The Japanese-American actor got his start in stand-up and transitioned to TV and film over the course of his career. But it was his performance as Mr. Miyagi that changed his life forever.
However, Morita’s success wasn’t easily earned. From his childhood illness that almost ended his life, his family’s time in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, and his struggles with alcoholism, the celebrated actor had to fight for each of his successes. Miyagi has effectively immortalized Morita, not only on the big screen but in the lives of hundreds of children who have taken up karate because of it.
And in the awesome series Cobra Kai!

Dude.. more like thousands. But yes
millions not thousands
A really good documentary to watch about his life “More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story” truly touched my heart
I am a long time martial arts student and instructor. I think one of Pat Moritas greatest legacies is the number of people who have chosen to become students of the martial arts after and as a result of seeing "The karate kid"
I would never have expected to be so beloved and well known if I suffered the same fate he did in his early days. Mad respect that he pulled through it all and ended up touching the hearts of many people.
As an addict in active recovery for 22 months, I can relate to Morita's struggle. Makes me miss him even more
I don't know why, but it makes me respect him more. Best wishes on your recovery.
I hope u recover soon, I miss pat too🥺
Bro shut up this has nothing to do with it u did it it self
I hope your sticking with your recovery been rewatching all the Karate Kid movies and the show and it led me to this video
He was one of the first celebrity deaths that hit me hard. Loved and respected Mr.Morita. Truly a talent. I hope he is making them laugh in heaven
I grew up in Hawai'i and he also was a big deal there in the 1980s. He would cameo in our local shows and comedy skits...since we have such a large Japanese population he fit right in as a local 🥰
Yess! Karate kid II was filmed in Oahu, Hawaii!
Thanks for this. He was the first Asian face I remember from childhood. Happy Days was a staple in my house. I loved him in everything I ever saw him in. I even really like Collision Course with him and Jay Leno in a kinda proto Rush Hour .
That's interesting. The movie Karate Kid probably broke down so many barriers subconsciously. Sure there were stereotypes in it, but in most movies before that had strong negative stereotypes. This was such a legendary East meets West underdog film that really include cultural understanding. In other words, who knows how many racists would have been if they hadn't seen Karate Kid.
Tell your boss Wax on Wax off lol 30 years later and this infamous line is still used and everyone knows exactly what movie it's from lol
I grew up watching this man. Such a legend.
We named our little Pom-Chi Mr. Miyagi, and since we got him around Pat's birthday, we decided to honour Pat's memory by giving it to our Mr. M.
The world became a sadder place when Pat passed. May he rest in peace.
Addiction takes a lot of good people. Little over a year clean myself. Very cool to put up the number at the end.
Now knowing that Miyagi and The Emporer in Mulan are both Pat Morita, it makes me like the Mulan franchise even more. I always liked the movie Mulan and its sequels. I liked this video.
The reason Daniel's dojos name is Miyagi Do because he is holding Me Miyagi's legacy and I wish he was still there in Cobra Kai
Mr. Miyagi is the best!🔥
I loved that guy I swear
He played a character on one episode of Married with children too
One of the best episodes. What can we offer you? WHISKEY!
thanks for making this
Pat morita will always have a place in my heart
Same
Just put Pat Morita’s name in the title, we look at the thumbnail, we already he’s Mr Miyagi, so you might as well put his name.
Rest easy Pat.🙂🙏
I love what you do
Great review of his work. Thank you.
GREAT story Video!! 🔥I love the way you put it together!! ❤ Looking forward to your next one! It's awesome!! Keep up the Good work!!!!!
Will never forget Mr Miyagi.... RIP
In a time when Asians were portrayed as caricatures, Morita always brought a sense of class and self-respect to his roles. RIP.
Be specific when using the word ''Asian"
HE IS AN ICON AND A ROLE MODEL FOR GENARATIONS
RIP Pat Morita glad to have met you in 80s in Hawaii
This was actually a great video biography. Well done.
