- Incredibly rare and in-depth interview with Ben 'The Rebel' Wallers, along with clips of his live set at Bristol's Exchange.
Alastair Shuttleworth's two-part feature on Ben Wallers, 'Spakenkreuz', features one of only two video interviews Wallers has ever done in his 30 year career, having also been a member of The Country Teasers, The Male Nurse and other bands. A bona-fidé musical genius of our time, (credited by bands such as The Fat White Family as a key inspiration) and a daring, bold and hilarious satirist.
In Part One, Ben talks about satire, William Burroughs, how he writes his lyrics, and performs (and explains the stories behind) songs such as 'David I Hope You Don't Mind' and 'Riding In The Sun'.
Incredible interview, I've never seen this guy talking about his work, its an amazing insight. I've been a fan for so long and never expected such a bitter and evil character to actually be a really nice and humble guy. You've captured something rare and done so very sweetly. Fantastic video.
Thank you so much for this. This interview is so well done. A real historical document.
I love this interview so much

@@UBTV I have now enjoyed naked lunch and am asking santa for soft machine!
Cant make out the name of the band he mentions in the "David I Hope You Dont Mind" bit. Anyone else?
Datblygu, from Wales. He recommended their album 'Pyst' if you're interested, well worth checking out!
datblygu, welsh band
get a translation of the lyrics if you don't speak Welsh
His voice sounds a lot like Douglas P.
Yes it's datblygu and country teasers / the rebel have covered some songs live before
Interesting Tony Wilson impersonation.
I was at that gig. He was far more interesting than Neil Hagerty.
likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
it's always a bit disappointing when someone as interesting and underground cites the same influences as everyone else - Burroughs and Flann O'Brien. I mean they are great and they probably are his great influences, it's just there's got to be more out there
All to their own I guess 🤷🏽♂️ who influences you?
lol Who else cites Flann O'Brien?
Maybe that's a credit to his originality?
he's cited The Fall too, they're quite popular. i can hear their influence in his vocal style
