I love the way you explain things including the tone in which you speak… I’m hearing impaired and I always use CC. But it’s so nice to-be able to “hear” you when it’s quiet in my house. God Bless you!
Thanks so much Terry. Your tutorials have been my saving grace during Covid, as they're are no classes to learn in. I check out your tutorials, and many times go over them again, a few months later. You have great teachng skills. Thanks again.
I think I know somethings about sewing (been sewing since I was 13) but each time I listen I learn something I didn't know. Thank you so much for your time and your investment in us. Truly appreciate it!
Thank you so much. This has been confusing as I hear different things about which bobbin to use. What is the alternate bobbin used for? I was told one was for embroidery and one for sewing. I LOVE your videos
Thank you so much for clearing up the confusion about the different bobbin cases, AND the extra information on the bobbin clips! I had no idea they could be clipped together.
Thank you so much. I am new to Brother and Luminaire and am loving it largely because I discover your Facebook group. My dealers are wonderful. I could not ask for better, but if I have a question during their off times I find you to be most helpful. Thank you for what you are doing for us.
Hi Terry, I just purchased a Luminaire 2, and had an issue with the bobbin cases Thank you so very much for this informative video. I have a great Brother dealer, but my glitch occurred early Sunday morning. I'm going to be watching your other Luminaire video. Thanks again.
Hi Terri, I’m new to the Luminaire and your videos are a true blessing. So a sincere Thank You! I am not new to sewing. Regarding the chalk pencil brush, I believe that the brush is intended to remove chalk from your material and not a machine cleaning brush. You might want to verify that. Thanks again!
Merci beaucoup! Thanks so much! I was told to use the bobbin case with the blue point for embroidery, but since I couldn't find this information in the manual I went to consult your wonderful videos and I found my answer which is NO. Big thanks. I have a question: would it be possible that the subtitles of your videos can also be in French. We are sorely lacking a tutorial about the Luminaire in French.
Terry, your instructional videos are very helpful. I have a question. I have a Brother Sewing/Embroidery machine. I watched the video you posted a couple days ago on Stitching Part 3, I think, and I saw you had your upper thread tension at the default 4.0. It seems that this might be okay for thicker than a embroidered towel, but I had White Bobbin thread show on the top in several areas doing Satin Stitches of the alphabet letters. I’ve also noticed that when Embroidering a Tee Shirt for my wife is that 4.0 would be way too much tension and I lower it to 0.8 and sometimes even less. And I use a 50 wt Embroidery Thread. Puckering also seems to be an issue for me on Tee Shirt Material, which I always use the thicker cut away stabilizer. I sure there are a lot of different things that could be causing the puckering. I don’t have the puckering issue with denim like material that is more stable. Anyway, thanks for any advice on any of these issues, from a 5 month first time Brother Machine owner.
William Anderson - I am not sure what machine you have, but I rarely have to adjust tension on the Sewing side. When I am doing free motion, I typically do have to adjust the top tension. Are you using an embroidery needle? On denim fabric I would use at least an 80/12 or a 90/14. On T-shirt’s, I would use a 70/10 or 80/12 universal embroidery needle. You mentioned embroidering a towel and the bobbin thread showing on the top. Are you using a 60 weight thread in the bobbin? I typically use a 40 weight embroidery thread on top with a 60 weight on the bobbin. If you have the Dream Machine or the Luminaire are you using the bobbin case with the green screw? If you are having to lower your tension as low as 0.8, something sounds amiss. I would ask my dealer to check the tension. It is not unusual to have to make small adjustments to tension for some designs, such as lettering. Try stitching the design out on a piece of quilting cotton with a medium weight tear away stabilizer. For the t-shirt embroidery, look for a fusible cutaway. This stabilizes the knit that is going to stretch quite a bit. Some tension problems and puckering, can also be cause by poor digitizing and resizing designs without adjusting the stitch density. I show this on videos in the Embroidery edit function. William, almost all of my stabilizers are medium weight. If I was just starting with embroidery, I would buy a good quality medium cut away, medium tear away, a topper for towels and a fusible cutaway for knits.
Terry Maffitt, Thanks for your reply to my questions. I have the Brother SE1900, it has the sewing arm and a embroidery arm that plugs in. I mostly use it for embroidery. My bobbins are pre wound 60 wt and my PolyStar 64 Brother embroidery colors are 50 wt. so the embroidery foot is usually always installed for embroidery. For denim I do use a Jean 90 needle. For tee shirts I use a 70/12 needle. I have had less puckering when using a medium weight cut away stabilizer, but I lower the tension as I mentioned when Embroidering on a tee shirt. My wife likes Hummingbirds and bought many designs from Etsy that are sometimes pretty dense and that’s what contributes to some puckering. On some of her hummer designs they are like quilling stitches and they do not pucker at all, but since the tee shirt is a thin material I do lower the tension as I mentioned. My machine was new and only about 5 months old. I have done my jean jacket, many tee shirts, some dresses for her, and 3 baseball caps. As I mentioned, it seems when the material is thin verses a thicker material, that’s when I get puckering. For a great example, I watched a lady on UA-cam make a Garden Flag. We have several in our garden now. So, I went to Joann Fabrics and bought a Nylon type Sail cloth like material. It is 12” X 18”. I embroidered a Butterfly in one corner, a Hummingbird in the other corner, some flower design above the word Summer, with another heavily dense garden design under that. It was and is cute, but it is puckered all over each design. Of course I followed the ladies recommendation of using No Show Stabilizer for the backing, but here again, thin material, dense designs, and a really thin No Show Stabilizer, cause the flag material is White in color. Anyway, we learn by trial and error. I’m still a novice, but it is a fun hobby and mesmerizing to watch the machine stitch out a beautiful design, even though it might not be professional, but I like them just the same. Thanks again for listening and your quick responsive reply.
We are having trouble when embroidery with at Brother Luminaire. My wife has a frog embroidery pattern she likes to make and put on the back of each quilt she makes. After the Luminaire was serviced an issue with thread nesting has started. She has watched videos on threading the machine and nothing has helped to resolve the nesting problem. Have you encountered thread nesting issues while embroidering?
Thread nesting is almost always related to the thread not getting seated in the top tension. If your wife has used the machine and never had problems with embroidery and thread nesting, I would take it to the dealer. Make sure she is using both hands to thread the top and the presser foot is up. This opens the door above the take up lever. I recommend using the green screw bobbin case with self wound bobbins and the purple dot bobbin case with pre-wounds. It is important that both the top and bottom threads are in the tension.
The brush on the pink chalk pencil is to remove the chalk from the fabric, DO NOT use this brush on the machine, Its to stiff and you may cause damage to it.
Correct, it was a blooper that I mentioned in notes and another video. If I didn’t edit the video and add a text statement to that effect, I will do so.