Thanks you
Amazing
Well you can say "He is immortalized through Television." but we can't escape what we cannot see
Very, very few leading roles for Asian males in movies and television, yes.... even today. Sure an Asian male could get some roles with the heavy Asian accent or if they looked like they knew martial arts or if they knew how to cook ramen or as a dumb cooky Asain dude. It took a while but Pat's great acting was on display as Mr Miyagi, thank goodness he finally got a chance. RIP "Noriyuk" Pat Morita
He would be great as a voice actor as splinter on TMNT
Worth a look.......
So sad, we lost agreat one. Thanks for all the years of entertainment you will be missed my friend. May you rest in peace.
Listen brother, you have to see about yourself first. I don't think I speak for everyone when I say we don't want to lose you like so many other UA-camrs. Your health and well being is just as important to us as you making great content for everyone. I will join you in this challenge. We care for you just as much. If you need to take a month off and unplug. You take care of yourself and be that better version of yourself. Take care man...
Mr Miyagi #Rip legend 🥋 🙏
fairfield ca legend
Armijo High School Alumni of 1949.
What was your favorite movie with Pat Morita?
Legends Never Die 😌❤
Legend 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I went to a KK2 celebration event in Little Tokyo. Pat Morita's daughter was there and mentioned that while everyone saw him as Mr Miyagi, she saw him as a real person. Imperfect and a real. Didn't quite know what she meant by that at the time. Didn't know he had struggled with alcoholism.
THE GOAT
The video is awesome&bizarre
Growing up in Hawaii Pat Morita was a regular on local TV shows, I remember him being on an afternoon kids show called "Checkers and Pogo" as a frequent guest and some local comedy specials with a spoof of the old Pepsi challenge where after drinking both colas he would declare "I like da cracka!"
Nevers try.. Never known..
😮😔 U 1000% right
Mi bad 😂😂😂😂😂😂
He also was a great stand up comedian
I loved his tv series O’Hara. He played a detective. Series ran from 87-88.
one minute old yeah
Recently watched Slapstick of Another Kind where Pat Morita played a teeny-tiny Chinese leader flying around in a giant fortune cookie. He was a real trooper and did his best to make chicken salad with what he was given.
😊👍🏻
Song?
GOD Bless
He also starred in the 1987 series..cop show 'O'Hara'
The times he was on Happy Days and some of the spin offs from that
he also starred in the 1976 movie Midway.
I wish UA-cam had a heart reaction instead of a thumbs up...
Sad, but not all bad. He did live an American dream with life complications. It happen!⚘
Can’t imagine having to live without addiction after 10 yrs illness followed by internment
I'm even more sad about his passing now
Should change the title to The Tragic Real-Life Story Of The Actor Pat Morita!!
His Mr Miyagi character duly set a legacy for Master Splinter and Yoda
I’m from tulelake
You did not mention his vital role on Happy Days and why is that
I wish the could of Ai him as a ghost or have more flash backs
I See...

"the Japanese weren't built to run, they were built to last”
Why when u guys do these videos y does it always say tragic
Second
Those were the times when though you were Californian you'd forced to talk in accents to hold stereotypes. I wonder if Americans would have done German, Dutch or Swedish accents in order to portray their ancestry but they didn't. America is the most surprising country.
Don't forget get also was on married with children for one episode
Turing Japanese S10 E21
Beginners luck
The roles would have been problematic today because people are sensitive and have no sense of humor
The stock images used for this video were terrible. Not relation whatsoever with the story of Pat Morita.
Please get help
He s. 87
First but what the fuk
Please provide mental health issues to kids having guns and pistols firing openly at the cost of innocents..
so happened?
don’t be mad i don’t watch this
Today I realized how racist the Karate kid actually was! 😬
I’m in Pat Morita’s homeland of Okinawa where I go to bath houses and sleep with the women there because of the mental stress the Kadena AB toxic leadership puts me though.
