    I had both, put 15k miles on each. Primary use is commuting to work and local dual sport rides but I have taken both on week long rides in Baja and the western U.S. I’m 6’ about 220 lbs and I would say both bikes got better after a respring and revalve. I had a local shop do both bikes with the same intended purpose. The Wr has the better suspension, the rougher the terain the better it handles. There isnt anyplace the suspension doesnt work. The DRZ, handles it up to a point then you are exceeding the capabilities of the suspension. On the road it works well. The DRZ has better options for a larger fuel capacity, up to 6.5 gallons, the WR has a 4.8 gallon option. The WR gets 10 MPG more so the fuel difference isnt so big. The WR felt cramped when I was loaded for camping, the DRZ has more room. In sand the WR rules, the DRZ is way more work. My shoulders are tired after a day of rough terrain on the DRZ. WR is a 6 speed and it cruises at So Cal freeway speeds while I would never try it on the DRZ. The WR had a programer and Pipe. For me, I stayed with the DRZ due to having more room and being field repairable which is huge in Baja or out in the desert. I can pull the carb if needed and there arent any sensors to go bad even though that almost never happens on yamahas. The DRZ desperately needs a 6th gear and a diet. The WR need another 200 CC unless you are happy shifting all day. The WR gave me confidence and made me a better dirt rider. They are both good bikes. If I was riding local trails and not hauling camping gear then it would be WR all the way.

    Having owned both, the WR250R wins hands down for sheer fun factor. You can wring its neck all day and drive it 75-80mph all the way home. Ran it with moded suspension and 14/52 gears. Ate up single track and highway miles too. Looking forward to Yamahas next release on the platform. Hopefully a 300-350cc. My 300L Rally will keep me smiling until then.

      +Bryce Piper You could say this for any manufacturer who has a 450. I would LOVE a KTM 450EXC with 25,000 mi valve checks and 3000 mi oil changes, but would it perform as well as my RFS, probably not.

      @chaindriven6464 8 років тому +8

      +P Kurk I have a 450 exc that I ride more as a dual sport. I don't race but I do push it occasionally. The valves are easy to check but they haven't moved at in in over 5000 KM (roughly 3300 miles) and the oil is so easy to change I would do it on the side of the road if I wanted or needed too. I wouldn't be frightened to dual sport the exc. It does take a little more maintenance and costs a bit more money but I enjoy it more off road AND on road. My DR just didn't have enough power or a sixth gear and this bothered me anytime I was going more than 55 MPH.

      Chain Driven I have a 450 exc as well and I love it. I guess my point was yes the maintenance is easy but it's still one more thing that's gotta get done that doesn't on some dual sports.

    Love my WR250R, it's all about riding, and riding, and riding, with no worries. It's not a racing bike or a real dirt bike. In fact it's great on twisty mountain pavement. I've got an older 250 for the rough stuff when there's a chance of dropping it. The WR can do multi day touring anywhere except the rough stuff. It's super smooth and has good power at higher revs. If you need lots of power do not get a 250, but if you want a fun all around bike that needs very little maintenance, the WR250R is top of the class. For me, fun is making it home in one piece and never having to pickup my battered bike, yet enjoying curvy paved roads and some gnarly trails as well.
    So if you enjoy thrashing your bike on really rough stuff, get an old beater DR400. If you want all around riding, go anywhere but go safely, get a WR250R. Heck get one of each.

Bikes like The CRF250L and the KLX250S feel really comfortable but these two feel uncomfortably tall. I rode both bikes. I found the DRZ400 to be very cumbersome to drive in the woods. It feels heavy and unmanageable. The suspension is obsolete. The WR250r felt much more at home in the woods to me. It was easy to throw around. I could ride faster and it didn't tire me out. Much better suspension on the WR as well.

    Beautiful shots, makes me miss colorado. I took my 100% bone stock wr250r up pikes peak last summer and did not feel any power loss. I never rode a drz400 but skipped it because I hate a carburetor, that's all we had a when I was a kid. The only other bike I considered was a KTM 690 enduro R but our only NE ohio KTM dealer is a mom and pops dealer where turn around time can be several weeks, just to get a new bike prepped was two weeks. I love my wr250r and just put 3k in mods, power commander + full FMF exhaust, 3 gal tank, LED, no toil air filter, removed AIS and servo, heated grips, hand-guards, new tires, heavy duty inner tubes and come other stuff.