Thank-you SO much for your videos. What a blessing you are to many people (and I just found you yesterday!!).
Just purchased my machine. Own a Dream machine but there are enough differences that I am finding your videos very helpful. Thank you.
Your video was so helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for explaining the mystery!!!!!

Dale m - that definitely makes more sense. It definitely is not good for cleaning, lol!
I just bought a Luminaire 2. Love your tutorials.
patsy osborn - Congratulations. I hope you enjoy your machine.
Another good video, Terry. I so appreciate these videos and thank you for them.
You are the best teacher
Glad to better understand the distinction between bobbin casings.
Thanks for clearing up this bobbin question.
Thank you for making this video so informative, you make it so easy to understand
These videos have been so helpful, thank you.
Thanks for this great video, Terry!

Is it okay to use the magnetic prewounds?
Will parts from Dream Machine will they work in Luminaire the feet, bobbin casing
Terry, is it OK to use power duster to remove lint around the bobbin area for cleaning purpose? Thanks.
I would use the brush, you don’t want more lint to fall in your machine.
Thanks, do you know the part number for the one with green screw? And what is the purple for one used for
You can adjust the tension on this bobbin case
I meant green dot bobbin .
Shouldn't the machine be off to open it up?
Claire V - yes it should and you will get an error message to that effect but I needed the lighting.
The brush on the pink chalk pencil is to remove the chalk from the fabric, DO NOT use this brush on the machine, Its to stiff and you may cause damage to it.

My dealer said to always use green bobbin in dream machine I buy my prewound bobbins from my dealer
My sewing machine 4423 Singer heavy-duty I want bobinecase
