There’s really no need to “keep up” with the games that come out, it’s practically impossible really; just play whatever game you want even if it’s from 10 years ago
I mostly play older games on sale & games on Game Pass. It’s pretty hard for me to want to spend $60-70 on a new game when it will be better and more patched when it goes on sale later. Especially when I have over 100 games I haven’t played that i want to still.

I cleared out a bunch of old games but let some go through trade ins and giving some away I knew I wouldn't finish. i was really proud of myself and then Steam came into my life....

Late lunch Scoop! Time to turn my work computer off and spend the next hour watching the only and best gaming podcast available to kick off my weekend. It was a long week after the early Scoop last week. Nicely job!!!
You know what... Upon thinking about it... If you were to ask 10 year old me 'hey how you coming along with your back log'? I would have been like... WHAT THE HECK IS A BACKLOG??? and that's because as a kid I got like 5 or 6 games a year if I was extremely lucky and 2 to 3 on average... The idea of a gaming backlog only came into my lexicon around a year after I got my first job and my backlog has just become a constant background thought in the back of my mind 24/7 and now in 2021 in my thirty's... I'll never catch up but I'll never give up... I find now... I'm just gonna play the games in order of what I'm most currently excited about. Thanks for reading this fellow human gamer, much love
My best friend and I LOVED playing Lord of the Rings Return of the King together. I was usually Aragorn and he was Legolas. Just slicing through hundreds of orcs at the southern gate on repeat
I find the best way to deal with a backlog is don't build up a backlog in the first place, don't buy a bunch of games simply because they're on special - you'll save yourself a lot of time & money.
I’m in my early 40’s, so I had many of the same experiences as Daemon and Sam. The one thing that I used to get so excited over the most was my EGM delivery each month. Like when I grabbed my mail one morning on a Saturday to find my new issue of EGM with The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time on the cover! I can still feel that excitement I had looking at the cover stories from Zelda to MGS and Resident Evil! Subscribers would get their copies of the magazine earlier than the stores sometimes too, and you’d have info before most people. In a time before the internet was prevalent, magazines ruled new information for video games. The 90’s were such a great decade! Quite possibly the last of the magical decades before the millennium changed everything…
Just want to let Sam know that in 1984/85, Nintendo put out a "Deluxe Set" of the NES and it came with 2 controllers, the Light Gun AND R.O.B, along with 2 games, Gyromite and Duckhunt. I still have the box it all came in.

The way I take on my backlog is by what I feel like playing. I do get excited for current games out like Halo, Forza, Back 4 Blood etc. But its fun to just look at the games and just pick them and work on them slowly.
I've worked 60-70 hours per week since graduating college. There's usually at least 10-20 games per year I would like to play but only have time to finish 2-3 per year. I joke with my gaming bud that I'm going to have a mountain of games to play when I retire. The bad thing about modern games is you can't play them all from disc, and 20 years from now they may not be supporting games from this generation even if you have the system and game in good condition. I tip my hat to people that make games available for emulation. My old self in the future will need it.
