I was shipped to Alaska via the US Army in 2018 and I loved it so much, I'm seriously considering going back now that my contract is up. Colorado is alright, but it's nowhere near as peaceful or intriguing as Alaska.

My wife and I just moved to Anchorage. Couple things.1. If you buy kayaks "if you haven't already" look into Vibe Kayaks Yellow fin 100. Great kayak at a decent price. We lived in Montana for a few years and loved it too. If you guys are looking for a fishing fanatic to go fishing with, hit me up. I'm probably your parent's age but I always have the skinny on where good fishing is regardless where I am. hehe. I think you made a great call on Alaska. So far we love it.

@@greatalaskanjourney3512 I don't know a ton about the fishing here as I just moved here. I've done that type in other states. As far as fishing, I have been doing it as a hobby and professionally for over 45 years. hehe I just don't know much about ice fishing other than IT'S COLD. I will get with you in the spring and we can find the good fishing spots. I fished non-stop when I lived in FL or anywhere I went to travel for work. I caught a 6 foot Leopard shark in SF bay that was really cool. They have some amazing colors. Not like the plain old grey like in Florida.

I totally "get" everything you both said. I moved to Wasilla from Jacksonville, Florida. Florida is nice, but SOOO crowded. It's nice not having to deal with all the traffic and crowds. I can sit on my front porch, enjoy the quiet, the trees, the moose and even the Northern Lights! The "con" I most agree with is the mail. I have 2 addresses: where I live and where I get my mail. Yet, some things can be delivered to our house. I'm not sure I quite figured it out yet... except Williams-Sonoma delivers to our house.

    • @greatalaskanjourney3512

It is nice not to have to worry about traffic anymore, especially out here in Wasilla. There are a few spots where traffic can get heavy but it’s still nothing compared to LA.
The best part is the peace and quite out here but close enough to stores.
I am finding out that not everything can be bought online living here because we have found places that will not ship to Alaska. Just big item things.
We saw the northern lights earlier this year and were just amazing!!

Damn this is so inspiring. I’ve lived in Southern California my whole life for 32 years now and I feel the same way you both felt living here. And I live in one of the nicer suburban areas an hour south east of LA.
I feel like life I’m Southern California has become toxic to a level I can’t stand anymore and every cell in my body is screaming out at me to gtfo. Like, my internal geiger counter is off the charts.
I was recently diagnosed with an auto immune illness and I truly think the circumstances of my life out here are hugely responsible for my deteriorating health and that it would be so much healthier for me to get away. I’ve been looking into places on Whidbey Island in Washington state and even all the way up in Alaska like yourselves.
Watching this definitely has me feeling more encouraged to get out and it isn’t like I can’t ever come back to visit family. I still have tons of friends and family I can visit in California who can always come visit me too.
    Anyway, great video, take care.

Hope you are enjoying the Alaska summer! I lived in Wasilla in 2000 for a year, then moved to Anchorage for work. I moved back to MI a couple of years later. I loved living in AK, I met my husband there. Fast forward 20 years and we just bought a house in Wasilla. I needed to be near Hatcher's Pass, it's my favorite place to just "be". Definitely ride the Alaskan Rail system, it's spectacular!!! Take a train to Seward. I moved there by myself, didn't know anyone, I made so many lifelong friends there. "...the grocery stores are full. I mean, we haven't had any products missing there...."
That isn't always the case so at least stock up on rice and pasta and other staple items just in case. I think it was earlier this year we ran out of rice. None on the shelf. Like ANYWHERE! And certain popular products go fast. Sometimes I can't find half n' half at the local Walmart. It is rare but it happens enough for me to be worried everytime I go to buy more. I live in Eagle River so it is smaller than Wasilla, but I am closer to Anchorage.
I ordered a lot of furniture when I moved here a little over 2 years ago and some of the items took many months to come in. Some items arrived 6-8 months after I ordered it.
    Other things:
Amazon can take many more days to get here.
Some online stores offer free shipping but it may not apply to Alaska.
Some online stores do not ship to Alaska.
Residents that have lived in Alaska an entire calendar year (January to December) can apply for the Permanent Fund Divided (PFD) the following year in January.
Some flights are cheaper from Alaska than other places in the lower 48. (I don't know why 😐)
When people find out you live in Alaska, they always want to ask you about the constant darkness in the winter time and constant sunlight in the summer.
When people see AK as the state on your address, some people think it is the abbreviation for Arkansas.
On the Weather Channel, you will hardly ever see anything about Alaska. It's as if we are forgotten (and I am not mad about that). 😉

    • @greatalaskanjourney3512
      @greatalaskanjourney3512 Рік тому

We have learned to stock up on the staple items. We have prepared for winter and stocked up on canned goods, just in case we don’t want to leave the house or if we can’t.
We ordered our couch set but had to wait 6 months for the love-seat to arrive.
We do use Amazon a lot and its helpful.
You are absolutely right about people asking you always about daylight. We always use the weather app to see our weather in the area, but for winter I feel like they can’t even predict our weather ☃️🥶😂😂😂

Wasilla is a great area, but there isn’t as many close amenities until you get to Anchorage which is an hour drive. It is calmer, less traffic, and less populated, even tho it’s a fast growing area.
Anchorage is a huge area, you could do city living or country living as well, plus there is so much there (when there are products not in the stores in Wasilla, they always tell us that the anchorage store has it in stock).
I always love visiting Fairbanks. I visited there twice but that city is out there by itself.
The next couple of weeks we are updating our garden and expanding our homestead and Wasilla allows us to do that better but close enough to everything too!
