Ooh, you’ve given me such inspiration. I’ve recently, regretfully, decided to take down the (tapestry) curtains that my late mother made. I’ve now decided not to give them away to a charity shop but to use them in my sewing. Making a jacket or coat is a brilliant idea.
The pockets look flawless! I love that you were able to create the coat you wanted out of a fabric that was light weight. It doesn't look like it used to be curtains at all! So cute
Amazing…..well done and without a pattern….so creative! 🤗🤗
Very impressive ! As someone else said, pressing with a clapper (wooden piece) helps in crisping the seams. Also, research « Bagging a jacket » method and you’ll be amazed at that ! Congrats on making your own pattern ! Looking forward to see what you do next !!! You have a got a great future in sustainable sewing !
You are such a talented young lady! I just think making your own patterns is a little bit intimidating for me....even with store bought patterns for this kind of project!!! I only sew very basic stuff. I really admire you for such a talent.
What a wonderful tribute to your mom. To have such a jacket to wear in her honor and for your memories/
I love that young women are sewing keeping the craft alive. Also that you are so creative and willing to experiment.
Awesome! I am 60 something and I just started to learn to sew. Thank God for you tube. It’s been a dream of mine to sew for 50 years now. I have perfect material for a coat like this. I just might give it a shot. Thank you! ❤
Your courage at stepping out into the unknown is admirable. Don’t ever be afraid to suck at something new. I believe that failure is always an option; it’s how one learns. You share your oops moments, and that’s the sign of a good teacher: others will learn from your mistakes as well as your achievements. This jacket is most definitely an achievement. As a gray-hair with more decades behind me than in front, allow me to second what another viewer wrote re: ironing. First, iron seams open, preferably on a tailor’s ham and/or wooden point press, and use a clapper to set your seam. Then turn the piece right-side-out, press and use a clapper again. You will find that your seams are as sharp as razors and - unless you toss it into the wash - they will remain sharp for the life of your jacket. To finish cut edges, consider investing in a serger; you can find many very good, rehabbed sergers at your local sewing emporium. Always buy used machinery locally before going online: it supports local merchants and has the added bonus of giving you local technical support if needed. And lastly, stabilizer inside collars and facings is always a good thing. Keep rocking, keep sewing, keep learning and keep teaching the sewists coming up behind us. ❤
Amazing and Beautiful. Your explanations and the pacing of your voice and tutorial is so Relaxing. A pattern could NEVER be that easy to understand. I also love another video of yours when you used French seams. Wish I was your age again with your imagination and simple explanations to help us all. 💕
Great job! I'm 62 and began sewing at 15! I have that exact curtain and am getting ready to make a jacket 4 the dress im making to wear to my daughter's wedding. Itwont be this fabric but in the fall yes, SEW ON LITTLE GIRL!
I love it when I’m able to find some curtains that I love and I get the bonus of them being lined. I use the lining fabric for petticoats, aprons, mock ups, etc.
Hello Sister WAC! Additionally, I’m a Vietnam Era Vet by about half a squeak. After basic at Ft. Jackson and AIT at Ft. Belvoir, I was assigned to a Pershing missile battalion in Germany. The Soviet spys were so stinkin’ obvious it was laughable😂! There aren’t terribly many of us left, so it’s good when I stumble across another WAC Vet. Good health, my friend, and keep on keeping on. ❤
I love the briliance and confidence of youth! I made my wedding dress, and my husbands wedding suit! Mine was easy, but his suit had many pockets of various sorts. It was a great learning experience, even though I put in his trouser pockets backwards! I ran out of time to change them :) It was a hoot! Your coat turned out great! Great job.
A tip for sewing through a thick spot is lengthen the stitch length just for the thick area. It gives more thread for a complete stitch through the thickness. Great job , a beautiful result.
Fantastic.....I love your ideas.......and your fabrics !!! Looking forward to more videos......
It makes me so happy to see a young person sewing so creatively. Keep it up, dear. I am 65, I’ve been sewing all my life, and I’m pretty sure it’s the thing that has kept me sane through some pretty stressful times. I wish you happiness.
You did an excellent presentation, I am impressed, I love watching this!
This is so awesome. You're an inspiration for young sewists.
Super pretty coat and really enjoyable video. Thanks!
