw Optimus Prime killed in the first fifteen minutes of this movie, saw John Wayne killed in movies, watched seven people die live on TV during school with the Challenger, then as we were becoming adults, saw Dale Earnhardt die in the Daytona 500 live on TV.
I was 11 when movie came out and I lmao when prowl and optimus rusted, if the animators would have went with their original storyboards and fused ironhide and ratchet together then blow them apart, and had Prowl turn into a pool of molten metal it would've been a better time. Long live StarScreams ghost.
So this film was rated PG when it was released in theatres. This was to give it the best chance of making its money back because PG films got more showings than U rated films. And how did they get the PG? Was it the all the robots getting blown up and dying? Nope, it was the use of the word “shit” which Spike says after the bomb in Moon Base 2 fails to damage Unicron
This whole movie was about selling new toys. I dont remember watching this but my mom told me a story about me 3 years old at the theater. Back then Optimus Prime was my favorite transformer. She had to carry me out of the theater screaming and crying at 3 years old because they killed Optimus. It was so controversial that they rolled back Duke dying in the GI Joe animated movie. He only went into a coma.
My family was too broke to take me to see this in theaters, so I was BEYOND excited when we visited my rich aunt the next year, who had a… gasp! VCR!!!… and she rented this and Top Gun for me and my cousins. It was even more agonizing, though, because they wanted to watch Top Gun first, and the tape sat right there… on the coffee table… mocking me.
For my money, Peter Cullen as Optimus in Transformers and Kevin Conroy as Batman in Batman: The Animated Series are the pinnacle of animated hero voices.
Cullen's story of his brother and how he came up with Prime's voice gets me emotional every time I hear it.
Frank Welker be like: "allow me to introduce myself"
And Let's not forget Luke Skywalker, AKA, Mark Hamill as the Joker is the OG
Definitely. They're both awesome

This movie single handedly cemented the field of child therapy in the 80s. Not even Robotech, with the death of Roy Fokker and Ben Dixon (in back to back episodes, no less), could do that.
So true!

The invasion of the Autobot shuttle hits so differently if you watched it as a kid vs if you never grew up with it and are watching it for the first time now.
For us it was about the brutally violent deaths of four major characters from the first two seasons. (I personally found Prowl’s death rather creepy, with the glowing eyes and smoke from the mouth)
In fact the body count was really rather shocking given that no one ever died in the original series.
Orson after he got to heaven:
Maybe if I didn't do that transformers movie where my character (unicron) died,
I wouldn't be here now.....
It was also the last movie for Scatman Cruthers (Jazz) and Roger C. Carmel (Cyclonus/Quinteson magistrate).
18:33 Unicron: "OH, Cybertronian meatball!?!" - "Spicy!"...
23:52 When I saw this I was like "Here comes the Australian robots!"
38:00 I love how that's actually a good point that comes later in the tv show
This was traumatic as a kid in the 80s watching this at 5am in the morning back in 1987 seeing the autobots getting wiped out, ironhide killed with megatrons cannon to the face and then the hardest death scene too watch, the death of optimus prime. im not ashamed to say that i cried hard as a little kid. you have to understand back then optimus prime was a role model an icon to us kids and when his death hit it was like losing a member of your family. some kids even locked themselves in their room it was that powerful.
One of my most favourite, but also traumatic movies of my childhood. Some of it scarred me for life, but I still love it.
That widespread trauma is why they changed the GI Joe movie to just put Duke in a coma instead of killing him as planned.
@@JeshuaSquirrelYes, with a VO announcement. "Hey! Duke is alive!"
The funniest thing is they put the "Shit" and "Damn it" in for the PG rating so that parents would have to accompany their kids to the movie, allowing the kids to tell their parents exactly which characters/toys they wanted them to get.
,😂👍 @19:46 "They're going to go PARK somewhere..." ??? LMAO 😂
The main theme of this movie was "Hey kids, your toys are all dead, get your parents to buy these new ones!"
They even gave Cobra Commander.. I mean... 'Old Snake' a cameo in Transformers ;D
43:00 Hot Rod (before becoming Rodimus Prime) was actually called Hot Rodimus in the Japanese version
Glad you finally had a chance to watch the greatest movie ever made.
after the movie came out in 1986 , I used to watch reeuns on weekends @ Grand Lake theater in CA , for only 25c for kids.
@@markplott4820 That's awesome! Today, it's not implausible to pay up to $25 for a ticket.

