Peter's performance, especially in the latter half of the mini-series, is genuinely mind-blowing. When he was cast as the Doctor I didn't recognise the name but I knew I recognised the face, and had positive and optimistic thoughts related to it, and once I realised what I predominantly recognised him from (no, not The Thick Of It) I was even more intrigued to see his take on the Doctor than I have been before or since in relation to the casting of a new incarnation.
Shoutout to Cush Jumbo as Lois Habiba for not just being "The Martha Stand In" when Freema wasn't available. Lois is often overlooked because she's a "weaker" personality but it fills the 456 scenes with even more tension because she's scared imo.
SMITHandHARTNELL I saw Cush Jumbo on stage as Marc Anthony, she was excellent, only outshone by Harriet Walter as Brutus. Haven’t seen her on tv since (she’s been on US tv I think).

Peter Capaldi is just a phenomenon of an actor. He's so different here than he is as 12, and he's different again as Malcolm Tucker in 'The Thick Of It.' For a man with such an instantly recognizable face, he totally disappears into whatever role he's playing. Arguably the most skilled actor ever to play the Doctor.

Peter Capaldi's performance in this serial, especially from this episode on, really drilled him into my brain as someone to watch. I actively sought out things that he was in after this aired, and pinned him way up high on my list of current British actors who fascinated me. Then a few years later, we got that announcement.
Great reaction. I love the fact that you’re really invested in this storyline. And I absolutely agree that they did the build up brilliantly. It’s one of my favourite things about Children of Earth. The mystery about the 456, the eeriness when it appears and the reveal of Jack being involved in giving the kids makes for such a good set up. They’re really setting the tone and building up the tension which is great. The team dynamic with Gwen, Ianto and Rhys with Jack is also great. I love that scene with Ianto and Jack wanting to bang but Rhys’ beans prevent that from happening. I think Peter Capaldi’s acting was fantastic in this series and obviously it was a nice surprise to find out that he would become The Doctor 5 years later. :) Welp. Now begins the wait for Day 4. Oh boy.

