Maybe Heljan expects people to use those chain-links, but trying a Hornby or Dapol NEM might solve the issue, OR just drop the slim tension-lock and try some other style/type one! But it is a decent model. BTW i serviced my Roco (H0) class 08 today (yes they made one), and i was surprised to find brass bearings in a 20+ years old modell (not DCC ready), I knew about the 5 pole motor with a huge flywheel (parts list), but the directional lights used selenium plates (not diodes)! That loco has quite a few other interesting technical solutions too!
Yeah maybe - that's pretty non-standard though isn't it? If they expect that, I'd have to ask..why? That's pretty interesting too - I didn't know about the selenium! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Judging by Heljans and Bachmanns prices I have a feeling they are cousins! I was going to get one but not paying close to a hundred pounds for a three pole motor! Why do these people keep Insulting and gouging everyone at every opportunity? Shameful. The detail is quite impressive. With the three link coupling chum, you can actually hook the bottom link on the hook; that will keep it out of the way of the NEM slot. I used to do it sometimes when shunting with real locos! (Except there was no NEM couplings on life sized locos) I am normally a BR blue modeller but I actually love the golden yellow livery as depicted. Great review mukka. Cheers from Oz. Gaz

I always thought it was so cool that thomas and friends had all three of the main shunters in the southern dockyards. Thomas (E2), Rosie (USA Class) and Salty (BR 07). Might buy this to give Salty a friend.
@@SamsTrains at least neither Thomas or Rosie hold a grudge against Salty since his class did replace the E2's and the US dock tanks in the Southern dockyards

