    Day in the Life of a Computer Science Student • Queen's University //
    Okay... it's actually 3 days in the life of a computer science student but I needed the familiar title haha. I was meant to do a day but then I ended up spending most of it sitting in front of my computer staring at a screen (classic!). That didn't result in enough content so I extended the vlog, hope you understand lol! Let me know if you enjoyed this video and leave any questions or comments down below! Lots of love and thanks for watching. It means a lot. x

    Coding is like a language, if one isn't taught it well, then the results (the output; applying what's been taught) will show as such.

      I HATED the CS labs at our school because they were in a really old and uninspiring building so I worked mostly from home but yeah, SO many hours staring at a screen. The process of coding is SUCH an emotional rollercoaster too. Like, when you're low and stuck on a bug for hours, you're REALLY low and you just wanna give up on life but once you figure it out, there is no better feeling in the world. So incredibly rewarding.

    How did you know that you wanted to do this program? Were there other programs that you might've been interested in? I am too, deciding which program to go into, as I have many interests.

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +11

      To be completely honest, I feel like people grow so much through their university/college years that it makes it extremely difficult to predict what interests you will still have at the end of those 3 or 4 years.
      When I was trying to figure out what field I wanted to go into, I thought about it realistically. In most cases, we get degrees and diplomas to learn and strengthen skills that can help us make a living. Looking at it from that perspective, think about all of the interests that you currently hold and figure out which associated uni/college degrees will be the most useful to you in the future. As in, which program will provide you with the greatest chance at earning an income (whether that is working for someone else, or for yourself) once you graduate?
      If you do it this way, even if you are no longer interested in what you studied, at least you won’t feel as stuck. Since you’ll be able to find employment in the chosen field quicker, you will be able to figure out and work towards what you actually want to do, without having to worry about how you’re going to make money.

      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +9

      Thank you and yes! One of the things that I had most difficulty with when I started my major was learning how to study for my computer science classes. Through high school, I mastered studying for subjects that required memorization (ie. biology, chemistry etc.) and when I started university, I tried to approach my programming classes in the same way. I would pore over the lecture slides and memorize everything on them, but I still wasn’t doing great on the assessments. I realized that it was because I wasn’t practicing enough. Coding is more like math. You can memorize the formulas (and in this case language syntax and algorithms) but unless you try working through problems yourself, you won’t actually know anything. If you prioritize practice, you should do great! :)

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +3

      Hi! That's a bit of a broad question but I'll try my best at answering... Academically, it was pretty good. You get what you put in. If you put in the work, you should get good grades, no problem. Some courses are definitely more difficult than others but they're not impossible. One thing that you should remember is to not base your self-worth on high marks. If you get a low mark at some point, don't worry about it because everyone does. From my experience, we're lucky in this field because unless you're going on to do a post graduate degree, marks don't matter all that much as long as you pass. When hiring, most companies care wayyyy more about personal projects and whether you know your stuff than they do about the numbers on your transcript. Some companies don't even ask to see your grades when hiring.

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +2

      Socially, it took me a couple of months to find a good group of friends because being a brown person, I was a minority (most people at Queen's are white). And it's not because people were racist and didn't want to be friends with me... It was because I just didn't relate and connect with a lot of the people that I met (since we grew up so differently, in different cultures). That being said, if you're open minded, you'll find your people. Are you planning on living in residence?

    • @hansitvarshney2036
      @hansitvarshney2036 5 років тому

      @@goldenagestreams Yes I will be living in residence. I also want to ask about the quip program as compared to co-op in others. How does it compare and are you able to get into Google, Facebook etc.

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому

      Nice. As long as you're living in residence, you shouldn't find it difficult to find friends. It was a bit more difficult for me because I lived off-campus during my first year. As for QUIP, I talked about it in my recent Computer Science Q&A video (at timestamp 13:49). I think that getting into facebook, google, etc. is all about how much effort you put in personally. Although I don't know of anyone that did their QUIP internship at a big company, I'm sure its a possibility. Most of the Queen's students I know who have worked at those types of companies did so after graduation.

    • @TacticTerrorGaming
      @TacticTerrorGaming 5 років тому

      As an engineer you will likely have less time to do personal projects since you will have more classes. Learning how to code is all about practice, so having time to do your own projects is nice. Whether you decide on computer science or computer engineering, try to take as many assignment-based courses as possible. A computer science degree is usually cheaper than an engineering degree as well, so if money is an issue, that is something to consider. Lastly, some safety critical fields of work require a computer engineer to 'sign off' on a piece of software for which they are responsible for any potential failures (e.g. flight control systems for airplanes). This can mean they may have a higher pay in these specific roles, but also take on higher responsibility and risk. Most applications of computer science are not safety critical, so this is generally a non-issue.

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +1

      ^ That covers it pretty well! The only thing that I can think of adding is that a computer engineering degree provides you with more information and experience dealing with hardware whereas in computer science, you’re pretty much strictly focusing on software. Queen's does something called the Queen's University Internship Program which is currently optional for computer science students. They offer an eight or twelve month internship and your experience will depend on where you are placed. As of the time I spent at Queen's, the internship counts as a replacement for the degree's final project. I didn't find it difficult when I was at uni. People in my course were quite supportive, and I was never made to feel less competent because I was a woman. However, now that I am experiencing working in the 'industry', men definitely assume that you know less than other men on the team do. They don't say it directly, but you can tell by their body language and tone. It can get discouraging sometimes but with time, you can prove people wrong with the quality of your work. And that feeling is VERY rewarding. :)

It can be difficult to find a group of friends if you don’t feel like you can relate to most of the people around you. • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +1

      Ryan NayR omg second year was definitely the hardest. You will be shocked at how easy third year is compared to second year - mostly because the courses transition from mostly technical to conceptual so they’re easier to learn. It becomes more about theory and optimization in third and fourth year.

      No, I didn’t. I only had a little experience with simple HTML and CSS in high school. The first time I actually learned basic programming concepts was in the first year of my major.

    do people actually do not go to class in upper years in CS?

    • @goldenagestreams
      @goldenagestreams  5 років тому +2

      From my perspective, unless the class is super difficult and you need all the exposure you can get OR attendance is mandatory, people don’t really go (at least not regularly). The numbers start out strong at the beginning of the semester then dwindle down to almost nothing by the end.