You are did a amazing job , with to a make and sawing this beautiful coat. Thank you to share I love the coat and the fabric too congratulation🥰
well about the seam ripping --- you can imagine how much thread in my jar since am much older than you - hahaha. Haven't completed a project yet where there wasn't at least one seam ripped out. it's just part of the process. Love your enthusiasm and thought process to create your jacket. It's great you are thrifting fabrics and a wonderful choice for your project!
Oh my goodness the pocket was so cool! I love how you showed that, I may just be brave enough to attempt that. 😊 also I love that you kept the mistake in the video, so relatable 😂
Lovely result. I like the welted pockets especially, and the fabric, and the lining.
Really great job!😊 Love that curtain coat! ❤ I want to make one now... Or even a tablecloth coat - I've seen some fabulous tablecloths that would work. You're very creative and inspiring! Thanks for sharing 🥰... can't wait to see what you make next 🌹🌷🌻💕😜
Thank you! I like your table cloth idea! I’ve seen people use waterproof table cloths to make rain coats!
Unbelievable, gorgeous. I never would have thought of using drapery fabric but it is stunning.
You have reminded me of when I was teenager in the late 1970’s, I would tie dye old white sheets to make up into dresses. 😮
This is ingenious 👏
I will look differently at curtains from now on.
That 14 min mark...story of my life!😂
That is very nice!
The hand finishing makes a nice touch 😊
Nice job! Great drapes make a beautiful coat😊
Love your material, your coat looks absolutely fabulous, your very creative, I love to see young people sew. I’d do the same if I were younger 😉 but then again I can’t sew for nut, and I admire anyone who can 😂 thanks for sharing.
It's fantastic 😅
Your lovely new coat looks amazing 😊 well done, curtain fabrics are often so nice to be adapted for such a special project too 😊
Stay safe x
Haute Couture is done with much hand sewing, you did very well.
Your coat turned out beautiful!
❤love it🤩❤️
Your coat looks great! You did a nice job😊
Ps thanks for explaining how to do those kind of pockets, I think I will try to do them in a project I have planned.
You did it girl!
How CUTE!
You did a great job! Love your new coat. I have heavy furniture fabric I'd love to have turned into a coat.
I notice you didn't use any interfacing around either the shoulders, lapels or collar. Was it ever a consideration?
Absolutely beautiful , well done on making your own pattern .❤
Very cute coat! Great job!just found your channel ad subscribed. I like how yu showed your ripping part because that’s part of reality.
Truly inspiring! Excellent work!
Great job!
Beautiful coat. You are very talented
I love your glasses! And the coat (so far, 13 minutes in) looks great! I watch Janelle from rosery too! Love her clothing makes! And the pickets turned out nice... I held my breath when you cut into the fronts...lol!
Edit:. The final result is beautiful, dear! I've subscribed.
WOW I love it!!!
Lol I thrifted the same curtains not knowing what I was going to make. I love this soooo
Love the thrifting vibe 🤩
I own these very curtains! They are hanging in my family room. 😂
It's gorgeous!
Very nice job!
Great coat❤
Good job!
I've just stuffed a small pillow with my threads I've seam ripped. It's irritating, but part of every project - as long as you care enough to correct it.
Always cut two with right sides together.
❤❤❤
It turned out great, and the color looks good on you. There was a weird background noise that was a little distracting….kind of like a rhythmic “crunching” sound?
Thank you for letting me know! It’s probably my daughter sound machine! I usually sew when she is napping 😅
I have a thread jar too … 💖💖💖
Embrace your seam ripper, I’ve been sewing for 56 years. I have to rip out all the time, it’s just part of sewing.
more room....plus a coat needs to be big enough to fit over clothing.
You're doing great sewing - as someone who's done it for more than 60 years, I just want to give you one hint to get to the next level... press as you sew! You'll get an even better result, and pressing also "sets" your stitches so your beautiful coat will be even better and last longer. Congratulations on finding great fabric and being thrifty AND lovely all at once.
I was going to say the same thing. Pressing each seam before you cross it with another seam makes your stuff look bespoke.
ABSOPOSILUTELY!!! I have been sewing and upholstering for between 45 and 50 years too. The first thing that popped into my mind was ironing the seams as they were done so your work lays flat and crisp. Then watching all the small bits like the corners of the welt and the top corners being sharp. That being said…KUDOS TO YOU!!! Making an upcykled coat! It was BEAUTIFUL!!!