I HATE having to fit the couplings on models, that was my biggest complaint about the Garratt. I don't really have any suitable tools for fitting couplings, and my clumsy fingers usually ended up scratched on bloody from trying to squeeze it in by hand. I think manufacturers should always send the model with couplings, but make them easy to remove and add other details for the buffer in case you want to use it for display purposes
I do too actually - and because there was no access to the socket, this one was an *absolute* pain. Agreed - models should come ready to run... that's the whole point! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, The numbered discs were used in Southampton Docks to indicate which duty that specific loco was allocated to. This practice carried on even after radios were fitted. They still use an 07 in Arlington's Eastleigh works as their main shunting loco. The high level pipes were added for shunting Southern EMU stock. Glad you found a Heljan you like!
Great video Sam it looks very nice in that livery In my opinion Heljan is a great company because they actually think about what people want and when you consider that they make locomotives that no other manufacturer would ever make that is why they are good
Wow, that’s new! Love the 07 shunters. It’s impressive how exactly half of them are still around. Coincidentally a similar outcome for the Class 73 Electro Diesels.
@@SamsTrains Yes. Really. Once, there were 49 class 73 locos, but I think I meant to say that half of these are still in use, 25 to be precise. 8 were preserved and 6 were stored. Only 10 of them were scrapped.
@@SamsTrains It’s funny how Heljan can produce diesels to an excellent caliber. But the steam engines they produced can be mortifyingly sloppy and a bit rushed and look like they are destabilising..
Hmmm..hi Sam - well not just with this loco, but I really think you should give more emphasis to performance in reviews - maybe a bigger proportion of the score? These locos aren't to put it on the shelf and admire, they're working models, and for me something less detailed, but that works well, is what I'd buy. Of course it's nice to have both aspects, but a wonderful appearance is irrelevant if it doesn't run well. In this case, I wouldn't dream of buying a shunter that doesn't couple and uncouple properly, and that alone means I don't care what it looks like, but add the poor mechanism (motor, no bearings, and hard to chip or service) and I'd say it's not fit for purpose and send it back!
You might be right about that - they certainly should be 100% fit for purpose in this day and age, agreed! Thanks for your feed back! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
pretty cool model, sure the mechanism and the repairability aspect are quite a let down, but those aside the model is a very decent runner and quite the looker on the track
HNRC is Harry Needle Railroad Company, who specialises in renovating old diesel locos. This particular loco, 07001, was refurbished by them and leased to the Manchester Creative Logistics site, before being stored at Barrow Hill along with many other HNRC-owned locos. It is now owned by the heritage shunters trust who are based at Rowsley on Peak Rail.
I cannot wait for a thomas versus real life salty vs this beauty! The detail on this loco is, well, amazing! But that does bring up something that I’ve never thought about. Can an engine have too much detail? Does too much detract from the actual model? I wonder. That orange livery is very unique, I like it! Great review Sam!
What a neat little loco. I have a soft spot for little industrial shunters. Hey Heljan- less 1361 and Tango, more Garratt and Lucky 07, please! Other Heljans I'd be interested in seeing reviewed are the Class 15, 16, & 17. I have to give them props for making models of such obscure & unsuccessful locos, and I'm fascinated by how US-style road switchers (15 & 16) and Continental-style offset cab (17) engines failed in the UK. Get the newest version you can find of them: I've read that early versions of each were plagued with reliability and detail problems.
I bought my first ever locomotive and rolling stock! I ordered the Bachmann Thomas and the Bachmann Annie & Clarabel coaches on Amazon a few days ago, they just arrived in the mail today!!! I received Thomas and Annie only because Clarabel is arriving next month . I have tested Annie, she's a really smooth runner with little to no problems. I haven't tested Thomas yet because I'm saving up to buy a rolling road so I don't need to have a big circle of track
For shunting Heljan probably expect the NEM coupling to be the one with the Kadee Coupler as it will extend a little further and does not need the up and down movement. What is it in 2020 to keep making Locos with out proper bearings. I totally agree with you Sam. It is high time that proper bearings became a standard for all manufactures.
Possibly, though in that case I would have expected them to include a Kadee, rather than the tension lock. Although if they expected Kadees, that's another serious oversight... as that's not standard on any British locos or rolling stock xD Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Perhaps they made it for collectors to put on a shelf and be admired. You know how much collectors will pay and that would explain the screw couplings fitted when purchased.
Great review and I agree with your assessment of the engine but I think these companies should be held accountable for the shoddy ness no matter what the price for the benefit of the hobby. Keep those great videos coming.
Thanks a lot mate - no fear, a video like this exposing poor mechanisms is my way of holding companies accountable... now 20,000 people know exactly what's going on! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
