  • Let me show you how to get started with an automatic drawing using my patent-pending 'snake' technique. I'll show how you can gradually add variety and complexity to the picture and even enter a flow state. Let's get started- all you need is your hands, something to draw with and to be in the moment.

Hey Darren, thank you for this video and the article on Pocket. Used to be an artist I suppose. I focused mainly on realistic portraits with colored pencils. I started to go to college for art, but literally stopped going due to an extreme case of depression I was in and an abusive relationship. I stopped drawing then, but I would doodle here and there. I got back into drawing but cartoons (not very good), but I'd use these doodles for homemade Christmas cards and such. I love anime and manga and really want to get back into the drawing game, but damn it's terrifying to even think about. I dusted off one of my old sketchbooks from my short college days and literally sat with it and a pencil in my hand for 20 minutes staring at the paper before giving up and putting it away. Going to try to force myself to get past this. My goal is to get over my dang fear of drawing and come up with my own anime/manga style. I have a new set of prisma colored pencils in storage from my art days that I never even opened. It's just so intimidating because the perfectionist in myself constantly compares what ability I had to all the wonderful art I see and I think, "Damn, I'll never be that good so why try?" Defeatist attitude, but I'm trying. I don't need to be the best. I just have to enjoy what I am doing. I apologize for the novel here. :P

I hear similar stories a lot. The self-judging voice can be powerful. I hope with a bit of effort and mindful attention you can overcome it. It's good to doodle, and it's also really good to copy your favourite styles. Don't put too much pressure on yourself straight away to make incredible work. Just try initially to reconnect with the experience of drawing. I wish you all the best. Please let me know how you go.

Great to hear, I've uploaded another video on applying these ideas, particularly flow, to using watercolours. I hope it's useful for you, good luck with your creation- don't judge yourself and remember to focus on the physical experience.

Thanks so much for this. I really do think "I can't draw a stick figure with a ruler" so this was an eye opener for me. I have some fine, coloured sharpies and will be trying this.

I read your article and I agree with most of what you said. I really think copying your fav art is probably the best way to get better at drawing because its such a huge shortcut to understand the fundamentals over practice, but also is a quick remedy for when we dont know what to draw. Also, I have been intensely drawing for the past 2 months and I'm now starting to notice a huge change in flow/time, probably because the process of line making is getting less difficult thus more resources to pay more attention. I have not found a way to do art professionally but hopefully I can soon.

Thanks Persona. Copying your favourite artists is just another tool in the toolbox, but whatever gets you drawing is good! Glad to hear you're getting more easily into the flow zone, that's one of the most rewarding things about drawing :)

@@darrencfisher I liked the process ☺️ but I got carried away and did too much, which for me over complicated my page. Will try again 😁
