It was just super dirty, he got it used cheap, and it’s pure beaver, very high X rating, maybe an old 100x, I’m not sure.. but it had a thick coating of stains, so I took off the top layer of felt, buffed it to a fine finish, and then released the silver belly powder that lay beneath the layers of smog and smoke stains, sweat and fingerprints.. there’s an off white powder that lives beneath, unwed to free it up, then distribute the powder into the felt..u can see the powder coming out after I got that top layer off. Normally I wouldn’t go this deep, but he had a gig and wanted it clean, it worked fine..we knew the sweat wouldn’t come out, it’s all the way through..but everything else turned a nice, powdery silver belly, and I gave it a “Gus” crease.. he was very happy, I think I got a $20 tip!🤪
I never realized hats can be sanded that aggressively. I have a lot of vintage hats but I don't let them get as dirty as the one in this video, but if one does I now know how to fix it. That antique hat stretcher is an interesting piece.
I don’t usually sand THIS aggressively, but this hat was FILTHY and he wanted to wear it to a party, or Halloween or something..it was the only way. For a nice fur felt, I don’t take off nearly as much felt.
Kevin, So good to see you back in the store. Question-I have a Stratoliner SE that is really beat up and mishapen-[1] Can you clean, stiffen, and reshape it? [2] Retack the hatband onto the hat? [3] If yes, what would the approximate cost be? [4] How should I address the box? Whole Lotta Thanks, Ed
Just would cost shipping, like $15.50 if the brim is curling, it’s a common issue, the felt is very thin and light on those. Can’t get those perfect, the felt is very, very thin. But if u send it to me in a week or two I can do it, I’m unable to get to it right now, but in a couple of weeks u can call us, I’ll do it for u, or try my best
Various things, many different ones, nothing super coarse, or very, very fine.. anything in the middle works, maybe similar to an Emory board or a little finer is fine.. I use many different types, usually I just use a disposable, flexible sanding block from 3m, these light red ones, they’re not particularly fine..
I have a Stetson that my dad got from Marlboro probably 25 years or 30 years ago and yes it has been damaged over the years I would like to know how much it would cost to fix it reshape it put a new sweatband in it maybe one that it's a flexible sweatband to do multiple sizes I'm just curious to see how much it would cost cuz I would like to start wearing it and memory of my father who passed away
Reshaping and all that is free, a sweatband u need to call our hatmaker Van, he can do it for you, I don’t know the price but it’s under $100, there’s a repair price list on our site www.jjhatcenter.com
Yes,the Owner got it cheap and wanted Kevin to briefly clean it fast. As long as you don't sand the Hat it will remove a top layer of grime quickly. Great find for the new Owner!
I have a Stetson western 10x straw that is so ungodly deformed due to a couple years of abuse, water, etc. Is there a point in which a hat is past reshaping?
Most of them look horrible first, flat, crushed.. not really. Things that we can’t fix.. holes, sweat stains, cuts and moth damage .. but we can always fix the shape of it’s a fur felt, I stiffen it if it’s too soft, clean it, open the shape up to a round crown, and then crease it again..then I flatten the brim and reshape it.. I did a few yesterday that were way worse than this, they were flat, crushed, matted, stained, shrunken, they actually came out great.. so, not really, most folks only have to toss out a hat when u they have some holes or sweat stains.. anything else can be restored fairly quickly but if it’s a cheaper hat like wool, then yes.
That was very neat to watch and the outcome was as well. Thank you for sharing.
I truly appreciate your efforts to educate me, er, us on the Hat, the artistry you display is much appreciated, kind sir.
Nice Job 👍
Hat work turned into Fine art!!
Wow,that’s a cool hat.😎
Man I'd love to get ahold of an old pure beaver hat like that!! I'd rather that hat over a new one any day!
Definitely looks like one of your more challenging hat restoration.

Did you use sandpaper to clean?

Flexible sanding blocks usually , yes.. for westerns only
Was that a Gus crease?
Kinda. Yeah

@@dkstott29 Sounds Italian😂
I gotta Resistol Montana Peak that I do my best to NEVER clean up. It looks legit af.
That hat looks like cardboard. It has seen alot of use but still looks great.
Lots of Hat Stiffner used on it. That is a top of the Line pure Beaver Cowboy Hat(10X +) very old too. Century Model
I would think that a naptha bath would have taken off a lot of that grime without having to vigorously sand off that felt off
kev my bro
☮️🤠✌️
Dawg it’s got a lot of grim.
LOVE THE TEE SHIRT KEV🌶🎩
That hat sounds brittle
Lot of beaver snowflakes flying off that hat, lol