As an American, I always watch your videos just in case there is anything I want to import. I think I’m importing this one! I’m a sucker for separately-applied details. I will get one in BR Blue and hopefully put some ESU LokSound inside it. Debating whether or not to put Salty’s theme from the original T&F on the sound file as an Easter egg!
hello sam the level of detail on this model is beyond beautiful and its nice to see 3 generations of shunters of south hamton docks in one running season and nice to see that you have found a heljan loco that you can recommend and nice to see the E2 again and love the video from daivd
Whenever I run one of my Heljan diesels I check the trackside for bits that have dropped off. The latest find was two sandboxes off my Class 23 Baby Deltic. Totally agree regards the couplings; these models seem to have been designed for the display cabinet rather than the rough and tumble of the layout
That’s gotta be the funkiest music intro ever surely I’m not the only one who wants a link to the full version to listen to? Great review as always Sam!
haha thank you! I went for a later music era for this livery! I don't have a link sadly - it will have come from the UA-cam library! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I just wanted to let you know how good the Heljan 29301 is. I am impressed by the model. When I saw your positive review, I was skeptical as I got burned (litteraly...) in the past by this manufacturer but I decided to give it a shot. It is a very well assembled model with no fallings parts, flashing, glue marks (unlike other Heljan products I got in the past). It also did not catched on fire (yeah... that also happened with the same model that had all of the above!). The only few down sides I found was that there is no bearing on the wheels and that they also have the screw link coupling and air pipes on the buffer beams that needs to be removed to install a coupling in the NEM pocket. Talking about couplings, I used some extra from an Oxford Rails model as the one that came with it were not moulded correctly. Anyway, I'm really happy about this model overall. Very unusual, has a lot of character and I'm thinking about getting a second one!
Very glad to hear that! Yes it's very impressive for a Heljan isn't it? Overall probably the best I've seen! Yes the mechanism and other minor features aren't very good... but much better than usual! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Another great review. I have a Heljan class 27 and it is the only loco that gets all around my layout without stalling somewhere! May of course be more due to my poor track laying.
I’ve got one. Ran the first one on DC but it wobbled all over the place after coupling up some coaches I had. Returned to dealer for replacement 2nd one better. Stored it till I got round to fitting DCC. Absolute pain! Wire came off PCB and I had to guess where it went(no wiring diagram available anywhere )Luckily now fine . Moral learnt. If you DCC any loco do it straight away because if there are any wiring probs after expired warranty you are stuck with it. Super smooth and lights superb on DCC.
Ahh sorry to hear that - yes the quality of the mechanism still leaves a lot to be desired. And definitely - I wouldn't recommend trying to chip this yourself unless you have the patience of a saint! xD Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam!, i actually have four of these locos and unfortunately they dont describe this but those couplings you have must be bad they work perfectly on all four of mine couple softly every time. sucks that you got one with a lemon coupler! :(
I have a specific phrase that I don’t think I made up, every plus has a minus. In this case there are more pluses, but I do hate how you take the thing apart. Sure it’s astonishing in the detail aspect but you need to keep the details on. Why Heljan haven’t thought of this I will have no idea. Brilliant review. Looking forward to seeing more, Dan.
Yes to buying. The detail is excellent so it'll probably grow on you, just don't think about the next service. Need a longer necked coupling, there's something Heljan should include but wont.
Thanks Jimmy! Yeah it's grown on me for sure, and a longer necked coupling would be essential here... what were they thinking?! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Helpful review, thank you! Just received mine and what a sweet runner! However the buffers are flimsy and weakling sprung. Installing the NEM couplers I have not conquered yet. I wish a special tool was provided. I purchased this model after my school master named "Needles"! Your massive contribution to the hobby is so significant to this neophyte. Best thanks ~ Chris
I really like the 07, I think it may be my favourite british diesel shunter, at least from my experience with it in the Train Sim. There's something about its proportions, and its unusually short cab, that makes me just enjoy watching it go.
It's a nice brightly colored shunter I would assign it to a steel mill or a factory of some sort. I happen to like industrial shunters. You should have an engine like this running in the background on an auto reversing line, shunting wagons or made to look like it is. 👍
The anticipation before watching every Heljan review is like playing the lottery - will Sam finally get a winning ticket? I wonder if Sam's Heljan experience would miraculously improve were he to start pronouncing their name as the Danes do? 😹
Now I might be wrong, but the Harry Needle livery seems very similar to the old (70's-80's) ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) livery that they used on their industrial locos. And I notice that it's pulling ICI Salt wagons.