I'd seen Capaldi in the thick of it (a political comedy by the guy that made Veep) and loved his incredibly sweary and agressive character so it was a bit odd seeing him as a government minister again, but with a lot more timid demeanor. I thought he did a good job though and was very happy when he was revealed as the doctor
I'm not going to be one of those who drops hint's and I'll leave any story related comments until you've seen the last one as well. I'll just say that I was really impressed with Peter Capaldi's acting in this. I had seen him previously in quite a few things, but at the point of seeing this, it was the most impressed I had been with him to date. Loved your reaction as always Jess.
Regarding your question about Capaldi: When I saw it, I liked the idea that, much like Gwynneth and Gwen, Frobisher might be a descendant of Caecilius. I thought his performance was fantastic. When I learned he would be The Doctor, I couldn't wait.
I watched Children of Earth for the first time 2 months before Capaldi was announced as the 12th Doctor. I saw his name on a list of potential actors who were in the running, and I immediately knew he HAD to be the next Doctor because of how amazing he was as Frobisher. He was my number one pick and the only person I could see as the Doctor. So I was completely overjoyed when we found out he had been chosen, and he went above and beyond my expectations as the Doctor (which were already very high considering I loved his performance as Frobisher). At this point in the series, I don't think I necessarily liked Frobisher, but I definitely felt bad for him. He's in a horrible position in the worst possible situation, being forced to do all the dirty work while the Prime Minister sits back pretending he has no idea what's happening.
1965... One day, you see Ian and Barbara getting home after years of travels with the Doctor... The other, you see Jack Harkness guiding a bus full of children into the claws of aliens for... _things._ Girl, you are NOT ready!
Remember the guy who killed the whole Torchwood team on New Year's eve 2000? He did it because he had a vision of THIS SEASON (among other things) and concluded that none of his team-mates were ready for the 21th century.
NEVER have the words "We are here" been creepier than this instance. Have watched Children of Earth several times, and that part always gives me chills.
Capaldi had SUCH a powerful role in children of earth....I think a lot of Capaldi supporters were pointing to this performance as a marker for what he could bring to Doctor Who....At the same time, I think detractors were pointing to it saying "he's already played two characters in-universe...blah blah blah" hahaha
The first TV series in which I really noticed Peter Capaldi was called Mr. Wakefield's Crusade (on BBC Two in 1992). I really liked Capaldi as Mr Wakefield (I enjoyed the series so much that went out and bought a copy of the novel upon which it was based). So I became a fan of Peter Capaldi back in 1992. I have not seen all of the many programmes and films or plays in which he has appeared. But I have seen a fair number of them. I enjoyed seeing his performance on stage in 'The Ladykillers.' I was delighted to hear that he was going to replace Matt Smith in the role of The Doctor. I really liked his interpretation of the role of the Doctor, and was so sorry to see him leave that role. In short I think that Peter Capaldi is a very fine character actor indeed.
You're asking about Peter's character, Frobisher, a little early. You say you won't read this until the end. I'm going to write as if it's at the end. . . . At the time, I remembered him from Fires of Pompeii, and didn't hear about the theory behind this character being connected, which I don't buy, because there was no Desmond saving his family, generation after generation, until FINALLY the family pays its dues for that saving. Anyway, it was before the 12th Doctor, and I only knew him from Lair of the White Worm, but I thought he portrayed this character well. His acting made the decision later more believable of his character. It also made me appreciate that he's an incredibly versatile actor, once his role as The Doctor arrived. I don't see this character in The Doctor, and vice versa. It also let me see just how dedicated and persistent he was as a massive fan to also take a role in Torchwood. I think the story given here is a window on how the writers see humanity. Gwen's speech sticks with me to this day, as an indictment of human's worst tendencies. It reminds me of Amy and Rory with the Silurians, and how the mom was not the best of humanity, and how The Doctor implored to the child to become the best of humanity, as a challenge. And how rare being the best of humanity feels, especially right now. This is why I say this is the darkest Whoniverse storyline. I hope you cope with next week's episode well. The ending, too. Maybe because I am a mom, and that's like such a primary foundation of my life, that is what always kills me about this story. I don't think I will ever see Jack in a good light, no matter how much redemption he may have gone through. When I later saw The Doctor set Jack up with Alonzo, I was still raw and pissed off - if the Doctor actually knew. Maybe he didn't. Anyway, I wrote this now, because that was something you asked. I hope this makes it to the end of the series and gets buried enough not to spark irritation.
