How many ATC's come from the military? This is one job that hiring veterns makes a lot of sense. Its a stressful job and giving hiring preference to someone trained to do it under fire just makes sense.
As a retired veteran i totally agree. The training through the military is already paid for and qualified well above civilian standards. I may add if the military is willing to pay re-enlistment bonuses to ATC members more on the scale of our doctor bonus then the civilian sector needs to treat ATC as such. As a critical skilled and demanding job.
Many come from the military. The FAA will not hire anyone over the age of 31 unless they are already working ATC for the DOD (civilian). Most people who retire from the military are aged 38 or so, assuming they did 20 years. The FAA will not hire these retirees who have been working ATC for the military because they are over 31 years of age.
FAA I believe offers military buy back. Example: Do 12 years active duty, do 20 years FAA, having completed the necessary buy back paperwork and payments prior to retirement, and you retirement is calculated with 32 years of service which is pretty good retirement money.

When I was a firefighter, it was required to have 4 people on each truck. We only had 3. That leaves the officer and firefighter to fight fire before backup gets there. This is normal everywhere.

ASK OBAMA WHY HE SHUT DOWN SOME OF THE FAA TRAINING CENTERS. I worked at one in daytona. It was FAA/Embry riddle. It was a center for excutive leadership and management. It was one of 3 in the country. Right down the road from the condo im cleaning now. These air traffic people were 1. Telling us they would do 24 to 48 hour shifts. And 2. They partied hard. We had dorms on the campus so that means we had cleaners. My friend's told me they found cases of beer and white powder on the night stands.

Every time we have had an air accident for at least 20-years, I have heard the same old story, our air traffic controllers are over worked and understaffed. I loved Reagan but he decimated the Air Traffic Control people and then DID NOT reorganize, fix or improve the department nor did Reagan get to the problem in the control tower for these people. As I recall, the controllers VALID complaints were, STAFFING shortages, earned vacation time but nobody to cover so they could take one, no lunches or breaks due to crushing amount of air traffic, they couldn't get away from the desk, mandatory overtime, stress of too many close calls, wages weren't sufficient for the time put in and working conditions. The controllers had concerns about safety but were ignored by management. Reagan dropped the ball.
Everyone needs to look at the crash of N661TC. Nobody was ever held accountable. Four people died because maintenance failed to do thorough, wiring and hydraulic line inspections which led to an fire underneath the floorboards minutes after takeoff.
My hats off to those who are controllers. They have to be very knowledgeable, with confidence, and have to be able to work under extreme stress. I worked around them for 25 years and I know that I couldn't do it! This takes a certain kind of person to be able to do it. These positions are not going to be able to be filled easily or quickly.
Increase the mandatory retirement age to 60 or even 65. It is a shame if veterans are retired early because they have so much experience under their belt. Their skill and competence can compensate for their age. Let them fill the vacancies until new hires can come online.

When presented with a solid plan for development, they don't ask, "What will it cost?" they ask, "How cheaply can we do this?" So you end up with businesses that fail, bridges that fall down, roads that develop potholes within months and an education system that produces ill-educated citizens, the dumbest in the developed world... verifiable FACT.

Air traffic controllers earn anywhere from a low of 80K a year to a high of 200K, averages about 140K, Depending on location and how busy an air space is and tenure as well as progressive training but they earn a good living. Wondering why more people do not choose that as a career path? A young person say in their 20's can attain certification and have a really good earning potential as well as stability, they can find jobs just about anywhere.
NOTAMs needed an overhaul 30 years ago. Professional pilots have been screaming this without action by the FAA for a very long time. Mandatory retirement age needs to be modified for pilots and ATC Specialists (and maybe politicians!) regardless of what the unions want.
You can't talk about lack of controllers without talking about increased pay and benefits. Yet right now we have a lot of politicians pushing for cuts in civil service, cuts in benefits, cuts in pay. Give it a couple of months and the same politicians praising first responder and controllers, and a host of other fields, will be calling them "overpaid and underworked."

The FAA has been resisting spending the funds raised through a special tax on aviation fuels to pay for a new, update automation system in ATC for years. The last time I saw a total for the revenue collected it was ESTIMATED to be $60 BILLION.

When I was a firefighter, it was required to have 4 people on each truck. We only had 3. That leaves the officer and firefighter to fight fire before backup gets there. This is normal everywhere.

ASK OBAMA WHY HE SHUT DOWN SOME OF THE FAA TRAINING CENTERS. I worked at one in daytona. It was FAA/Embry riddle. It was a center for excutive leadership and management. It was one of 3 in the country. Right down the road from the condo im cleaning now. These air traffic people were 1. Telling us they would do 24 to 48 hour shifts. And 2. They partied hard. We had dorms on the campus so that means we had cleaners. My friend's told me they found cases of beer and white powder on the night stands.

The age restriction blows my mind. I was a Rail Traffic Controller for years and quite confident that I would be a successful Air Traffic Controller but can't sign on because the FAA deem me too old.

Every time we have had an air accident for at least 20-years, I have heard the same old story, our air traffic controllers are over worked and understaffed. Why is this the same excuse over and over again? When will this excuse finally stop? How more incident lives have to be lost until someone is held accountable??

I loved Reagan but he decimated the Air Traffic Control people and then DID NOT reorganize, fix or improve the department nor did Reagan get to the problem in the control tower for these people. As I recall, the controllers VALID complaints were,
STAFFING shortages, earned vacation time but nobody to cover so they could take one, no lunches or breaks due to crushing amount of air traffic, they couldn't get away from the desk, mandatory overtime, stress of too many close calls, wages weren't sufficient for the time put in and working conditions. The controllers had concerns about safety but were ignored by management. Reagan dropped the ball.
30+ years and nobody has fixed since then is just poor management . Night training not a good idea until after airlines close

Everyone needs to look at the crash of N661TC. Nobody was ever held accountable. Four people died because maintenance failed to do thorough, wiring and hydraulic line inspections which led to an fire underneath the floorboards minutes after takeoff.

My hats off to those who are controllers. They have to be very knowledgeable, with confidence, and have to be able to work under extreme stress. I worked around them for 25 years and I know that I couldn't do it! This takes a certain kind of person to be able to do it.
These positions are not going to be able to be filled easily or quickly.
They charge an arm and a leg for airfare taxes. There is no excuse for this. Get it done. Use airforce people if you can’t figure it out.

Air traffic controllers earn anywhere from a low of 80K a year to a high of 200K, averages about 140K, Depending on location and how busy an air space is and tenure as well as progressive training but they earn a good living. Wondering why more people do not choose that as a career path? A young person say in their 20's can attain certification and have a really good earning potential as well as stability, they can find jobs just about anywhere.

The FAA has been resisting spending the funds raised through a special tax on aviation fuels to pay for a new, update automation system in ATC for years. The last time I saw a total for the revenue collected it was ESTIMATED to be $60 BILLION.