On modern models, having the buffer details not applied is actually good as it makes adding your preffered couplings easier. I like using Kadees and those for NEM pocket have a swivelling motion and you are in that case having it easier not only to add the Kadees but also have the most of them without hitting on the brake lines and prototype coupling imitations. On steamers this genrally an issue as they lack all these details.
One of the big thing with shunters or switchers is a stady slow performancw and getting currewnt just as important, especially considering a model with such short wheelbase. On th couplings, I guess the model is supposed torun with more modern wagons so it is not an issue, if it is try to use Kadees as the coulers themself pivot, at least for those fmade for nem pockets.
I’m just coming back to OO gauge after moving house… this would fit my plans perfectly. Do Heljan only do limited runs? Eg: should I buy one now and keep it rather than hoping to buy later and see they’re all out of stock?
The unpainted axel ends aren't entirely inaccurate, it depended on where the loco was based or if it was on a special train as sheds liked to shine up their locomotives, in preservation it happens now and again because railways are proud of their locos and just like in the old days want to shine up the loco.
Looks very good, working lights as well. Maybe a little too fragile for me and it looks like another locomotive where fitting DCC will be a world of adventure. Just wondering if it does have a definite front though, I would have thought the front would have been nearest the cab.
Thanks Ian, definitely too fragile! haha I’m not sure about the front, I just picked an end, but I think your logic sounds right! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Possibly one of the only partially competent Heljan locos, it seems (save for the price, god damn that's a lot for a 0-6-0). Early diesel shunters do tend to look nice, and this one is no exception. (I only have a Railroad BR Class 06 when it comes to diesel shunters, but it still looks nice)
A very nice loco, detailing is superb but as I run dcc , I think I would cheat and buy from hattons not only is it a more acceptable price as £140 rrp for a shunter (do me a favor) let them fit the decoader and have the hassle, I'm a bit disappointed about it not having any axle bearings, I was thinking of buying one for my layout, but after seeing your review I'm gonna hold back for a while , maybe prices will drop a bit after Xmas,
Excellent review of the Heljan BR Class 07 Sam 👍👍 I’ve got one in BR blue with the red side rods and what I think of the model, it is fantastic on the move, but after watching your review, I was surprised by the fact it has a awful way of taking every single part of the body to get to the motor. And yes the coppering on this model is annoying to connecting up to any rolling stock.
@20:50 Lol there is a reason it's called "Thomas and Friends". Wow have to say the detail is really nice; wish we also got to see it running from the left side as I was intrigued with seeing the extra coupling rods in action. It's a wonder why they never got the couplings right as that's a very important element especially for a shunter.
Great review! Awesome looking loco, I hope the issues you found with it aren't wide spread with this model because it looks awesome and some of the problems are unacceptable with such a fantastic looking (and expensive) loco. Keep up the good work!
Just like to point out that the only times I have recieved locos with minor damage, such as your handrail, it's been when I've ordered from Hatton's. They're a very good retailer overall. Their range and online features are superb, but I do notice they have a tendency to damage their stock.
That's interesting Keithy - but they don't directly handle any of their stock to my knowledge, it's all kept within the packaging, so that's quite strange! There is a lot of this about though - quite a few models have quality issues, though I haven't noticed many loose details of late! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains It could just be luck of the draw, and as I do tend to buy from them the probability of a damaged model coming from them goes up. They must handle the models for their DCC fitting service though, which I do use because it's a lot less work for me. I still think it's ridiculous that all models sold today aren't DCC fitted as standard.
Sam- watched your review of the 07 (sorry I took so long) and agree regarding your view on the detailing parts being made as an option to fit to the bufferbeam. I emailed Heljan UK on 31/01/22 about why all this detailing was factory fitted to all their locos as it prevented the models from being instantly available as a ready-to-run model for the average modeller. They promptly replied and stated it was because customers wanted it fitted and during the period when it wasn't they received numerous complaints from customers. I still can't help feeling it is pandering to a small minority.
Thanks for sharing Robert - yes pandering to a small minority is right - I'm sure I once did a poll to find out what people would prefer, and the majority voted for the extras not to be fitted! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Thanks for replying. I wonder if you could do another poll and find out if the answer is the same. If this proves to be so, then forward it to Heljan UK.
Cool model Sam! I always think of Salty when I see these! Shame they replaced Thomas and Rosie’s Class :( Amazing that half of them are preserved as well as some of Rosie’s Class! but none of Thomas’ Class :(
I would like one of these I have seen them reviewed before and they look great. In terms of performance is sounds better than the mechanism on my super detailed Hornby class 08, which I am yet to add some modelling white grease to see if it stops the horrible grinding noise.
@@lukeslocomotives oh dear. I have been told that applying a load of the modelling white grease on the gears will hopefully reduce the noise. It's a common issue with this model.
