His playing with John was one of the first to really turn me onto bass. I love his calm dignified state of being while tearing it up
Good to see some slap with different harmony than e-minor pentatonic octaves. The tone is pretty sweet, too.
Kai Eckhardt, Tony Levin, Jim Kale, John Einwistle y Mel Schacher son lejos los mejores bajistas de la historia del Rock
Such a great bassist, used to play withJohn Mclaughlin
One of the best basses and one of the best players!
It is not about the bass,it is the bass player, thanks Kai
Wow ! That man didn't even sweat during this solo ! It looks like it's effortless for him !
Jakub Baranowski ive worked with him he’s incredible. Once he said he learned bass like a painter masters painting. Studying everything possible and mastering it all, so he can have it all at his disposal with zero effort to recall it.
Some very nice tones, melodies, and passages in here. This man is having fun and enjoying many of the different colors and nuances of the instrument. I like his playing!
Kai ,
How do you do that you just amazing and what a nice person you are you're just an impeccable musician and I am still practicing the lick you showed me in 1984
this made me pick up my bass and go practice. Seriously.
Thank you for sharing!
and he is about the nicest guy in the world. Unaffected by his extraordinary talent. He teaches here in Oakland. I have taken lessons from Kai. Really interesting and musical exercises.
Kay you are very very great, fantastic.....
That was insanely good! Holy moly, you rock. I am inspired to keep practicing, albeit a little intimidated now I've seen how far I have to go! :-/
Enjoyed the "Giant Steps" lines thrown in there.
bro that's effortless
This is exactly what the kids wish they sound like every time I walk into guitar center...
I am way more impressed than I thought I'd be o_o
The only man in the world who doesn’t make crazy faces when he slaps
Like letterman would tell: oh my goodness
Kai: thumbs up
You delivered a veritable mix of traditional Motown fat belly splitcoil Precision sound and something more "edgy", dunno if from Warwick's 4x8" right beside you
Not to mention the incredible fast pace of it all
I'm blown away
Cheers,
Claudio
Great !!
very nice man
Go Kai!
He has the right idea -- slap melodic things instead of just wherever it's easy to put your left hand.
As an infinite solo, it's kinda short.
Kai, you are an artist of the highest level, taking this ancient African art to the sky...
Is there a Kai Eckhardt Slap Technique book / video somewhere?
Heeey! That's the guy from Mahavishnu Band
maestro
Would love to hear more about the bass itself. Could you make such a video, or is it not possible?
***** Kai is living on the other side of the planet, so we don't meet that often... What do you want to know? It's a modified 61 P-Bass with additional singlecoil and badass bridge, I guess the finish was stripped down too
BassTheWorld.com Kai got this bass as a present from a friend. He just contacted him to find more about the pickups, etc. No success... The only thing he knows for sure is that it's a 61 P-Bass.
BassTheWorld.com The headstock "Precision" logo is definitely from the 70's...
That is some vintage pickup placement of the J, that thing is trying to become part of the bridge
nice work
Just Impossible dislike this !!
What pickups he was using?
like to hear more
his tone is all meat
The 103 people who didn't like this have their heads in their asses.
Do you have any information about that bass? It has a really unique sound for a PJ.
shako9876 exactly my thought... ...sounds "active" or "emg-like". would be interesting to know the pickups/preamp(yes/no)/etc...
benchinho I'm sure a lot of it is in the man's fingers, but the bass itself sounds immense. It has more "P" characteristics in the tone, but towards the end with the chordal part, you can hear that it's much more articulate than an old P bass normally is, so the Jazz pickup is definitely doing something without affecting the tone too much. I don't think it has an active preamp, but it's very clear and open sounding like a set of EMG pickups would be. I don't think they're EMGs, though. I'm really curious as to what's actually in there.
+BassTheWorld.com I would also be interested to know! Also, is the jazz pickup closer to the neck than in other P/Js? That could be one of the factors in this tone.
