Can't wait to see internet companies and their scams suffer. I feel this will change everything.
That's not going to happen. Starlink is only for areas without access to broadband internet. It's not going to be available for metropolitan areas at all. One metropolitan area can eat up the entire capacity of the entire starlink system
@@KGeee WTF. Have you been living under a rock? It's what Elon said. I guess you know more about starlink than Elon huh?
@@Bryan-Hensley I think he is talking about the other satellite internet company's with there ridiculous prices, long contracts, low speeds, and data caps! I for sure will happy to see them die! haha
@@brettbrian4539 my bad, how can you tell? Even so you can't really bash huges net, there's only so much bandwidth available from a single satellite. An average high congestion cellphone tower maxes out around 60 gbps and they have a huge spectrum of bandwidth, and that's the entire 360 degree circle, however one cellphone tower covering half of the USA would suck. It would be congested all the time. I don't know the total capacity of huges net satellite but I guarantee it's not as much as a full spectrum cellphone tower. Same with the one arguing above. there's a limited amount of radio channels that no way can carry metropolitan area via 1 or 2 satellites. Hard wire and fiber is pretty much unlimited, they just have to add more fiber to handle larger loads.
@@KGeee it probably won't. fiber can get you more than 600MB\s as a civilian.

I’ve been paying attention to Starlink for 5 years now for exactly this. It’s a lifelong dream of mine to live on a mountain a whole km away from my nearest neighbor at the least, but still be able to video chat friends/family, watch Netflix and Hulu after woodsplitting, occasionally game for an hour just to break up the days, or even run an e-commerce business. The fact it’ll be fully developed and at potential by the time I actually can do that, is incredible to me.
I was the 69th like. anyone after me will have broken the sacred oath. also I can't wait for portable starklink and also for a price drop on my region so I can kiss my scummy providers goodbye
Just gotta acknowledge how smooth the sliding of the box away was 😂
Then made up for by the oversized diagram blowing back at him.
Two things to note: 1. Right now, during the beta, it's tethered to your location. If you get too far away from your address, you can't use it (although after beta this option will be available). 2. You can't use it for games well because there are still gaps in the satellite coverage (more or less depending on your location in the country). When they launch more satellites, those gaps will disappear. Like you said though, already outstanding even as it stands!
Yep! Starlink got the go ahead for 12k in thier phase 1 deployment tgey have around 1100 now x10 as many by the next coulle years. Launching 60 Sat's per space x launch.
The 'ping' times/latency will not improve as the # of satellites improves if you're already closest to a particular satellte... Starlink themselves anticipate as they move from Beta that latency times will improve because of improvements in "networking software" and infrastructure and in certain cases if a satellite is launched that's closer. And that makes sense - the satellites are 'constant' as it were:).
@@mikemcc1156 when Elon gets Starship operational it won’t take long to populate the constellation.
@@OceanofMaya Ocean, while I believe that will eventually be true, right now, ground transceivers are sometimes being used if a particular satellite can't transfer data to another satellite. @@zakthompson6312 Its true. There is debate as to how they stay warm(I think its just the modules inside making it warm) but yes the snow does not form on it due to it being warm.

That's a unicorn shark from (cyberpunk) 2077. Wow!

Really. I only got some very ill-tempered seabass!
That would be the satellite itself
From Starlink website:
Can I travel with Starlink, or move it to a different address?
Starlink satellites are scheduled to send internet down to all users within a designated area on the ground. This designated area is referred to as a cell.
Your Starlink is assigned to a single cell. If you move your Starlink outside of its assigned cell, a satellite will not be scheduled to serve your Starlink and you will not receive internet. This is constrained by geometry and is not arbitrary geofencing.
Good to know. Thanks!
You can always change the address.
Sounds like legal mumbo jumbo. If you are able to changed the cell that your Starlink is assigned to then I wouldn't see a problem, however if they are gonna try to pull the "Oh its a one-time setup and now you have to purchase a new unit/send yours back for recalibrating" then that's just slimy imo.

That said it would be kinda cool if your out there and try it maybe 10's of miles away from where your at maybe it will work, I don't know how big the "cell " actually is??