Thanks Sam great review as usual, just my opinion, a shunter that can't couple without slamming it into its wagons is a big turn off, It could probably be fixed but even for 99 pounds it is still to much for a three pole motor, no bearings, detail that falls off, dodgy couplings, messy finish (glue marks), and self tappers that don't secure anything, i am very much a ready to run modeller and to me this falls short of the basis requirements, I would send it back but not sure I'd want to risk another. However, I do agree it does look good pulling it's train of wagons :) Cheers Drew
Thanks Drew, that’s absolutely true, the couplings weren’t fit for purpose, and those screws were a joke for what the model cost! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Love the 07s, I really need to get myself one, as well as a USA tank. The Harry Needle Railroad Company owns several locos, a lot of which are based at Barrow Hill. As a future addition to reviews, could you include details on DCC features, like what sort of socket is fitted, how easy it is to access the socket (like you did the bachmann hall), and if a speaker or space for a speaker is included?
Always been tempted by the Class 07 model, will have to look into getting one for the future. Quick question have you ever thought about reviewing 009 scaled models? (Narrow gauge). Heljan have made a few in the past and have been fairly tempted by them in the past. Fantastic video as usual!
A competition between this and the Bachmann salty would be really cool! However the Bachmann salty is discontinued so you might have to do some searching on eBay. I was able to get mine as a Christmas gift a few years ago back when it wasn’t too much money, but I don’t know how much they go for on eBay now.
as usual I value your reviews as you always present all the information I want about a model. albeit a little on the kind side, I mean a shunter unable to couple, sort of like a square wheel then. useful in rare circumstances at80 or less i'd but it for the detail and a lovely and unusual livery, but I would probably buy a shunters wagon and wire it to the "back" end and live with that compromise just to watch it haul a goods train around. but someone at heljan needs a dynamite enima! excuse language, but I dont know how to say that in milder terms, drastic action seems required at least one of their designers needs to be re tasked to sweeping thecar park perhaps? or mopping it dry in the rain
It's Ok for continuous running but if you wanted it for say a marshalling or goods yard with constant shunting, it would be a nightmare with those couplers. The hooks would have to be removed to just leave the bar.
The review was as usual superb with the technicality of the loco being brought into attention which I like the most besides the look of the gadget...but man this little diesel is slow as a tram!!!!!!!! I hope you're running this in normal volts. Were the dockyard locos really slow in real life???
G'day Sam. Great review as always. I'm a sucker for a loco with stripes. I haven't brought a new British loco for ages, I think that's about to change😁😎
Quick question. What is the big deal with 5 pole vs 3 pole motors? I dont seem to notice clear performance differences on the two. Its at least really good to see that Heljan diesels are pretty good. They have some really fun models.
It's tricky, because a 3 pole motor can run well if the gearing is correct... but generally 5 pole motors have much better torque at the slow speeds! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That loco Looks great h.n.r.c is Harry needle railroad company which is based at barrow hill Roundhouse Although the loco is now preserved at peak rail great video as normal.
Imagine you getting a Thomas & Friends Bachmann Salty to go along with this, that’d be awesome to see! But idk if you can do a review on it because of COPPA.
We can still watch the video if he ever makes a review like that, but one thing that annoys me is that I can’t comment on the video if said video was made for kids.
What a beautifully detailed model That really looks the part Such a shame it’s so delicate that the bits fall off The coupling is unbelievable The livery is the Harry Needle Railway Company A spot hire company that owns hundreds of ex BR engines apparently
I managed to get a new style never unboxed Bachmann 03 in weathered BR Blue with a cab light for £55 (They also had two more at that price but not weathered). It’s my most detailed loco and probably the best bargain I’ve ever gotten.
I find it morbidly funny that Thomas, Rosie, and Salty are friends, considering.... Thomas's class was withdrawn and scrapped thanks to.... Rosie's class which was then withdrawn and scrapped thanks to..... SALTY'S CLASS!
Hey Sam! I would like to ask if you could possibly review one of the locomotives by the big European manufacturers (Roco or Fleischmann). I think it would be quite interesting to compare them to locomotives from Heljan, Bachmann or Hornby!
That is a very attractive little engine. Used to work at Southampton Docks. HNRC = Harry Needle Railroad Company, owns a variety of traction for spot hire.
Hi SamGood Review. Great Looking Loco and model, very usefull on preserved lines. Harry Needle railroad Co Worksop ( the old DB Schenker wagon repair depot). Model a bit expesive although it is amazingly detailed.
Beautiful shell slightly underwhelming mechanism than? It sounds like something that should be on more of a discount but i do get the logic i think they are applying: make the innards cheap and the exterior pretty and people will buy it. oh that ground pound moment... make the loco move with just a tad bit of your frustration directed at ground (tactics not recommended if the ground constitutes of foamy materials). i feel that was possibly most satisfying bit.

