I recently got the 6.5” depth version of this. It sounds awesome; I’ve used it in my studio and live, and it’s fantastic! Thanks for the demo, and fun idea to swap hoops… I might have to try that!
I remember reading about that snare drum olympics thing w/ this drum years ago. I'd kinda forgotten all about it but I may have to pick up one of these as well. Pretty sure my Pork Pie Big Black Brass 6.5x14" has WorldMax parts in it. And I absolutely love it
That Pork Pie BoB is a great drum! I've had two of them over the years, and dudes keep making me sell them to them. ha! This is basically its little brother.
I received this drum today, looks really good. Looks like they are now being delivered with a better snare strainer than the one on your drum. Now I just have to go to the practice room and tune it up:-)
Is that DC hoop "stepped"? It appears to have sections that are lower than adjacent sections (like stair steps) - was that purchased that way? Thanks for your snare drum featurettes!! Really dig!!
great video as usual Mike!. Is there any Gretsch snare on your collection? I'm asking because it's such a legendary company, but also because i remember hearing Steve Maxwell talk about the 60's gretsch snares being "boxy" (and how this "tainted" the company snares for a couple decades). Also, would love to hear something by Fibes (i've always loved that Buddy Rich snare). All the best from Chile!
This guy is so good at getting the sounds he’s lookin for out of a drum! Love the idea of a kick patch on a snare! I’m Stealing that move for sure…
Hey, thanks!
I have the 6th and a 1/2 by 14 version of that drum with triple flying hoops and I absolutely love it . You're Right about the honk

I put a diecast batter hoop on my 04 DW 10 & 6 maple snare and it sounded perfect to my ear. What a great trick.
FWIW, the stock single-flanged hoops on this drum are chrome-over-brass. It's an incredible value.
Is that true? Wow
Cool demo. Getting ready to buy a Black Dog shell by World Max!
Gordon Nunn do it!
Really nice video Mike .... lots of information. Thank you !!
Thanks John!
Always insightful, thanks Mike!
DavidBcg thanks!

That's great to hear! That old strainer is meh, at best. Congrats!
I was always tempted to buy one of these off the drum factory direct website. Sounds great, classic fat brass
Beautiful!
Pheach Shorbet thank you!

Big Kick LEO it is! It was something Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin was working on to get different rimshot sounds.
where does one find one of those stepped die cast hoops? I own this exact drum and would be very interested in doing this upgrade.
Sounds really close to the PDP Ace black nickel over brass
I have that same shirt....courtesy of Bruce Hagwood at NAMM..... Do you have any RBH snares to feature? Maybe the poplar? That sounded really good.
I have a few drums made by Bruce that'll be featured soon. His stuff is incredible!

Felipe Opazo Ortiz I have one Gretsch snare, a 6.5x14 chrome over brass. I might feature that one soon!
How similar to a Black Beauty is that snare?
Sonically quite similar, but it has a rolled shell instead of a seamless shell. That translates into a slightly less vibrant tone.
@@MikeDawsonDrums if it is just a bit less resonant, I say it is still worth the money.
