Jimmer is one of the most brutally honest self critiquing athletes I’ve ever heard . This dude is so humble and so honest about his limits as a player and willing to acknowledge things I think people would be to afraid to say out loud in house by themselves, he’s saying it for everyone to hear and is completely at peace with his contributions to the sport and his limitations physically that held him back from being consistently on a nba roster year after year . Jimmer you are without a doubt one the best college basketball players I’ve ever seen in my life bud ! I’m glad you found this outlet to keep playing a sport that you mean as much too as it does to you for a lot of people . Good luck on the Olympics ! I’ll be tuning in bud !

It's also worth pointing out that "popularity" can be defined along varying degrees; there's no one single overarching metric for measuring it. Local popularity isn't just a small-scale reflection of nation popularity. The media lens warps the view of popularity to a significant degree, but also contributes the most to it. Baseball is the best example of this. So much has been made of baseball "dying", but it's death has only been experienced as a national media product. Local popularity of baseball is still often times much stronger than a city's corresponding NBA team (see the Cubs vs Bulls, Astros vs Rockets, Braves vs Hawks). However, as a national product, meaning how likely the sport is to garner views through the content machine, the NBA is much stronger. There's a distinct national NBA fandom, where narratives like MVP races, legacy talk, player rankings etc are participated in regardless of a fan's team allegiance. There are plenty of "teamless" NBA fans, who care about rooting for specific players and narratives. As a Seattle fan, I'm kinda one of them.
Comparatively, there's not nearly as much of that in baseball. Is it because it's an inferior product? No. It's because there are so many games and so many narratives and storylines to fill the entire season of just the team a fan roots for that there's often little appetite for nationally-focused content. I'm someone who cares about MLB, but most of my fellow Mariner fans genuinely don't know anyone outside of the Mariner circle. Most Mariner fans wouldn't know who Hunter Greene is, while most Reds fans wouldn't know who Logan Gilbert is. That's because those fans only really need to care about who is on their team, and each individual team has enough players and narratives to fulfill that content cycle.
As such, we have two different degrees from which one can measure popularity. The NBA and NFL are both well suited to the national content cycle, which means they get most of the air time on national media outlets, which in turn increases their visibility. Baseball can have equally strong local fandoms, but it's been eclipsed as a topic for the national content cycle. That means their visibility nationally is buried, despite remaining rather strong on the local level. It can simultaneously be true that many baseball teams are more popular than counterparts from other sports, but those sports leagues are more popular than MLB.

Ryen, the reason people ask you if you still watch the nba is because the product has become way worse in the last 10 years, and they want you to see that. I don't hate the NBA but Adam Silver has allowed the league to not care about the regular season. The style of 90% of nba teams is pick and roll with center while other 3 guys stand at the 3 point line. It is not very interesting to watch. Dunks in traffic never happen anymore. Mid range shots are rare. Post game is extinct. All of that makes for a worse product to watch. I watched this years playoffs. I'm a Celtics fan, and the Mavs would be my 2nd fav team. I thought I would love the finals. I was underwealmed. I just don't care about the sport the way I used to. If the NBA still had variety with teams and how they play, I might go back.

Basketball needs dramatic off the court storylines, legacies on the line, and massive star power to draw big tv numbers. People just would rather watch the highlights than a full game on TV it seems with the NBA.
Isn't that true for all sports? I think American football is meh, and only Brady or Mahomes may make me catch a game or the highlights. Same for baseball, but if there is Ohtani or Bryce Harper, I may catch a game.
I think baseball and football is more about the games and the teams involved. Not so much the individual players. 1 player can carry the ratings for a whole series in the NBA
@@cory_23 Baseball's most popular moment of the past 30 years was the home run chase, which was largely fueled by racial/nationalist tension. People were aghast that a foreigner (Sammy Sosa) might be home run king so were rooting for the All-American, white meat head (Mark McGuire) to beat him in the race. It was definitely about off field stuff.
@@leungsz Its different b/c they;re are less players in the NBA and the fans have more chances to get to know the NBA players (thus making stars). The Fans are closer, the players don't wear helmets or gear to hide their appearance. NBA has always been star driven while NFL is game driven. Thats one reason why people will tune in to any NFL game but only watch their hometown NBA, MLB, NHL team. This isn't exclusive for everybody but a safe assumption

I think it's funny that the perception of basketball VS American Football is that American Football is the pride of America when basketball is by far the export that's had the most international impact. Like I actually like the NFL and college Football but I've never once thought about actually playing it
football is once a week and easy to follow and has the tailgating element that makes it so much fun. It's become a sport you can watch with the whole family being entertained and idk if any other sport has that.

