I really like the wall mountable magnetic knife holders. Cheap, sturdy, out of the way and safe.
Yeah, these work very well for me. Knife blocks are a pain.
Of course, if you have good place to put them.
I am surprised there were no comments about the knife blocks which are straight up and down where you slide the knifes in and out? Most knife blocks are set back under kitchen cabinets. With the ones that go straight up and down, you cannot get the knifes out of the slots as your hand hit the bottom of the cabinet before the knife can completely slide out. I had one like that.....drove me nuts. I had to keep pulling it out and pushing it back under the cabinets.
I'll stick to my conventional wooden block - holds more knives, all safely, and angled for easier accessibility.
240$ for a knife block. Are you insane?!?
Not insane, but severely out of touch. They need to do more than just pay quick lip service to the whole idea of Best Buy.
"240$ for a knife block. Are you insane?!?"
"They need to do more than just pay quick lip service to the whole idea of Best Buy."
The title of the video isn't "Most practical knife blocks" or "Most affordable knife blocks," it's "Best knife blocks." However the Schmidt Brothers Midtown Block, at less than $70, is indeed a "Best Buy" compared to the $240 (currently $299 on Amazon) winner.
Not that much when you own 3-4-5 hundred dollar knives. $240 to protect a few thousand dollars worth of knives is not out of the question by any means.
All the knives ATK recommends cost less than the block combined 😂
1960's public school woodworking class. Price: a small fraction of your taxes and you get to gush over your kid's accomplishment (which only took 8 weeks)
Funny how they called out safety early on in the video and then chose the carousel of death as their top choice. Obviously child safety wasnt even remotely considered in this choice: kids will be drawn to the fun spinny shiny toy, and there's no guard whatsoever.
OMG, yes, you are too funny. Love your response!
Looks like your winner also has flaws, sharp edges stick out on top just like the first one that y'all critiqued. I say a big round clay crock, maybe 2 gallon.
This is actually the first time I don’t agree with the choice. I have the cheaper slotted acrylic model and love it. It’s easy to clean and you can clearly see the knives.
Couldn’t you just remove the plastic sides on the best buy one to make it function similar to the winner
That's Exactly what I'm gonna do.
Thanks for the video. They are always helpful.
Too expensive and not impressed. Will stick with my traditional knife blocks. Than you very much.
Yes, I prefer my traditional knife block. I place my paring knives sharp side UP to prevent the blade from dulling from resting in it's slot. I'm not sure about this, but have read that magnetic knife holders alter the blade's sharpness.
@@danbev8542 that's not true at all
A good set of knives with a good block can be easily had for $200-$300. Hat said, a block and a few favorite knives out of that is miles ahead of a $250 block. Also I do not see how you condemn one for exposed blades yet the $250 winner could easily be considered an exposed blender for the fingers of curious and playful children. Love the channel, not the best equipment review though.
$200+ knife block or eat? I'm gonna choose eat.
Love this! I bulit my own set over three years and it's so much better than having bought a set
Love these equipment reviews. When does a new season start?
I've got the quarter circle one they complained was too strongly magnetic. You just slide the knives off, there's no need to pull them away from the magnets. (Taking them off that way is also a much more natural motion). It also holds ten knives, unlike the winner which only held six.
My only issue with it has been that the magnet placement means longer knives don't always balance quite right on some of the spots. Otherwise it's a great block - heavy, stable and very attractive.
I didn’t know knife blocks needed to be cleaned. How do you clean them?
finally some reviews just about the knife blocks!
I think having a nice lined kitchen drawer with a felt lining and utensil type dividers. So each individual knife could set flat separate from each other possibly might be a nice idea for storing knives.
It would be nice to see a comparison video showing slotted blocks, putting emphasis on slot depth and slot width for fitting an array of the most commonly used types of knifes.
I had this problem while looking for the right knife block online as most didn’t describe what length of knifes it could fully hold and what shapes of knifes it could hold.
Love it
I just with you had put an link to the winners? Thanks for taking the guesswork out for us.