    Ive owned both, and nothing gets me more fired up than when people argue about which is better. My consensus (having owned one WR and 2 DRZ's now), is that the WR felt a little better offroad and the DRZ felt a little better on road. Now, I actually owned all supermotos, but i would do stupid gardensnake-esque stuff on them so both would get plenty of time offroad too. The WR is nice with its lower weight. 6spd, and EFI, but it simply doesnt feel as planted as the DRZ does on the road. Im WAYYYY more confident on the street on a DRZ than i am on the WR. WR just didnt feel like it gripped as well. Could have been tires too, but Im actually still a slightly bigger fan of the DRZ. If both were the same price, it would be a tossup for me, but the DRZ's coming in at about $1500 less, you can buy a lot of awesome parts with that money saved.

    I don't know about the "cheap used DRZ" thing. In my area, used ones are fairly rare, and they generally cost enough that I would prefer to buy new. Of course, it's pretty much the same for the WR. I've actually been looking at a new KLX250. It would be great to be able to do back to back real world demo rides on them rather than just a few miles on pavement. I guess that's not going to happen, and I already have a cruiser and a sportbike, so it might be some time before I pull the trigger on a dual sport. I'll be keeping my eyes open for deals, and am not ruling out a used DRZ.

    Much too biased - clearly stated at beginning , but the many points in WR favour are glossed over or even questioned as not worth it.
    My first bike was the 400S, so I should be biased, but I then picked up the WR250R 3 years later (now on plated Honda 250X)
    The WR is MUCH MUCH better in dirt riding, esp tight single track - the 25Lb weigh difference is huge, even though downplayed here, and the suspension is absolutely superior, esp on obstacle ascending or descending. Both are similar on the road, with the DRZ faster out of the start, but the WR more fun flickable.
    if truly 50/50 and not too technical, pick up an old DRZ that hasn't been used much - they are steals. If you really want to have more fun on the trails, go WR250.

      @joytech23 5 років тому +7

      I had to pick between the two (400E or WR250R) and I chose the 400E for a few reasons.
      My riding style is very relaxed so comfort was a real big deal for me. The DRZ is very much a "lazy man" bike.
      The DRZ is more stable at highway speed, the bike's extra torque and more "forgiving" suspension makes easy work of trails or obstacles so less energy is spent on fighting the bike.
      The DRZ's weight is quite high up, so if you hit a rock at a weird angle it's less likely to upset your balance and any deviation is easy to correct for.
      When I ride with mates, their bikes are very "playful" (YZ120 and WR450F), they always look busy, carefully picking lines.
      With the 400E I take a seat, point it "in the general direction" and request power from the engine.

    • @GeneralNOH

      I think his end decision had a lot to do with the cost of bike, availability of parts and aftermarket. And obviously the power, a hopped up DRZ gets into the realm of mid 40hp. It can be difficult to even find a wr250r let alone at a good price. Youd have to be doing 70% dirt riding to really justify cost.
      the difference in price could be spent dialling in the DRZ suspension, you won't lose the weight but I'd guess a DRZ set up for your weight and riding habits is going to be better than the WR stock off the showroom floor or in whatever condition the previous owner had; even with the inherit benefits of the modern design
      Both great bikes, and im only watching because im having a hard time deciding which i like more. But simply due to availability and price ill probably wind up on the DRZ unless I sport a WRR at a killer price. The other thing is I already have a KDX which is far superior to both in off-road conditions and is a street registerable model but really no comfortable above about 50mph which is why i want a dualsport

      He did specify his bias. He pretty much stated all your points in the video and mostly agreed, even. (the 25 lbs, suspension, flickable). He made a different point about a WR obstacle disadvantage, though. I have a different bias, a 28" inseam (also, while my desires say dirt bias, reality says 2 hour highway commute bias). I agree with Liam that the price difference (eh used vs the new ones, lol) makes a big difference in having the extra $ to address related mods.
      wr250r 36.6 $6699 295 lbs
      drz400 35.04 - 36.81 $6799 317.5-321.9 lbs
      crf450l 37.8 😒 $10.4k 289 lbs 👀 I didn't realize so light, but excf territory.
      crf250l 34.4 5.5k - $6.3k 317.5 - 346.1 lbs
      xt250 31.9 $5199 291 lbs
      tw200 31.1 $4599 278 lbs
      dr200 33.3 $4,649 249 lbs
      ktm 390 adv 855mm aka 33.6614 in $6199 lower ground clearance & 348 lbs 😒
      At my height, dr200 range vs xt250 FI & HP vs just accept the offroad limitations of the 390.

