  • Recently @TechnoTim did a great video on network.xyz and I though to myself is this possible with Ventoy.
    With Iventoy, you can easily boot any ISO image from the network, without the need for a Boot USB. This makes it easy to boot your computer from an ISO image, without needing to copy the ISO to a USB drive.
    This is a great way to create automated systems or boot your computer from remote locations. You can also use Iventoy to create bootable backup discs or install software from ISO images.
    Whether you're a system administrator or a software developer, Iventoy is a indispensable tool for creating and using ISO images. In this video, I'll show you how to use Iventoy

    The big green 'play' button was the thing that completely stumped me. I simply didn't notice it. I am conditioned to ignore such things on a webpage as advertisement. Thanks and greetings from India.

    Thanks. I was really spinning my wheels on the name of the boot file to use. I thought it surely must have needed to be one of the three EFI files listed in the UI and couldn't figure out why I couldn't even TFTP GET any of them from the server. For hours I went down a rabbit hole of service files, source code, directory permissions, forums, etc.. I don't know where you found the "iventoy_loader_16000" file name but that's all that was needed to PXE boot. Thanks again.

    I was following the guide on the iventoy 3rd party dhcp server page and setting the options in the unifi UI and wondering why they didn't work - apparently you just use the network boot option and it silently fails if you set them manually! Good to know.

    I keep seeing videos with this message, "no more usb sticks" and that sounds very very interesting but every single one has got either a full blown active directory with a windows dhcp server to setup the pxe or a very expensive router/firewall solution to do the same. I keep trying to work it out without slpashing out a grand on licences for propriatary software and hardware but it's just not wanting to work for me. I mean the idea that this makes it easy is kinda true assuming that you have all these other bits in place. Is it possible to get this working on a machine with proxmox and 1 network card? I don't have a fancy router or a bunch of windows servers laying around.....

    • @ExpressITTechTips
      @ExpressITTechTips  Місяць тому +1

      Yes 100% I have this working in a small Nuc type device self hosted on proxmox. You can have the inventoy run your dhcp for you and it is the pxe server 👍

      @@ExpressITTechTips Yes. It looks like it's working. Fixed IPs for the NUC and the iVentoy container. Looks like it works. Its wierd though, not all ISOs are working. When I load the ubuntu ISO the iventoy service just crashes. Will look at it eventually. My windows test on proxmox (same physical machine) actually fails. No HDD like it doesn't have the storage driver? huh? Seems impossible. I must be doing something wrong

    • @ExpressITTechTips

      If it’s windows 11 there is a known issue with the latest version there’s a few posts on the forums about it forums.ventoy.net/showthread.php?tid=2847. Would be worth setting your device mode to ahci in the bios to see if that solves it. If not people have dropped back a few versions to solve this issue

      @@ExpressITTechTips I am on proxmox using a container. Looks like if I try any customised windows iso it crashes. I need to add storage and network drivers to the windows iso. The untouched iso is perfectly fine but as soon as I add a custom one iventoy crashes immidiatly. That intel driver that is mentioned in the thread happens to be the folder I need to add to the iso along with wifi and whatever else in the future. Very strange that adding some ISOs makes the software crash. The clean windows 11 iso doesn't even have the driver for a virtual machine HDD, least in my proxmox it says that it cannot locate a drive.... Makes zero sense cause when I upload the same iso to proxmox everything is perfectly fine. I can boot to the iso, untouched or with added folders, and I can install from the ISOs. Also tried them on a stick with real hardware... no issues at all. Only iventoy works completely differently... Like it doesnt work lol. I am going to pick up a few laptops and a switch tomorrow see if I can get it working when seperated from my regular network.

    I have a problem similar to the one posted on the forum, has anyone had this happen to them and found a solution? I assume in principle that I have a problem with my router, it does not have the ipcion to configure the iventoy boot file in the router's dhcp

      Ah right to me it looks like that router doesnt have this option is it something that comes with your ISP? What I would do personally is use another device as your router something like PfSense OpenSense , Sophos XG or even Unifi gear. Here in the UK we have the challenge that our ISP provide us with some totally trash routers. You can virtualize some of them solutions as long as you have at least two nics. So for instance in my home setup my ISPs Router is in Modem mode (Bridged) on that router you have then I have my unifi dreammachine pro. Not only will you gain some more powerful features but you will be able to do lots more with your homelab. Doesnt need to cost the earth either

    • @geryescalier5242
      @geryescalier5242 10 днів тому

      @@ExpressITTechTips I understand, I very much agree with having the router in bridge mode, my ISP does not allow it, if it allows me to put my own router, I have a pair of mikrotik routers that for that part I will not have a problem and given what I have seen I will have to do it as soon as possible (I hope so).
      At the moment, if I remove the dhcp option from the router, does it still have its own dhcp? I don't think I have seen that information in the iventoy documentation.
      I was thinking that I could set up a dhcp server in my gns3 lab or on the same server that I have for the labs, without a problem, I'm not sure which is the most practical option to avoid fighting with my ISP router, temporarily