YIKES! The blades are up against the block on one side but still fully exposed. Not child safe or pet safe.
They are all just knife blocks, none of them are child safe. If they could cut themselves on a knife stuck to a magnetic block, they could remove one from any of them, except maybe that one.
What a ripoff.
Exposed blade not mentioned on the winner, but a criticism on other blocks... Pffft
Noooooo, I've been using Norpro magnetic knife bars for years and have bought some as gifts. A 24" one of those bars will hold about as much as that behemoth, if not more and won't take up any of my valuable countertop real estate for only $25. (Edit; More reasons the bar is a better solution; all tools are visible, you're less likely to knock a knife off by bumping the handle and it looks sharper😎/smarter)
Once you've use bars, blocks just don't make sense at all.
The 360 Knife block allows the upper part of long knives to be exposed. Why is this deemed safe and the winner but the plastic one was declared unsafe for the same reason?
Can you all do a showcase of the best home deep fryers to buy?
Absolutely ridiculous! For that kind of money you can get the knives and the block that was meant to go with them. Turn the blades up when putting them away so they don't cut into the wood and the block will last a really long time.
Face the blades up?!!! You, Mr. Malone are my Einstein. Just did that and me and my knives thank you!
I use a noodle I can put in any knife any shape.easy to lift in and out.
End of summer repeat.... I must have just watched this 2 - 4 months ago. OH well, what can you say.... it's "free", right?
I need a review of knife block that win due to great knifes set !!!
Buy your knives separately so you get the best knife for each task (which may not be all the same brand), and only the knives you really need. Then get an empty knife block to put them in.
The winning knife block isn’t tall enough for the bread knife not to stick up and easily cut you, much like they complained about on another.
$300 for the knife holder...? It's insane!
$350 now. For that price, it better cut my food for me too.
$360 now. And the black color is $440. What the…
How about testing wall mounted knife holder? That would be useful....
How does that “winning” turntable block not have safety issues? And capacity issues.
I love my Bodum bristle knife holder which cost me 1/2 of your "runner up." It is safe and I don't like the esthetics of visible blades, a bit visually disturbing. Not swayed by the Trifecta rotating wood holder!
Liked my Bodum too, until it split lengthwise on the short side. Still using it but too short for ATK's recommended bread knife. Have to tuck it in the back with the damn sharp scallop edge facing the wall. Painful lesson learned.
For nearly $250, that block should sharpen my knives automatically
And do all the chopping, trimming, slicing, etc. Then wash itself and put away.
Functional Art
The winning knife block leaves longer knifes exposed on the top.
Only extra long knifes that would be exposed in any knife block. You can see that it has plenty of space with an 8 inch chefs knife. I guess 9 or even 10 inch would still be ok. The knife that sticks out seems to be an 11 inch slicing knife, which is difficult to get in any knife block. For such long knifes magnetic knife bars or drawers are the only real alternatives.
Do an episode on rolling pins
What about the other ones that weren’t discussed? Why have them out there?
I swore I saw this exact video a couple months ago.
You probably did. Do you watch the show on PBS? If so you might have seen this as a segment of a full episode. Or, if you subscribe to the Web site, you might have seen this while perusing equipment tests.
I don't like knife blocks. They take up valuable counter space. I follow Julia Child's lead; she had many of her most-used knives stored on magnetic bars on the wall, and her butcher's knives and cleavers hanging from a bar on the side of her chopping block. (Not the front of the block, as erroneously shown in the Smithsonian display and some other sources.) I don't have a chopping block, so I keep some of my knives in a drawer fitted with knife slots.
This is 360 bucks wow
How will that thing fit under your upper cabinets? I guess I'll display it in the middle of my dining table lol
Yeah I measured and most cabinets are 18" clearance. 12" for the block+average of 5-6" for the handle. Longer knife handles barely clear the bottom of the cabinet.
This has been posted before??
She’s right: BUILD YOUR COLLECTION!