    I ride a wr and agree with most things you say here. the fuel injection is a closed loop system which means it has a maf sensor but no air/fuel or o2 sensor which is why the altitude affected it. if someone buys a wr with the intent of the typical mods (pipe, airbox, power commander) they will be very happy with the results. I have zero experience with a drz so I can't compare but both have reputations for reliability. the wr really does become twice the bike once it's uncorked. as always cool video man. thanks

    I'll also note there is a wide ratio gear set (from ACT) you can buy for the DRZ. It leaves first alone, and widens the rest, supposedly makes it less buzzy on the road. I want to get one for my DRZ.
    That said, have you ever ridden a bike with a Lectron carb? It seems pretty neat, you tune it once and don't need to rejet based on altitude because it auto-meters the fuel. It's a carb that acts like EFI.

    If Yamaha made a WR400R it souls cost $8000-$9000. Putting it almost is KTM range. Which would be suicidal to there sales. And only then could it match the DRZ's power. Still far less that a KTM's. The biggest plus for the DRZ is it can be greatly improved both in power and suspension without breaking the bank. You can pick up a older DRZ for + or - $2000. Then if need be, pumper carb, full exhaust, and suspension for around $1000. I'm not talking Ohlins Suspension, but new fork springs and rear spring greatly improve the DRZ for offroad. So for around $3000 you can have a extremely offroad worthy dualsport that weighs around 320lbs and pumps out near 40hp at the rear wheel. That's a WINNER in my book!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the vidio's. Keep them coming.

    it's comical to hear the carb fans saying 'you can fix the carb' if it fail on the trail. Yah right, like all riders are above average bike mechanics and carrying all the tools. For the WR250R, I can carry an extra fuel pump solenoid (~ 2 oz) which cost $20 and repair a failed fuel pump with simple tools much faster than a pro can repair a failed carb, especially under harsh and dirty environment.

      @llshamelessll 4 роки тому +2

      The issue will be dirt in carb or dirt in injector or pump , shouldnt be an issue at all with proper fuel filter tho. As for mechanics, the fuel pump, electrical system and injector itself can fail. If you ride way out on your own a carb wins that argument for me.

      @@rocketj7449 regardless, FI never failed me either. If one is paranoid, one can bring along a spare solenoid, it's not expensive nor heavy. The drz400 is very dated, it need improvement in every dept, not just on FI. There is a reason why used drz400 is cheaper than a used wr250r

    As the owner of both a 2014 WR250R and a 1999 WR400F dual sport, I can safely say that Yamaha will have a huge hit if they sold a WR450R. Just use the same, slightly updated chassis as the WR250R, and drop a purpose-built 400-450 in it with slightly less power than the 450f, but the amazing service intervals of the 250R.
    I know it can be done, because my WR400f and WR250R receive nearly the same service intervals, and the engine on my 17 year old 400 has never been opened up except to check valves, which have never moved. That bike has to have at least 15,000 miles on it, wish I had an odometer to check though. It still runs like new.
    If they can make a WR450R with the same or slightly more power than my nearly 2 decade old 400, I would jump right in and buy one. You don't need ANY more power for such a bike. As it is my WR400 has a lot more power than the DRZ.

    Ok I've never ridden either of these bikes but have drooled on both. I have the inbetweener a Suzuki DR350SE. While it's not the best bike on either surface it's been the BEST BIKE I"VE EVER OWNED! My DR350 loves whatever I throw at it. It doesn't like 85 mph all day long but neither do I. We pick the nastiest back roads we can find and try to get lost and me and Suzi just love it. I would give my left nut for an Africa Twin but I think honestly small displacement bikes really are more fun! Wring her for all she's worth!!! It's all about the BRRAAAPP!!!

    Great comparison, well thought out points about both bikes. Light dual sport bikes are so useful and fun to ride. I would include the CRF250L and the mighty DR in your shopping list as well, or even a KLR as long as you recognize the limitations (more rider than anything). I think realistically you can leave out any bike with a 100 hour piston and valve replacement interval (KTM/Husqvarna), at least if you ride the longer rides I have done here in Idaho. Good Job EVERIDE!

    Thank you so much. I have been racking my brain for a dual sport bike. I tried a DR 200s, a CRF 250L, and I wondered about a DR 400Z. I am getting back into bikes and the 200 and 250 felt small in power. As a heavier guy I had several questions in my mind on which way to go. And you showed me I am better off with a used good bike than a new OK bike.

