Pepe Romero: Remembering Julian Bream

- This video is part of our online series: Remembering Julian Bream. The New York Guitar Festival invited some of our favorite artists to reflect on the life and musical legacy of the Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who died at his home in Wiltshire, England on August 14, 2020, at the age of 87.
Pepe Romero was not born with a guitar in his hands - it just seems like it. Son of the great Celedonio Romero, he has had a long solo career in addition to performing with his father and two brothers as Los Romeros. He has played for popes, princes, and presidents. And he’s a NYGF regular.
In this video, Pepe Romero performs the Preludes #3 and #4 by Heitor Villa'Lobos.
The NYGF and the performing artists are asking viewers to donate to MusiCares. Thank you for this lovely tribute to Julian. I had the pleasure of meeting him after a performance in Copenhagen one rainy evening in 1980. I approached him at his hotel and asked if he'd take a look and give his opinion on some 'first effort" original compositions I'd done. He was more than gracious. He apologized for the "poor" performance he'd given. He had a terrible head cold and all he wanted was to get some dinner and go to bed. Poor fellow, but he did take my music anyway. Two years later I received a letter from him with my originals. His words were very kind and encouraging. When I practice I think of him and his labors to bring the music to life. We miss you Julian. Thank you Pepe.
Two of my favourite pieces, and a lovely heartfelt tribute. How anyone feels the need to dislike this is utterly beyond me.
Lovely to hear a maestro reminiscing another maestro, in their hands the guitar sings, and soothes the soul...............................................
Beautifully performed. Thank you for your inspiration. I was lucky enough (or maybe old enough) to have seen Julian at an El Camino College performance when i was 20 and Segovia at 13. Between the two of them and Pepe when he plays in Long Beach, it has kept me on a strong Classical Guitar practice regimen for the past 48 years! thank you for all of your inspiration.
Beautiful tribute and playing, Pepe, and thank you for performing in Harrisburg, PA with your family a few years ago!
Listened to all tributes for 7.14. We love the Romero’s…at the Greene Space, 92nd St.Y, California. THANKS WQXR for promo reminders about NYGF. Subscribed and watching videos each day!
This is delightful, thank you for organizing this homage.
Beautiful video, many thanks, I am very much a fan of Julian and also of Pepe and have been lucky enough to have seen both of them live in concert. Kind regards. Gérard lacey in Ireland. X
God bless you Maestro

wonderful / thank you Pepe
Glad you enjoyed it
perfect choice for Julian
How beautiful this great master's playing is !
We couldn't agree more. Thank you for visiting our channel and for your comments here.
Great Pepe Romero
Fabulous.
Man, that guitar has a big voice
I heard him perform Rodrigo full size orchestra in a concert hall that was packed with close to 2000 people. No amplification yet could be heard just fine.
not only because of the guitar, but also because of his Right hand technique. His skill is extremly refined.
Beautiful performances:-) Pepe's son is becoming quite a luthier! I wonder what wood he used for the fretboard? One usually sees ebony on the more expensive guitars, but this one is lighter than any ebony fretboard I've ever seen.
Are you sure its made by his son? He usually played a Hauser or a Rodriguez. I cant tell what that is by looking at it.
@@arthurmcbride1235 Well, I can't say for sure, but Pepe cut a deal with his son that he'd help him get started under the condition that his son give every 10th (?) guitar he makes to his dad.
Yes, this is a beautiful Pepe Romero Jr guitar, i have also one built by him very similar to this. The fretboard is in rosewood .
Sería bueno que el maestro Romero hablara también en su idioma nativo para todos los que hablamos castellano !
Too much guitar for that microphone!
