In this Grasshopper Architecture tutorial, we will demonstrate the beauty of combining mathematics with geometry which is exactly what Santiago Calatrava is known for. We're going to create Calatrava's Train Station in Reggio Emilia, Italy by using a mathematical approach in architectural design.
First, we will create a sine wave (sinusoid) - a mathematical curve that describes a smooth periodic oscillation. You will learn how to adjust its amplitude and periods using Grasshopper only. Based on a sine curve we will design our geometry that could be modified with additional sliders that define its width and height.
Since the final frames that define the whole shape should have a horizontal bottom edge, we will use the Pufferfish plug-in that allows us to easily split brep with planes (horizontal).
No matter how complex the building looks, this grasshopper tutorial will demonstrate how you can separate its design phases into simple steps and how you can apply a mathematical approach with Grasshopper which would allow you to create sculptural buildings on your own.
Feel free to let us know in the comments below the video which project you want to see in one of our upcoming tutorials.

Glad you liked it!
I love it! :)
Thank you Sofija! 😎
Excellent tutorial. Congratulations.
Many thanks!
amazing tutorials overall!
I would like to see some parametric lamp designs, where grasshopper can make some 3D printable objecs. Different thickness for light effects, etc!
Thanks Nils! We are trying to create more architecture-related tutorials, but once in a while, we make something different, so we can consider your suggestion. For the gift please email me at lazar@howtorhino.com
Great tutorial! Really liked the level of detail you paid attention to with the trimming of the bottom edges to flatten them. Would like to see a tutorial on facades like the Revolving Bricks Serai!
Thank you, Alvin! Great suggestion! You can definitely expect this project in one of our following tutorials. Feel free to send me an email at lazar@howtorhino.com for the gift
I'm also a beginner and I am planning to use grasshopper with archicad and i found your videos they are really helpful. Thank you for your videos
You are very welcome Furkan! Thanks for your comment!

Hey friends! Great project! I was searching for this specific tutorial, once I tried to model it in rhino and it was a complete mess, if you see my definitions you will probably laugh hahaha
Hey Juan! Thank you! Don't worry, we all have the same beginnings with messy models :) Hope you will master Rhino and Grasshopper skills one day with our tutorials 😎