Imagine this:
You’re a newlywed and you’re broke. Don’t go to Walmart and buy Faberware. Instead, go onto Shitake or Hinkle’s website (or Williams-Sonoma and buy one good quality knife every 3-4 months. In 18-24 months you will have a complete great quality set that will last 2 lifetimes. Plus buy THEIR knife block.
You're gonna be spending $600 if you want to keep more than 6 knives
I'm not impressed with your winner here. It looks like it only holds about 6-8 knives. For that price, it should accommodate more. And it's tall...will it even fit on my counter under the upper cabinets when it has a tall knife on it? I'm in the market, so I may go for your best buy instead.
Get a magnetic rack. Got one from global. Holds any knife and does not take up space on the desk
Hello
I thought this would be a self defense video...
underated comment
Ouch!
Do not ever buy one of those wooden blocks without the magnets that have slots for you to put the knives into. I had one and looked down into the bottom of the slots one day and found nests of cockroaches and cockroach eggs in the bottom of the slots. Never again.
Should have bought it 4years ago, now it’s worth $100 more. 😂
I'm thinking about a knife wall instead
It is now $299.
Just saying they did review knife magnets. The winner was by messermeister
You missed the best block: Sim Prium universal cylinder block. Had ours nearly 10/years, no wear in block, very flexible in use-everything but a cleaver, stable, small for amount of storage - we have roughly 8 knives, blades completely protected, and one handed use. Available on Amazon for $16.
Best knife block is not ceramic knives friendly.
where did the black haired lady go? She is so much better.
Lost some credibility here when you comment about knife exposure on first block but not your winner???
If you're poor, buy this one! What's that? Show you how well it works for $68?!?! What do we look like - an honest review channel? Hahahahaha!
This was nothing but an ad for a $250 knife block not worth it
jesus christ for $299 I could just buy a nice knife set and have a block constructed for them.
Lol most of my knives are $200 or more a piece. The 21 knives i have cost around 3,500 dollars.
@@baddrivercam You wasted a lot of money just so you could tell people that.
Smh they do realize that the majority of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck right? No way I’m spending that kind of dough on a knife block!
No bristles, no magnets ... the old angled block (with proper depth) is always the winner ... and less expensive.
Dead on right
Amazon has a great variety.
You talk about a safety issue with blades sticking out of the plastic block but then go on to endorse the design trifecta with all blades exposed and blades sticking above the block!! I don't get it. I have bought dozens of items from the test kitchen but this guy doesnt know anything. Its like a commercial. Very disappointed.
Knife blocks? Like if you came here for martial arts techniques and stayed for their reasonable and well done consumer advice.
Wow! First time this show has let me down. Way too expensive a model and really just a gadget more than a helpful kitchen tool. What the heck happened to the true and trusted knife block. All knives fit perfectly and the whole set can go on my counter under the cabinet within easy reach. All knives are safe and ready for use. Magnets will not hold when the knife is bumped at the right angle. Murphy’s Law, it will always be hit at just the right angle to fall off and become a dangerous object. Please folks, redo this knife holder test!
tfw you mostly use ceramic knives...
They were easy to get off? That’s what she said
Too expensive!
Time to do a vid on woks ....
They don't use them because our stoves are not built for them. They consistently say to use a regular frying pan on an American stove over a Wok.
@@billvegas8146 get a frigging wok ring to use on the range ...
@@johnlord8337 Don't take it out on me. Tell it to ATK.
@@billvegas8146 They can read my comment - but you were the one typing a reply ....
It’s $299 now and I think it’s ugly.
Please go back to school and realize what the word and that is a ND means when you’re talking about numbers.
Didn't like any of them
I’m not feeling any of these. None of them look safe.
that is...truly hideous.
Sorry, the winner has the knife blades exposed. This is the only time I haven't liked a winner in one of your tests. Magnets weaken over time. Let's see how much you're loving it in a couple of years
No serious cook would use a knife block. You would use a magnetic strip fastened to the wall or the side of a cabinet. Knife blocks are inherently unsanitary. You people at America's Test Kitchen should know better.