Peter Capaldi was a really respected actor in the UK at the time and, in fact, his part in Children on Earth was a real contrast to his other best known role - as another senior servant in a TV show called The Thick of It. His character, Malcolm Tucker, was known as uber-aggressive monster who terrorized all the staff and even government ministers. People were tremendously excited when he was cast as not just a brilliant actor but a really passionate fan. The BBC have a compilation of his best bits from The Thick of It here, but you may want to watch the actual episodes instead: ua-cam.com/video/qjKHPv7b3fQ/v-deo.html
Saw, this morning, that John Barrowman has been rushed to hospital suffered a "severe neck injury", in a tweet, saying that it made it impossible to sing or move. We wish him well and a complete recovery. Take care, John.
Sesska is gonna need MAJOR hugs in the next 2 reactions.. Oh gods, the next two eps......Just thinking bout it..Hurts! About Capaldi's acting. You should watch "The Thick of It" with Peter as Malcolm "F'Fing Tucker" and The Musketeers with Peter as "Cardinal Richelieu"! Some really good acting from Peter in both! FUN WHO NOTE: John Frobisher is not first "Frobisher" we have seen in the Doctor Who Universe! We have seen a Frobisher (Not played by Capaldi) in the Big finish Audios. In the BF audios, Frobisher is a Shape shifting Alien companion on the Sixth Doctor, That likes to be in the for of a Penguin..Yeah...a Penguin! LOL!
If you're referring to the spoiler comment, I've deleted it, though it's rare for her to read comments of a show that she's catching up on - thanks! :)
Seeing you watch this is making me want to watch it again, even though I think I've already watched it twice in the last year. Peter Capaldi is phenomenal. The delving into relationships is appreciated so much by me; Ianto's family; Jack and Ianto's relationship; Gwen and Rhys' relationship; Jack's family; Frobisher's family; Frobisher's relationship with the Prime Minister; Frobisher's relationship with the 456; Russell T. Davies' usual boundary-pushing by showing real-world casual homophobia in otherwise likeable characters. It's a hard debate for me about whether the best story to come out of the Whoniverse is this or 'Heaven Sent' (not my favourites necessarily, but perfectly constructed stories), but it's telling that both heavily feature Peter Capaldi. I first watched this series as a preteen, before any other 'Torchwood', and before I enjoyed things that were this serious, so I didn't really like any of it that much (in answer of your question about what I thought of Peter Capaldi the first time around). It wasn't until after 'Doctor Who' Series 9 that I rewatched 'Torchwood' and at that point, I loved it. But the Twelfth Doctor isn't exactly "my Doctor" so it's not like I had as much of a bias towards Peter Capaldi as for example, you're suggesting you do.
The 456 is in my opinion the most frightening Doctor Who villain. Everything about it, you can barely see it, yet somehow it has such a majestic presence. Those horrible growls, that thrashing and vomiting which should be over the top and ridiculous, but somehow makes it all the more creepy, and worst of all that demonic voice, which sends shivers down your spine. Nothing else in the whoniverse comes close to it.
Although there are great moments to come, this is my favourite episode. We see enough of the 456 (my favourite Ferrari) that they terrify us, but they aren’t revealed, disappointingly (a common alien problem). And we also get to see what an utter tosser Jack has been, without him becoming irredeemable. Yet. All the kid stuff is incredibly well done, simple but VERY creepy.
This was a great reaction sorry I don't comment much much but I am a consistent watcher I have seen major spoilers in the comments which I reported as spam but I'm not sure if that works so if you see this before you are spoiled I would consider wanting till you finish the season to read the comments 😀
This is such a great example of what Russell T Davies brought to the table. He's so good at showing how humans can be the monster too, whether it be an individual's own nature or through choices they are forced to make. Children of Earth is my favorite season of Torchwood. I'm looking forward to your reactions to The next season as well. I know trailers aren't something that fit what you're doing, but I hope you'll consider watching some after the fact. Even now, I'll go back and rewatch just the trailers for Children of Earth. Side question. I don't want to step on toes. It shouldn't ruin anything to know this series was subtitled Children of Earth. If I want to refer to the next season (nothing story related), is the preference that I just say "series four" or are you okay knowing its subtitle?