you should try a heljan 33 and/or a 68 from dapol!
Great idea Dom, I'd love to! :D

Wow, that’s new! Love the 07 shunters. It’s impressive how exactly half of them are still around. Coincidentally a similar outcome for the Class 73 Electro Diesels.
haha yeah I thought that too - ooh really??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Beautiful video!!!!
Ciao from Italy!
Thanks mate!! Ciao from the UK xD

Thanks for watching, Sam :)
pretty cool model, sure the mechanism and the repairability aspect are quite a let down, but those aside the model is a very decent runner and quite the looker on the track
Thanks mate, yeah overall I was very impressed! :D

Thanks a lot for this Dan, duly noted! :D

I cannot wait for a thomas versus real life salty vs this beauty! The detail on this loco is, well, amazing! But that does bring up something that I’ve never thought about. Can an engine have too much detail? Does too much detract from the actual model? I wonder. That orange livery is very unique, I like it! Great review Sam!
haha that would be fun - I'd need a Salty first though! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks Sharky, absolutely, but better than expected! Thanks for those, I’ll look out for them!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I bought my first ever locomotive and rolling stock! I ordered the Bachmann Thomas and the Bachmann Annie & Clarabel coaches on Amazon a few days ago, they just arrived in the mail today!!! I received Thomas and Annie only because Clarabel is arriving next month
. I have tested Annie, she's a really smooth runner with little to no problems. I haven't tested Thomas yet because I'm saving up to buy a rolling road so I don't need to have a big circle of track
Ooh fantastic - glad to hear they're okay for you!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Although if they expected Kadees, that's another serious oversight... as that's not standard on any British locos or rolling stock xD
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ooh fantastic Brian, good luck and I hope you really enjoy it! :D

hello sam the level of detail on this model is beyond beautiful and its nice to see 3 generations of shunters of south hamton docks in one running season and nice to see that you have found a heljan loco that you can recommend and nice to see the E2 again and love the video from daivd
I know - the level of detail was mind blowing! Thanks mate - really happy about that! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Whenever I run one of my Heljan diesels I check the trackside for bits that have dropped off. The latest find was two sandboxes off my Class 23 Baby Deltic.
Totally agree regards the couplings; these models seem to have been designed for the display cabinet rather than the rough and tumble of the layout
haha me too - it's a regular occurrence! For sure - display models without a doubt!

That’s gotta be the funkiest music intro ever surely I’m not the only one who wants a link to the full version to listen to? Great review as always Sam!
haha thank you! I went for a later music era for this livery! I don't have a link sadly - it will have come from the UA-cam library!