Great video!
tá loco
this guy doesn't look very concerned
Look at the size of his hands. He makes the bass look tiny
Solo massante
ATH-M50x's for the win
9:32 of slapping.. it does seem infinite.. at least you can enjoy the bass tone and looks.
WHAT IS THE TOP IN THIS BASS.I WANT IT IN MY LIFE
LifeSon777 Its not a top, but it looks like a light colored and treated rosewood
Tweaty14 Rosewood???I was gonna say really really tight grained ash but this looks like no kind of rosewood that I've seen. Also rosewood isn't used as body material in electric instruments.....so again wtf is this wood???Also in his site it states that this is a vintage bass.....it looks refinished and clean!
LifeSon777 Do you even want to know? you dismiss every fucking suggestion i have.
This guy is like the thomas pridgen of the bass.
I think I might have to kick my roommate out of the house because it turns out he is a HUGE bassist. He doesn't play the instrument, but he really hates guys who do. (thank you ladies and gentlemen, I'm here all week)
Nice bass! Too many notes.
ざんねん
I can see all the fingerprints on the screen of your mac
The bridge on this bass looks like he just slapped a giant plate if steel on.
Obama?
Disliked. Wasn't infinite.
Towern You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. You should have played it again. etc.
:-)
きほんがなってない
i dont like the way he play although he is great player
Sounds like a mess
He is just an amateur
He has played with some of the greatest in the world and is a highly regarded bassist. If that's an amateur then I hope to be called an amateur one day. ;)
It was good but FAST = GOOD. The intro had terrible timing and tone.
Really? Let's see you put up a video showing us how much better you are.
Rory McCallum this idea of needing to be better at something before giving negative criticism desperately needs to die. If a popular artist releases a song and I dislike it, should I need to go out and release something better before I can share my opinion on it? In the end, it's up to the listener to decide if they like it or not and the listener won't always be a musical person. Does that mean the listener can't have an opinion?
DaveSwag put up a video of yourself doing it better, or shut the fuck up princess. I dont want to hear your shit. Put up or shut up.
Rory McCallum LOL! The whiny pussy admits he's wrong! Now stop fanwanking. Musicians want their music to reach as large of an audiance as they can. And if it only reaches top- notch professionals, he's failed as a musician.
Your narrow outlook on the matter is nothing short of embarrassing. Maybe a Grade 6 social studies course would help you out.
DaveSwag you say he's failed? You're not qualified to say he's failed. You can't play what he can play and you can't do it better then him and you dont have the experience or the wisdom to come to such conclusions.
Firstly, the man is an amazing musician who has reached the audience of millions. He is already an established musician who has a video up.
So let's compare him to you.
You, live with you mommy using her wifi and her computer.
You, can't play an instrument and you've done nothing with your life except assume your opinion has meaning and your words hold value when none of the above is true.
Stop wondering why your a cry baby with no songs written and no skills on an instrument when the truth is you live at home getting your pajamas folded by your mommy.
You have absolutely nothing to show for your life except a big mouth, no qualifications and no skills on anything except putting skilled musicians down because you're the master of nothing.
I know a young kid who just got off his tour that made thousands of dollars and played places so famous it would make you cry and he's great because he is qualified and is a monster craftsman on his instrument because he shuts his mouth and plays for hours while you practice your mouth while getting your lunch made by mommy.
Your words mean nothing and youre not qualified to speak about a person's musicianship when you dont have any. You got that Princess. Now either show us how much better you are by posting videos of yourself or simply shut the fuck up, junior
Meh...and it bothers me much when folks add J pick ups to a P bass. Just stop.
Just horrible.
Hmmm, in my opinion it lacks a bit of feeling - sounds like a tech exercise to me. Sorry.
that might be the best looking p/j bass i've ever seen. ever
Darrien Day Sure, but was it the best looking bass you've seen EVER?
Bobrovsky IS ON THE CASE If it was, he would've said so...
It is the best looking P/J I've ever seen! Kai rocks!
That PJ is badass... look how close the jazz p/up is to the bridge
