- After spending a few days exploring the incredible city of Taipei we took a train along the east coast of Taiwan to Hualien County! The main aim of our visit - to experience the amazing Taroko National Park, see Taroko Gorge and hike the Shakadang Trail! We also visited the beautiful (but VERY windy) Qixingtan Beach. We decided to rent a scooter to get us around the national park and we're so glad we did!
We also share our thoughts on travel to Hualien - is it worth it and how much does it cost to get around by scooter?

Hualien really surprised us! Taroko National Park is incredibly beautiful, Qixingtan beach was stunning (even if it was extremely windy 😅) and we enjoyed exploring the town too.

You won't regret to try some 扁食 in Hualiang, it is delicious, it kind of like dumplings, but softer and soak in soup. A famous dish in Hualiang.

I still remember the first time I visited the east coast of Hualian. It taught me what really blue is.

scooter ride must be tiry all the way to Hualien Taroko....but I love the BGM and all the sightseeing along the creek and waterfalls, amazingly beautiful
It was a long journey for sure, but we really enjoyed it. The scenery was just beautiful!! Thank you for the kind words, we loved Taiwan and will be back one day ❤️
There is also a trail at the height of Taroko, where you can see big falls.😊

Riding a scooter! It is very integrated into the Taiwanese lifestyle! There are also many special scenic spots in Taiwan, such as Alishan, Sun Moon Lake, etc. You are welcome to experience them.

Thanks guys! Hualien was so beautiful we wish we’d have stayed longer, and yeah the sea was crazy! Only we could visit the beach in the height of Taiwanese winter 🤣🤣 Driving was really good, the road are super smooth and quiet…there are obviously stricter traffic rules but thankfully there are also dedicated lanes for bikes, making it easier overall. The drive from Hualien to Taroko is fairly long but with those views you really don’t mind 😄

Apparently there’s a closed off trail in Taroko that leads down to a riverside hot spring pool! So there’s at least one place in the gorge where the water isn’t freezing
I believe a rockfall destroyed part of it so it’s closed off, though I’ve heard people still go down to it. It seems a bit dangerous though!

Haha we loved riding the scooter around south east Asia and Taiwan wasn’t too difficult! A lot more rules on the road though 😁 It was a lot of fun!

FYI the beaches on the east coast of Taiwan tend to be rocky while those of west coast and southern tip tend to be sandy. East coast beaches have choppy waves from the Pacific and pebblie/rocky surfaces, but the view against the backdrop of Central Mountain Range is singular snd stunning. For a topical Island style sand beach, Kenting is probably the most famous.

A lot of people want what you guys have.
Actually, the beach in Hualien is quite dangerous due to the unpredictable and large waves grabbing unsuspecting people into the ocean. Exercise caution and keep a safe distance from the water. There are more suitable beaches in Taiwan for swimming that are equipped with lifeguards and shark nets.
We can imagine it’s a dangerous beach, the waves were coming in fast. We definitely wouldn’t have gone in, it would be SO cold haha. Very beautiful though!

We looked at Kenting, but as you can tell we were travelling Taiwan during winter so it was really cold and not quite beach weather!
We fell in love with Taiwan and will be back to explore more of the south!!

@@jamieandhannah_ My recommendation are Taitung County, Kenting in Pingtung County, Kaohsiung City, Alishan in Chiayi County, Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County. Enjoy it.