Sam'sTrains ua-cam.com/video/3ovwNGhvokk/v-deo.html no worries I found it on Shazam :) nice to see some more diesels btw ;)
Arrrr, what a sensationally seaworthy video...Salty approves, me heartie!
haha glad to hear that, lol! ;D
Good one True Blue, good one
All you need to do is paint it red Sam
Another great review. I have a Heljan class 27 and it is the only loco that gets all around my layout without stalling somewhere! May of course be more due to my poor track laying.
haha glad to hear that - I'll have to look into the 27 myself! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ordered it. Looking forward to that arriving!
Fantastic!! Really hope you enjoy it - keep me posted! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
And definitely - I wouldn't recommend trying to chip this yourself unless you have the patience of a saint! xD
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have this loco in Br Blue livery. It's a masterpiece. One of the best locomotives ever made.
Hey Sam!, i actually have four of these locos and unfortunately they dont describe this but those couplings you have must be bad they work perfectly on all four of mine couple softly every time. sucks that you got one with a lemon coupler! :(
Ahh very interesting - glad to hear it's not all of them - thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice model sam! Lovely detail. You were right - it was inside cylinders for the mystery connection, as you chose a B12! Thanks for the video, Loco!
Thanks mate - and well done, that's it!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hehehe... "Grinds my gears!" Change the oil in your gearbox often mukka! My gears were stripped years ago!
haha!! xD
Looking forward to seeing more, Dan.
haha yeah, I guess that's quite true in many cases! Yeah, I didn't get that either - seemed very silly!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Dude do a competition on your diesel and the j70 steam tram
Great idea Viktor!! :D
I wish
a special tool was provided.
Great to hear that Adam, they are lovely aren't they? I agree! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review Sam. Hopefully by the end of next year we will see the 100k subscriber silver plague in your room!!!
Thanks so much mate, that would be absolutely amazing!! :D

It's a nice brightly colored shunter I would assign it to a steel mill or a factory of some sort. I happen to like industrial shunters. You should have an engine like this running in the background on an auto reversing line, shunting wagons or made to look like it is. 👍
The thumbnail makes it show it has tones of detail keep it up sam
haha yeah - you can tell just from the photo! ;D

Oh its my favourite shunter

The anticipation before watching every Heljan review is like playing the lottery - will Sam finally get a winning ticket?
I wonder if Sam's Heljan experience would miraculously improve were he to start pronouncing their name as the Danes do? 😹
haha very true Kenneth! Let’s see, when they start getting models right, I’ll make the effort and say their name right ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Now I might be wrong, but the Harry Needle livery seems very similar to the old (70's-80's) ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) livery that they used on their industrial locos. And I notice that it's pulling ICI Salt wagons.
I've just googled it - you're right - it does look pretty similar!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Would you think 🤔 a little more grease around the bearings. And possibly a more wider on the base for the wheels.
Yeah that's true... though their design on this model made the NEM pockets essentially useless anyway, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yes of course - the examples I’m referring to from Helena were inaccurate though!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Extremely well detailed Sam, still a way to go to justify the price tag, but will be popular with many modelers I'm sure...Bob
Thanks Bob - yeah I'd agree with that!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
(I only have a Railroad BR Class 06 when it comes to diesel shunters, but it still looks nice)
haha very much so - at least that I've experienced anyway!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Fun fact: The British Rail Class 07 was used as the inspiration for the character Salty from “Thomas and Friends”.
It was indeed - well done! :D

Aside from the nem couplings not fitting (i had to file them to fit) my 07 was perfect. best model in my collection
The white discs will be headcode discs but used to identify the duty the loco was on. Think they are a hold over from their time at Southampton docks
Ahh okay Matt, thanks for this! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A very nice loco, detailing is superb but as I run dcc , I think I would cheat and buy from hattons not only is it a more acceptable price as £140 rrp for a shunter (do me a favor) let them fit the decoader and have the hassle, I'm a bit disappointed about it not having any axle bearings, I was thinking of buying one for my layout, but after seeing your review I'm gonna hold back for a while , maybe prices will drop a bit after Xmas,
Thanks Vic, definitely a good idea to have someone else do it! Yes the mechanism still didn’t quite pass muster!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent review of the Heljan BR Class 07 Sam 👍👍
I’ve got one in BR blue with the red side rods and what I think of the model, it is fantastic on the move, but after watching your review, I was surprised by the fact it has a awful way of taking every single part of the body to get to the motor. And yes the coppering on this model is annoying to connecting up to any rolling stock.
Thanks so much Joe - yeah that was definitely a letdown, decent overall though! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@20:50 Lol there is a reason it's called "Thomas and Friends". Wow have to say the detail is really nice; wish we also got to see it running from the left side as I was intrigued with seeing the extra coupling rods in action. It's a wonder why they never got the couplings right as that's a very important element especially for a shunter.
haha I guess so! Ahh sorry about that - I'll try to show that some time!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Lol it's ok. Not very many models have variance in coupling rods. It's probably the only one I've seen so far :)
Great review! Awesome looking loco, I hope the issues you found with it aren't wide spread with this model because it looks awesome and some of the problems are unacceptable with such a fantastic looking (and expensive) loco. Keep up the good work!