The nba doesn’t do a good job of presenting its history. Too many media members associated with the league shit on the 50’s to 90’s where the NFL aggressively does the opposite, same with Baseball. I would also say NBA coverage is unserious and way too casual, more analytical breakdowns are needed of basketball and less of whatever Stephen A does.
I'd argue the opposite, NBA media worships the past at the expense of the present. They shit on the 1950s and 1970s, but idolize the 1960s, 1980s, and especially 1990s and talk about how it was better back then due to fewer 3 pointers, more Americans players, more popular college basketball etc. MLB is similar, but at least they admit that Ohtani is better than all the players from those eras except Barry Bonds.
I’ve noticed a change in NBA coverage over the decades. In the 90s, Bob Costas, NBC era - the games were marketed toward a broader audience (They had promos during Seinfeld and Friends!) Now, particularly with ESPN, the target demographic is clearly younger and frankly, blacker. Hip hop music bumps in and out of breaks… commercials for chicken wings and axe body spray. At 40, I wonder sometimes - am I too old to be watching this? TNT’s NBA broadcast casts a wider net, however - it feels like everyone is welcome.

The tone is still very disparaging about soccer in the US. As an American I won’t listen to other Americans discuss the beautiful game unless they genuinely know what they are talking about. I know plenty of ppl abroad and at home that don’t need to wait for the rest of the USA to wake up and make their own silly conclusions. Side note the MLS will not be as big as the WNBA in 10 years

NBA discourse is colored a bit, in my experience/media consumption, by a weird phenomena where folks who CLAIM that they lived and died with the nba and love basketball more than anything else. But they’ll also tell you that the games are terrible, that no one tries, that nothing happens until the finals, WHILE also claiming that that’s why they haven’t watched/followed the game in like 8yrs. Like i feel like a lotta folks that might’ve just grown away from following the game try to put it on everyone else’s plate like it matters. Like i have a coworker who always complain about the state of the league but they also never can talk to me about the game the night before cuz they never catch it lol. Just interesting to me

It's because some sports have major stakes in their games than other sports. Out of 82 regular season games, the NBA can generate interest in less than 5% of them per team, the baseball situation is even worse because the game is boring and too neurotical to follow for casuals, while in Football every single game has stakes even just because of the high risk of injuries that can derail a team entire trajectory. Basketball has become a niche sport for geeks, my prediction is that Soccer will easily blow them out of the water since the MLS format is far superior as it is the appeal over immigrants

I think there are several things happening at once that affect sports. Baseball was first love, but for whatever reason I stopped following it when I went to college. I've always been a casual NBA fan. The pandering bubble jerseys made me even more casual. Football (college and pro) are what I really pay attention to, but I'm growing increasingly numb to them because of the changes.
What Russillo often fails to understand is the difference between a true criticism/conclusion of a sport vs attempting to make jokes at the expense of others. It is very disheartening when Russillo often has "low key respect" for being a shitting person or doesn't know the line between being funny and being mean. Grow up you're almost 50 dude...

I think NFL is pretty boring, but people just leave it on in the background. The rules have softened so much that you can’t hate on soccer, it’s equally pussy now. Basketball most casuals won’t watch entire games, but will see highlights on reels and shorts and has the biggest influence on culture. My hot take has always been that basketball, football, and baseball are all equally popular (in America) and sometimes, certain leagues are better at marketing or luck into advantageous marketing situations. Like MLB lucked into having Ohtani, NBA fucked themselves over by not requiring players to play in college for 3 years, NFL realized that making QBs the only position that matters is smart since QBs can't team up together.
But the NBA is always one or two players away from being the top league in America, and I think Edwards is one of those players. Wouldn't shock me if Cooper Flagg is other (race relations is powerful, and it sells in boxing and basketball).
If the World Series this year is Dodgers vs Yankees, I hope MLB plays some games on Sunday. I think those two teams matching up will outrate Sunday Night Football and turn the National Football League into the Niche Football League.

NFL is number 1 right now because it’s the best TV sport. Baseball isn’t a good tv sport and that’s why it dropped so far below the NFL. It’s nothing to do with the actual play of the sport IMO.

I think football is king on TV because of it primarily being on the weekend or games being once a week, fantasy (people watch redzone for this), and it’s pretty easy to understand watching on TV compared to in person with the 1st down line, etc. They have such a great presentation in between plays as well.

The WNBA "hype" is entirely manufactured. I can't be the only one who has noticed ESPN/Yahoo pumping out 4-5 WNBA stories daily lately. They're trying to strike while the iron is hot and cash in on all the Angel Reese/Caitlyn Clark drama. That's smart but untenable long term. This is the zenith of WNBA wherewithal within the cultural zeitgeist. Furthermore, it's still set to lose a record $50M this season despite the manufactured attention.
