@skylinerunner1695 very generous with actors. A few years later, I got a two day acting job on the Majestic. I ran into Frank on a break in the men's room of the Chinese theater in Hollywood. Two years later, I ran into Frank on a street corner in Carmel, CA. What were the chances?
@@PeteGeorge That's nice to hear. I liked his adaptation of The Mist, too, although not the new ending he changed from the novella. Great to hear you were also in The Majestic. Seems you're often in the right place at the right time. Good stuff.
This gentleman is so emblematic of old school 20th Century class and dignity. And to think we took guys like these for granted. Sure could use more like him today.
Whitmore was a wonderful actor who blessed us with many memorable performances. I recently rewatched his superb depiction of the leader of a colony on Season 4 of The Twilight Zone. He is deeply missed! Rest in Peace, Mr. Whitmore!
This chap lived a pretty full life; a Marine who served in WWII, a survivor of four marriages, a dad to four children, a passionate gardner, and a sterling career as an Oscar nominated character actor., and by all accounts, a thoroughly kind person. A great run cut short by lung cancer.
@@fullario He was about the same age of my grandfather, at 87 somethings got to kill you, technically they both died of lung cancer after 75 years of pipe and cigar smoking. We didn't even bother telling my gramps, he thought he had a chest cold he couldn't quite shake. He lived about a month after the LC diagnosis.
I honestly only know him from Shawshank, but you could see how magnificent an actor he was just from the rich and deep performance he gave there as Brooks. Rest in peace, Mr. Whitmore. Your legacy binds entire generations together and it won't be forgotten.
He is also very good in "The Majestic" with Jim Carrey. The film was also directed by Darabont (Shawshank). It's a great film, and worth watching, but also features a great Whitmore performance. It's also one of the only Jim Carrey serious films he's done. Let me know what you think if you decide to take a look!
Whitmore did a 1 man show, "Give'm Hell Harry" in which he impersonates Harry Truman. Should be easy to locate online. I've never heard any scandal or ill words spoken about Whitmore. Just a humble, straightforward guy who always stayed engaged in his craft.
Watch him in the sci-fi great "Them!" (1954). A surprisingly well done movie for that era. Played on the nuclear bomb fear while being surprisingly scientific. Also has a 'cameo' from a very young Leonard Nimoy.
I had the fortune of working with & sitting around chatting with Mr Whitmore, Morgan Frank, the whole cast, & I knew then it was as monumental a movie every day while we were shooting.
James Whitmore always came across as such a dynamic performer. Lots of range and very bright...and those eyebrows....like caterpillars crawling across his brow. He has a mellow voice box...sort of like Morgan or James Earl. I miss his performance...."Them".."Black like me"..and the great Twilight Zone episode. Every award he earned and deserved.....RIP.
One of my favorite actors, THEM!!! Remember him and James Arness, The one man show Will Rogers, classic. Battleground, sgt kinney . Great Range of skills.
I've worked in a state prison for many years. Of all the films with a prison setting, SHAWSHANK REMDEMPTION comes the closest to reality to what its like. Most others, like THE LONGEST YARD, are way off fantasies and total bs. Whitmore was a top notch actor who really nailed his role on that film.
Do you recognise the maker? I was thinking a rusticated dunhill with the uneven bowl rim but the silver band threw me off the scent, I'd be interested to know just which pipe it actually is.
@@Blkjk6977 I never got your comment. I came back here and saw it. The pipe is definitely not a Dunhill. I look at the stem and it’s not. It looks like a Savinelli.
@vintagepipesnightmares welcome back sir! thankyou for your reply I never did solve the riddle however looking at it a second time around I'm leaning towards peterson I'll get there one day! 😂 hope your well, and welcome back!
The most impressive talent of this actor is his ability to speak for more than five minutes while holding a heavy pipe between his teeth. Try it out: not easy. Ordinary mortals feel that their teeth are coming loose.

I acted in Shawshank for two months the summer of 93. Mr. Whitmore would talk to anyone on set for hours. Class act. ❤
That must’ve been incredible. Creating the what would become the most iconic film of all time as far as I’m concerned.
@@ultragroove1 I have a metal tray and tin cup from the mess hall scenes.

He said , " I am 72 years old and I'm still 22 or maybe even younger " , what a selfconfidence !!!! RIP James !!!!
He was 72 in this interview? EDIT: Never mind-I just saw the portion of the interview where he mentions his age [72].

Made me really ugly cry in Shawshank. RIP James💞
why do people keep writing R.I.P its just a fucking film for god sake
Gencturk92 Because he died in real life.
That was such a sad part he played..but did such a great job!🥰

Cut short? The man was 87 when he died.
@@fullario Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman are in their 90's, and Kirk Douglas reached 103. I'm sure Whitmore would have liked more time.

Here after watching Shawshank again after a few years 😔
James had a magnificent voice and some great lines in movies 🎬
Boy I'd like to see the entire interview.
I wonder if James knew at the time he was making an all time classic that would be appreciated for generations?
I'm distracted by the match burning down to his fingers while he's trying too answer a question.
Brooks was here
Brooks was here forever.❤
i visited Alcatraz and felt very much the presence of the past inmates. it was palpable even in a guided tour years after.
How lovely. Far from a gentleman player who frets in his hour upon the stage. Why is this wisdom not obvious to the garish.
What a great Man and Actor. Respect

Wonderful and much underrated actor.

Loved him in the animation movie "Up!"

It's silly, but I was disappointed that neither James Whitmore's nor James Arness' obit mentioned that they had "saved the world" in "Them!".
