The older I grow, the more I appreciate this song from 23 years ago and the more empathy I feel for Mariah, who came from a dysfunctional family and later trapped in what she described as an abusive marriage.
in the studio recording, she uses a softer tone and seems detached (at least in the main vocal). here, she used chest voice for the whole thing and belted out the bridge with all the passion she had. not only does this song mean a lot to her, here she tells us how intense the story behind it is. she won’t avoid the pain she’s articulating, she’s feeling it full force and facing it with courage. this performance is my favorite if the song and maybe of her whole career; i don’t know what exactly each and every lyric means, but i can feel how meaningful it is. thank you for sharing this.
that endurance & perseverance she has even as a young child, that's why she always jokes abt being eternally 12 as she experienced all these since childhood. As in the lyrics: ""And I learned many things Little ones shouldn't know" "And though time's rolled by Still feel like that child" "Funny how one can learn To grow numb to the madness And block it away I left the worst unsaid Let it all dissipate And I try to forget''
2:44 listen to what word she changed here: on the studio recording, she says “thankfully i, woke up in time.” none of that here. “THANK *GOD* THAT I, WOKE UP IN TIME!”
If life is also about having beautiful moments and being grateful for them , I thank God for being alive in this lifetime and seeing and listening to this beautiful human .
The vulnerable, personal, and expressive way Mariah sings is something truly unique and uncomparable. And .... How does a human being have such a complex tone with so many textures? How? It' s insane
Omg mariah's live is always better than studio version altho there are flaws here and there but mariah make up by adding adlib here n improvisation here n there
Remember also that on the album version this song is recorded mostly in head voice and falsetto but here she is using her chest and head belting which makes it sound a bit harsher, still beautiful and unique. The arrangement in this song is quite complicated
This was actually 1998. I thought it was 1997 too, but in the interview with Rosie from this section, Rosie shows the audience pictures of Mariah and Arethra at divas live, which was in April 1998. So this performance had to be after that date.

I've always think about her hand movements. Particulary in her early days it looks like she naturally did those to flown through the songs. Bumpin up the stamina and make It easy to push through the melodies. Like in waves. Then she heard everybody notice the fact, and she almost shut It down. She cages that body outlet the moment the world notice about It. And It transitions to her overall performance wise and confidence. Mariah...work those hands Mariah. 🙌
I take the hand movements as proof of singing live. Whenever she sings live her hands can't stop holding the compass for her. It's a Mariah movement and I love to see her do it. Her figers are also a butterfly when she riffs and I live that
It's the organic in the moment movement of being a performer and an artist. I love it when she feels the spirit of a song and runs across stage like in her 1993 Xmas special at St Patrick's Cathedral. Sometimes the church get up in you.

I'm so glad she overcame her obstacles!!!! she's too much of great beautiful magnificent talented woman to think that her Destiny could have ever been interrupted by her struggles...... I mean she could've ended up like her sister!..... and we would have never had Mariah Carey :(
Somebody should edit these vocals into the studio stripped version. One of her fans do it! She sounds better here, than on the album version, cause she's singing in chest dominate voice.
A beautiful song from the best pop/hip-hop album of the ‘90s and one of the greatest ever produced… Butterfly 🦋 is perfect front to back. EVERY DAMN SONG. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Her voice was so nervous here. I think that some songs are hard for Mariah to sing because of the emotions and memories they bring back to her. I can listen to this woman sing all day long.... 🎶🙏🏾❤️
You're right, it was an emotional performance, but she's still a perfectionist, she must struggle a lot with those two sides of her, but i think it's the very essence of her magic and talent :)
I came here after her stellar GMA 2020 performance.

Bingo
Me too hahaha Mariah is Mariah!
What a vulnerable, relatable song.
They call her the wind Mariah. This song she sings for every child within us who feels like an outcast .😔
Can I have your number baby?
My favorite Mariah's song ❤❤❤❤

Yes and witnessing the choices her older sister made forced her to be guarded and introverted.
Yeah, look at her bigger sister. We all know now what was going on there....
Nenne Veiden ok so you’re putting faith in an addicted prostitute with a history of lying
Exactly inspite of being multi talented in both singing and writing.

@@setapartforHim this song is about her childhood not a abusive marriage
@@tonnymitch4016 exactly. It's 100% about her childhood and growing up with abandonment issues ect

Pryna Catria I said something positive ? Lol
That "Thank God that I woke up in time" was powerful. That part made this performance for me❤

Mijail Dimopoulos I’m always impressed when people know all these music terms like head voice and falsetto and can pinpoint it
Maybe her voice was tired and could not produce a quality falsetto and head tone..@@mijalakis3

and what's the best part abt this is that she was the one who wrote this lyrical and melodic masterpiece👑

My favorite performance of this song. Means so much more after you read about the song's origin and development in her (amazing) book
Amo su tono de voz, wao ♥ hasta ahora no encuentro una cantante con un color de voz tan bonito como el de ella. que bendición su talento ♥