I probably wouldn't stick it on the roof, or at least give it a long test this winter before doing that. The satellites are ~340 miles in altitude. Another 20 feet won't make any difference (barring trees, etc. in the way, of course). It has a heater for snow, but I bet you can get some pretty significant storms at your location. A lot easier to sweep snow off it in the winter time then at ground level than climbing up on the roof, if needed. I assume the angle of the dish plays a big role too. Plus I hate drilling holes in the roof! :)
Yeah, maybe like a 4 or 5 foot pole to keep it from getting buried under a drift, but that’s about as high as I’d go.
Only need to do that to give it a clear line of sight to the sky. House in the woods with no real clearing you'ld likely need to get it up high to get a good signal but where he is I don't see any reason to.
I would love to see the faces on the companies that provide internet to the marine industry
Just so you know, during the beta the dish is GPS locked to an area around your service address. Eventually you should be able to travel with it when the satellite constellation is complete.

@7:15 anyone else notice the dish wobbling around in the wind while he’s talking about it cutting out a lot? Maybe that could be one reason why it cuts out?
True, that could definitely cause it but the user would soon correlate dropouts with wind and he hasn't yet. Seems pretty dodgy tho.
I was just about to comment the same! It is very likely that it is affecting the performance. I guess it would be possible to build a "greenhouse" around the dish using thin plastic film. That would block the wind and probably not affect the signal too much...
@Charles Yuditsky I agree if fiberglass does not affect the signal. I suggested thin plastic film as it probably has minimal effect to the signal. Radar domes are quite often coated with some special fabric.
It’s phased array that won’t affect it

Do you have any cell site nearby that you can access cuz fix location cellular modems will give you 25 to 50 mb per second depending on the strength of the signal that's what I'm using on a router that supports the dual SIM modem
@@topc5826 We currently are using a cellular service plan, but the closest tower is AT&T. Around April or May AT&T decided to implement a 400Gb/month hard data cap. From what I understand they're trying to provide some free internet to low income families, which is great, but they're screwing their paying users immensely to do it. I pay over $100/month for 400Gb max. Yes, it's roughly 40-50mb down and 20 up, but with multiple game systems, macbooks, and PC's, that just doesn't cut it. The third party company we go through is sending out a Sprint SIM to see if we can pull good enough signal from their towers to use it instead, mostly because here recently AT&T decided that their 400Gb cap was too high and this month shut me off at like 25Gb. It's just been a struggle, but we NEED internet if for no other reason than for the kids to do school work and so that we can occasionally game together.
I cant attest to their arrogance, but they did say its only available to those in the northern latitudes, I believe. It is probably due to there not being enough satellites that he owns launched yet. To add more context on why its not suitable for gaming and livestream:
Online gaming and livestreaming require a constant stream of data in order to stay online or stay in the livestream. The way this internet works is it constantly switches to the closest and fastest sattelite to your location. This constant switching to different sattelites as they fly across the sky means that your internet technically drops out every time the switch happens.
This doesn't affect movies or UA-cam because those buffer a little bit ahead, so the download of the video or movie is always ahead of you. Where as a live stream you are watching live. There is no buffer.
Thank you ! As a Dish user/ customer for nearly 20 years this is great info.
Elon is a smart man, that's incredible! Thanks for the review.
This just makes me happy! I'm glad you found an internet service that works well! I hope Starlink continues to allow people to connect all around the world.
Glad it means your videos are less of a stress on you, too.
I finally got the e-mail yesterday and Starlink is now on its way to us! Can't wait to have finally fast internet.
From some things I’ve read on it building a little wind enclosure might help. Especially if you don’t want to permanently mount it and are experiencing dropping issues. Those dropping issues are also consistent with the “better than nothing” beta, and will hopefully improve.
Wait , he says 120 Mbyte, must be Mbit...
Yes but that's okay most people don't know there is a difference even though the difference is about 8x.
The biggest confusion of all time. Just assume they’re talking about the standard way internet is talked about. mbps
Those speeds are faster than my land line internet from Comcast.
Faster than my rural WISP, 40msec is the fastest, 80msec average ping.
This is a game changer to me! I live in southern Michigan where internet I great. However I own property in Northern Michigan where satellite access is SUPER expensive and NOT worth it! To have this set up I can now work towards having urban amenities in that area that I never thought I could have!
we are 40km from the internet provider but luckly the provider has a tower right next to our place
I wonder how much the price will go up after it’s totally online?
Ha, I was wondering if you were going to get it. We started using it about a week ago. So far, so good! Only a few random drops and some issues with video calling one day. But very fast and decent price compared to the other limited rural options.
They are a lot of low orbiting satellites at 12k miles up instead of 1 satellite at 30k miles up. It’s the ping is cut in half because there’s more than half the miles to get to your satellite then to your modem.
It is geolinked to your home location. You are not able to move it around or take it remotely.