@niorgatherer As A Ghost LOL! 👻🚫🤖

optimus dying in this made the makers of the gi joe movie change the end and forced the to keep duke alive. duke was supposed to really die at the end of the gi joe movie, but there was such a huge backlash against prime dying that they had to add in an adr line about duke surviving to try and salvage the movie.
Huffer's death served as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices involved in the battle for control of the Transformers' home planet, Cybertron
Despite the loss of Huffer, his sacrifice only fueled the determination of his Autobot comrades to continue their fight against the Decepticons. His memory and unwavering spirit live on, inspiring others to fight for justice and peace amidst the ongoing conflict
14:41 I agree the 80's were brutal, but they helped those of us who were children in that era to become the men and women we are today.
A talent like him is extremely rare.
What are we gunna do now?"
Keep in mind, this movie was intended for 6-10 year old kids, many of whom regarded Optimus Prime as a father figure. The deaths in the film are characters those kids grew with for 2 years of episodes. This is one of the most violent film for children ever.
This movie was formative for me. I love this movie so much.
Orson Wells passed away before the movie released and never saw his performance on screen.
Megatron so badass he's rockin' a mullet.
Sheepishly
“Megatron….is that you”?
“HERE’S A HINT”!!!
always laughed when Galvatron said that, lol.
18:45 - 18:47
Damn, I didn't expect a curse word to be said in children movie based on a children series.
Hearing unicrons voice in the theater with surround sound speakers was actually kinda terrifying back in the day
Ultra Magnus was voiced by the late Robert Stack, who was the host of the popular series "Unsolved Mysteries" for 11 seasons.
Star Scream always trying to take over Megatron's spot was always a great story. Ok, lol. Good edit. 34:10
prime's death was so traumatizing and the backlash so great, they actually had to change the ending of the GI joe movie, where another popular character was suppose to die.
hasbro thought that these characters were just toys but to guys like me, they were more than that.
17:44 - Megatron wasn't the only one through with his shit. The producers were sick of having to bail the voice actor out of jail.
Wow
17:09 "Just creating more toys for kids to buy."
More than you could imagine, viewers. 😂😂😂😂
As a kid it always bothered me that so many Autobots straight-up died while, with the exception of Starscream, the Decepticons just get upgraded into powerful, new bodies. Even then, Starscream gets to come back as a ghost.
A lot of fans were upset by that.

Hasbro was literally killing off our old toys …. brilliant marketing..
I wonder how many kids entombed Ironhide, Ratchet, Brawn, and Prowl..? lol
I still have 3 of my transformers with all their pieces. Ramjet, Dirge and Thrust.
Actually in the G1 series the Dinobots were constructed on earth by Wheeljack after he visited the Smithsonian museum.
Though i did want to give some suggestions on episodes for kind of an abridged key episode binge if the Mr/Mrs or anyone else here want to watch the G1 series:
[Season 1]
-More Than Meets the Eye (pilot episodes 1, 2, and 3)
-Fire in the Sky (great episode with the Robotech toy that became a Transformer, SkyFire (aka Jetfire)
-SOS DinoBots (debut of the DinoBots and yes they were created by Wheeljack/Ratchet with Spikes knowledge of Dinos like everyone’s saying here)
-The Ultimate Doom (parts 1, 2, and 3) (partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on)
-War of the Dinobots (debut of Swoop & Snarl)
-A Plague of Insecticons (debut of the Insecticons)
-Heavy Metal War (debut of Devastator)
[Season 2]
-Megatron's Master Plan (parts 1 & 2) (also partly what Transformers Dark of the Moon based its story on)
-The Key to Vector Sigma (parts 1 & 2)
-StarScream's Brigade (great episode for Starscream)
[Season 3 (after the events of the Movie)]
-The Five Faces of Darkness 5 parter story (gives background on the Quintessons from the film)
-Ghost in the Machine (if you want to see what happens to StarScream and Unicron’s Head)
-Call of the Primatives (great episode for Grimlock)
-Dark Awakening (pre-story to the last 2 episodes)
-The Return of Optimus Prime (parts 1 & 2. Redeems the sad part of the movie.)
Don’t bother with the Japanese Headmasters series as it’s its own continuity after season 3 and quite depressing/nonsensical (imo).
This was actually the movie that taught me about death with the loss of Optimus. It was a very formative movie for a whole generation.
18:45 That line of profanity caused an outrage from parents when their children were watching this in the theater, which was a huge controversy at the time.
The thing about the Quentsons is that it doesn't matter to them if your guilty or innocent, you will die by the Sharkacons.
The DINOBOTS in the Comic Books were actually ancient. Reading that as a kid was very surreal…. Ratchet woke up in the Jurassic period and walks around being spied on by Shock-Wave.. it’s CRAZY
In the TV show they just find a lot of old bones and skeletons of dinosaurs and decide to make Dinobots to help combat the Decepticons and Devastator.
@@kevinstull8552 I remember they kicked Optimus Primes ass after Megatron lied to them.

Optimus Prime is the Batman of the Transformers Universe;when he died you can't just give some random dude the mantle.

“For kids?”
“Who??”
"We need to lighten the load."

i still got a VHS tape of this !!!! :D loved this movie. Also the person who does optimus primes voice then still does the voices now in todays movies
I looked for years (before ebay was around) to find a 📼 VHS copy. Finally found it at a comic book store 9 years ago.
“How do Transformers reproduce?”

So, a bunch of male Transformers line up alongside a conveyor belt that has a female Transformer on it........
That why Gen X rules.
one of my favorite moments in gaming history is the final mission in Saints Row 4: "Punch the Shark"
skydiving through Zinyak's spaceship in power armor, dodging death lasers and killing Zin foot soldiers like piñata's with your hentai bat, all set to Stan Bush "The Touch".

Just to nitpick, Prowl wasn't a Porsche; he was a Datsun (Nissan) 280Z, as were Bluestreak and Smokescreen.
@@Brickerbrack Damn, you're right. All this time I thought he was a Porsche like Jazz, just transformed differently.

I like that characters actually die in this one.
I remember laughing out loud at Spike swearing after realizing they did nothing to Unicron.
I'm not a big rock and roll fan but when it's put in a game or like in this movie it's the greatest compliment.
He was also in a many comedies that are underrated.
Arcre voiced by Sue Blu, Tina's mom on Friday the 13th part 7
Tears were shed by 11 year Olds too...😂
Is it any wonder Gen-X is the way we are?
This movie put a nail in the coffin of my childhood. I just finished sixth grade and was going into junior high and this movie f***** me up.
This whole movie was about selling new toys. I dont remember watching this but my mom told me a story about me 3 years old at the theater. Back then Optimus Prime was my favorite transformer.
