This color educational film is an episode of the 'True Adventure' series that features a religious community in Kentucky that performs ecstatic demonstrations of belief with snakes - a so-called "serpent cult". Copyright circa the early 1960s. Snake handling, also called serpent handling, as shown in the show is a religious rite observed in a small number of isolated churches, mostly in the United States. Participants are typically part of the Holiness, Pentecostals, Charismatics, or other evangelical movements. At least one of the persons shown in the film, serpent handler Lee Valentine, died from snake venom. The practice of snake handling is still exercised in the USA, although some of the most controversial practices, such as drinking snake venom, have been abandoned. (In Kentucky at least, snake handling is now forbidden and subject to fines.)

Cult members dance, clap, play the guitar (6:10). A man plays with fire (7:17). A man holds a flame against his skin (7:41). A man holds a blowtorch (8:01). Men talk with one another (8:51). Members of the cult dance and prepare for the snakes (9:33). The girl in the trance wanders (10:00). Poisonous snakes are removed in crates from a station wagon (10:42). Snakes in crates are carried over (11:00). Snakes are removed from the crates (11:24). A man raises a snake (11:34). A man places snakes on his head (11:47). People pass snakes around and place them on their bodies (11:56). People sway as other hold snakes (12:34). People wrap snakes around their necks (13:15). Snakes are held in the hands of the worshippers (14:00). A man opens a rattlesnake's mouth (14:25). A woman convulses while holding a snake (14:30). Crowd move and dance as people hold the snakes (15:00). People bow before the snakes and those in control of the ceremony (15:28). A man blesses a little girl (16:01). Children dance (16:28). People watch and clap (16:44). A man holds poisonous snakes close to his face (16:56). People transfer snakes from one person to another (17:19). A snake is removed from a box (17:53). Men raise snakes up high (18:04). Worshippers shake as they hold snakes, in a trance doing a dance (18:28). A man who is bitten is lead away; late he dies from the snake bite (18:53). Children hold snakes (19:18). People continue to pass the snakes to one another (19:46). A woman does a bizarre dance (20:15). The police have shown up; having these snakes is illegal and dangerous (20:31). Men of the cult preach on (20:45). Police confiscate the snakes (21:01). The police start to arrest devotees (21:31). Police get into their vehicles (22:03). Snake worshippers leave (22:25). End credits (22:38).

Christians who handle venomous snakes are incorrect in their interpretation of Mark 16:18. That verse does not command or suggest that we literally handle venomous snakes! It is a metaphor of God's divine protection in the context of danger. These snake handling Christians are wrong and do not understand exegesis or God's word.

You could say that it's a type of a Death Cult! The followers of this Cult themselves, don't know if they're going to leave their Cult Center alive!
I know that we're all mortal, and that we could end up on a Mortician's Slab, before the day is out. Death could come for us this very afternoon. Only God knows our time. However, these people seem to either want to prove their "Faith" to God...or, maybe in some cases, they just want to "Speed up the time of their demise!!!

This video is excellent as to the video portion BUT you have not captured any of the audio that occurred at this meeting. You have to HEAR what is being said in order to fully understand the experience being felt by those in attendance. Your overlay by the running commentary is good but it can never make up for the loss of hearing the actual sounds of the scene. You try to describe the activity leading UP to the point of the snake handling and say rather lamely that it is an "emotional" preparation for the main event. What actually is occurring is FAR beyond your description; this period of intense singing, hand clapping, dancing around, speaking in tongues, etc. is producing a hypnotic trance state in those who are involved in this part of the service. Why is this important? It is VERY important in the following way: from experience, these people KNOW that an altered state of consciousness MUST be attained before any would dare pick up a snake. Of course, they do not use those terms.....rather, they say the holy ghost (Spirit of God) has come upon them. They also know that anyone who has not done this preparation is NOT protected from being bitten by the snake. At this point in time, psychology cannot explain why this altered state of consciousness would be protection from being bitten even though studies have been done along these lines.
He said he wouldn't speak against their religion. However he didn't do anything but mock and talk down about them. And ninty nine percent of what he said was untrue.he clearly did not have a clue what he was seeing nor have any understanding of it.

The Crate Snake is a super-venomous Viper, for which there is no anti-venom. People may have up to a day to live, if envenomated by one of these deadly buggers. That's one full day, to make everything right, between you and God! After that, from what I hear-NOPE! You're done for.

The video footage is enjoyable to watch but the commentary is hard to listen to. It’s like this guy is pushing his own propaganda with how he’s describing these people & their beliefs saying they aren’t in their right mind. Says who? I’d say what he calls a trance is more being drunk in the Holy Spirit. It’s hard for me to listen to this commentary & I ain’t even half way thru yet. His opinions are attacking others opinions.

At least one of those people died from snake venom. Being "drunk in the Holy Spirit" sounds a lot like not being in the right mind. I don't know how anyone can look at these people and not agree they've lost their bearings.

When Jesus said what he did about taking up Serpents, he wasn't talking about handling deadly vipers on purpose. No. Rather, he was talking about taking on the power of the Devil, and defeating it, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Same thing with Fire-Handling and Poison Drinking. He wasn't telling you and I to do that stuff on purpose. He was telling us, that if we were accidentally burned or ingested something poisonous unintentionally, that we wouldn't be harmed.

I agree but for all the venomous snake handling, strychnine drinking and holding blowtorch flames to themselves, the casualty and fatality rate amongst them is way, way lower than what it should be. Yes, what they are doing is folly and a gross misapplication of Mark 16:17-18 but no doubt that supernatural protection to a large extent is brought to bear. It could be argued that this is the work of deceiving spirits but I would attribute it more to God's Providential preservation in response to the sincere faith of these Hillbilly folk. They are of the same Scots-Irish blood as myself and I dig big style the music in their services. That is a wider Appalachian cultural thing all the same and by no means peculiar to nor the preserve of the pentecostal snake handlers. Yes, I do cut them a lot of slack I suppose.