@@DaimosZ Thank you. 😁
@@mantissage100 you're welcome
Thank you! Hopefully the couplings are a one-off, but the mechanism and silly body design are the same for all of them!

I'm so lonely, on my own
Thanks Reno, everyone’s saying that! It is amazing that so many are preserved!!

I would like one of these I have seen them reviewed before and they look great. In terms of performance is sounds better than the mechanism on my super detailed Hornby class 08, which I am yet to add some modelling white grease to see if it stops the horrible grinding noise.
Thanks Ben! Yes I've heard a lot about Hornby 08s making noises - that's annoying!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Mine made a noise like that until I snapped the baseplate and rods and ripped out the contacts when I serviced it
@@lukeslocomotives oh dear. I have been told that applying a load of the modelling white grease on the gears will hopefully reduce the noise. It's a common issue with this model.
You should do a shunting vid with no couplings so that the buffers function, this would also look very nice
Ooh great idea - I'd love to try that!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I couldn't resist clicking on this video, the shunter looks amazing
Thanks Bubba - it is epic! :D
Thanks Lapis, I'd just about recommend it! And thanks for the info too! And sure, I could include that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Always been tempted by the Class 07 model, will have to look into getting one for the future. Quick question have you ever thought about reviewing 009 scaled models? (Narrow gauge). Heljan have made a few in the past and have been fairly tempted by them in the past. Fantastic video as usual!
Thanks Ben, they're certainly not too bad! I've thought about it - might be worth doing some time! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A competition between this and the Bachmann salty would be really cool! However the Bachmann salty is discontinued so you might have to do some searching on eBay. I was able to get mine as a Christmas gift a few years ago back when it wasn’t too much money, but I don’t know how much they go for on eBay now.
That would be cool actually - I'll look out for their Salty!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
as usual I value your reviews as you always present all the information I want about a model. albeit a little on the kind side, I mean a shunter unable to couple, sort of like a square wheel then. useful in rare circumstances at80 or less i'd but it for the detail and a lovely and unusual livery, but I would probably buy a shunters wagon and wire it to the "back" end and live with that compromise just to watch it haul a goods train around. but someone at heljan needs a dynamite enima! excuse language, but I dont know how to say that in milder terms, drastic action seems required at least one of their designers needs to be re tasked to sweeping thecar park perhaps? or mopping it dry in the rain
It's Ok for continuous running but if you wanted it for say a marshalling or goods yard with constant shunting, it would be a nightmare with those couplers. The hooks would have to be removed to just leave the bar.
Yeah you're right, a total nightmare!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The review was as usual superb with the technicality of the loco being brought into attention which I like the most besides the look of the gadget...but man this little diesel is slow as a tram!!!!!!!! I hope you're running this in normal volts. Were the dockyard locos really slow in real life???
Thanks very much! Yes I ran this on my normal 12v controller, at around 1/2 speed! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
G'day Sam. Great review as always. I'm a sucker for a loco with stripes. I haven't brought a new British loco for ages, I think that's about to change😁😎
Thanks a lot mate - ooh that's good news - all the best!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