I always found it odd that UNIT just take a back seat during this storyline. I mean, this is kind of the entire purpose of that organization. do they have no other tricks beside blowing up the planet when things get tough? (which, by the way, they totally should have suggest doing here, considering how dark things got)
I am begging you. Stop here. Everything works out and they save the day. The End. That's all you need to know. I don't even think I can watch you reacting to anything further. It might break me more than the episode itself.
Jess I am begging you stop here. I cry a lot on the next episode I don't want to see you destroyed. Think Time of Doctor mixed with Angels Take Manhattan! Stop here everyone lives happily ever after. The End
intrinsical it wouldn’t even last a full episode. For all we know, the 456 could’ve been just a couple of junkies who brought a couple chemical weapons along. These are the kind of guys the doctor would finish dealing with in a pre-titles sequence
The Doctor would end this in five minutes. He would waltz into the room no exactly what the creature is and what it wants and do the same signal thing Jack did with his screwdriver. No sacrifice needed.

I mean 12 isn't exactly a few, but very excited to see how you react to the last two episodes for Children of Earth and then Miracle Day!
LOL!
Oh sweet Jesus she is NOT ready for what is about to hit her.
Are you ready for feels? Cause here we go.
This episode is so intense; I'm loving your reactions.👍
Ianto really shine's in this story
Here we are
Sesska don’t read the comments
If you're referring to the spoiler comment, I've deleted it, though it's rare for her to read comments of a show that she's catching up on - thanks! :)
She did say towards the end of the video that she won't be reading the comments until she's finished the season which is good!
But how is she supposed to see your comment if she doesn't read the comments!
Torchwood Time!
She is going to CRRRRRRYYYYYYY at part 4, she has no idea how horrific this is going to be for her
The 456 is in my opinion the most frightening Doctor Who villain.
Jack would have been a lot lower on the totem pole in 1965; we can assume that he had to do a lot of stuff that he didn't personally agree with.
oh dear...honey u got a big storm comin
Shits about to get rrrrrrrrreeeeeeaaaaaalllllll!!!!
Fuckety Duckety indeed
Although there are great moments to come, this is my favourite episode. We see enough of the 456 (my favourite Ferrari) that they terrify us, but they aren’t revealed, disappointingly (a common alien problem). And we also get to see what an utter tosser Jack has been, without him becoming irredeemable. Yet.
All the kid stuff is incredibly well done, simple but VERY creepy.
Just a quick word for Nicholas Farrell who I thought was especially effective as the Prime Minister
It would have been great to see on screen the meeting between Twelve and Captain Jack.
This was a great reaction sorry I don't comment much much but I am a consistent watcher
I have seen major spoilers in the comments which I reported as spam but I'm not sure if that works so if you see this before you are spoiled I would consider wanting till you finish the season to read the comments 😀
She doesn't read the coments until she's done, don't worry.
It just keeps going deeper and getting darker.

What?
Here comes the emotions
They are here, next week the most treasured will fall.

RIP Headphone users...
I'm still not over the next two episodes and I watched them when they were first out all those years ago. All I can say is I'm sorry
Jess, idea of reaction for next year: The Expanse. It's the best sci-fi show of the past 20 years. I started last week and I'm so addicted to it. You will love it, I promise!
Yes, it's awesome!
Yay!
Next week she is going to lose it.
Big time!
Boy, is she ever!
Two more episodes of children of earth
Darketty dark dark all the way.
I always found it odd that UNIT just take a back seat during this storyline. I mean, this is kind of the entire purpose of that organization. do they have no other tricks beside blowing up the planet when things get tough? (which, by the way, they totally should have suggest doing here, considering how dark things got)
the next two weeks is going to be hell
Sacrifices. That's all you need to know.
You won't read it for now so I say it - I can't even imagine how deep your sorrow will be the next week and the week after
Get your tissues ready
💖
I am begging you. Stop here. Everything works out and they save the day. The End. That's all you need to know. I don't even think I can watch you reacting to anything further. It might break me more than the episode itself.
MavenCree this is excellent advice, wish I’d taken it
Yeah she's not ready for next time. No one ever is. 😢
I don't want Jess to watch the next episode
Jess I am begging you stop here. I cry a lot on the next episode I don't want to see you destroyed. Think Time of Doctor mixed with Angels Take Manhattan! Stop here everyone lives happily ever after. The End
This is alot longer than I remember... pain dragged out longer and that will only make it all the worse. Buckle up girl. Its horrible! So horrible. :(
Wish they introduce 456 monster in doctor who. I want to know how the doctor handle them...
sanjay bagde same way Jack tried to deal with them in Day Four I guess. Except he probably would’ve planned it out better
@@EditedAF987 Pretty much this. if The Doctor was here, it would end in 4 episodes instead of 5.
intrinsical it wouldn’t even last a full episode.
I both love this series and hate it. If you haven't already watched it by the time you're posting this, have tissues. LOTS of tissues.
You see, this is why I've watched this particular season only once. It's far too traumatic. Unbelievably amazing, but awful.