  • @olliepickworth
    @olliepickworth 7 років тому +3

    Hi Tyler. Great comparison. I have a 2015 R1200GSA and love it. Goes great on the road and is awesome on gravel roads but.......way too heavy and expensive when you drop it - and you will. As a result I have been looking for a small displacement bike that I can ride from my garage to the trails/dirt roads and have settled on the WR250R. Your comparison was great as were others I've watched (there are some great vids from MAD TV and adventure OZ - which is something coming from me as I'm a kiwi and we have a somewhat competitive nature when it comes to our Australian cousins). I've had a DR650 and didn't want a bike as large although I found it a great bike too. When it came down to it I really wanted a 250 and the WR was the best I could find. Almost went with the DRZ but the more modern package was what I was looking for. I have a bike with 125 hp so 28 hp from the WR will be fine. With an air box mod and GYTR muffler it should have a little more power as well. Some would say just buy the DRZ if you're trying for more power than 28 hp but another factor was build quality which seemed better on the WR. Putting on long range fuel tank as well which in NZ is necessary for the longer back road trips. Just my thoughts. As you say they are both great bikes and in the long run you have to pick one. Keep up the good work.

I am a fairly experienced dirt rider (XR250R) who is female, 5'8" and 160 pounds. I like the fact that I'm now 3 years in with my DRZ and I still don't have the skills to ride it as fast as it will go. +ColoradoDualSport I think the IT guy should do an FI conversion on his DRZ400. A 36 or 38mm throttle body (complete with injector $50-60 on ebay) from a Honda CBR250 would flow enough air and could be adapted to mount to the DRZ. Just need to up the fuel pump, add an O2 sensor and program a dedicated controller (this is where the IT part comes into play).

My friend rides the YZ250F and I often prefer his bike to mine. It would be nice to see Yamaha come out with a WR350R or something like that so I can have my lightweight nimbleness with an easier time cruising on the highway. My 1200GS is always preferred though. I was looking to get a 250 for weight reasons, but now watching this and finding out it only has 25 lbs. less than my DR, I'm not going to waste the money. Excellent video as always bro!! I have ridden both the DRZ and the WR250R and I found the cornering, suspension, and ergonomics superior on the WR. The DRZ just feels like a heavy to me. I think they are both great bikes though for your audience and new riders. I prefer KTM cause I am primarily a weekend or weekday after work warrior, and take no shame in that. The maintenance really isn't bad. Keep the air filter clean, change the oil and filter every 500 miles. It weighs less than both the WR and DRZ, has way more power, and handles like a dirt bike should handle. Hmmmm, I should really make a video on my bike, lol!! Haha, anyway, my experience on the Widow was weird cause your handlebars seemed super short and I just couldn't get comfortable. It makes it hard to accurately judge a bike when not set up for ya. Again, excellent vid bro bro!

      +The Slippery Wizard I went from a DR to a 450 exc and I don't understand people reluctance with the oil changes on the KTMs. Takes a socket set, a filter, half a quart of oil and 5 min. I haven't had any bikes EVER where an oil change was difficult at all I have have owned a Honda, Suzuki and KTMs. If you can remove and replace four or five bolts, you can change the oil in a KTM. Check valves before a long trip and no issues.

      +Chain Driven Oil changes are definitely easy, and for round-the-town dirt riding they're not a big issue. I think in the case of taking a long adventure on these smaller displacement bikes, though, the less you have to change the oil the better, just for convenience sake for traveling.

      @@eveRide I agree or valve checks as well, Less maintainence = more riding, or time for other stuff

    Where's the rest of the multi-state trip? I see clips of it here and there in the videos. I really enjoy watching all the videos of the bikes bouncing around getting some air. Its my escape from work when I cant escape from work.

    Great video again EVERIDE! Been watching awhile. I've had a DRZ400s for close to a year now. Made my decision largely due to this channel. Though other bikes interest me, like the 250's, I am happy with my DRZ. Took it out yesterday and got into some more challenging stuff. Almost scared myself as a beginner. The DRZ is a powerful bike. Used it for commuting mostly on 60mph highway and freeway. Did great. Glad I went with the 400. Could've got a KLR650 but I'm so glad I went with the lighter bike.... Anyway great vid, awesome channel. Wanted to encourage you to keep up the great work!

    I appreciate this review! As a 5'9" chick, I went with the WR250R for the "can you pick it up alone, slightly injured on a rough trail" factor and I absolutely love it. I've made the typical modifications to it and never felt like it's lacked power, although you're right about having to move through the gears. Also, living in Colorado, I wanted to try fuel injection out, as I wasn't happy with my KLX300 jetted for altitude, it just never felt quite...right. If I end up west of Colorado, I think you've convinced me to go the DRZ route :) Thanks again for the vid!

    someday I might get a smaller dualsport but everytime I think about spending the money .I work out how many tanks of gas I could fill up the KLR with that money and go explore ;)

      +Wandering Beast Very true! And for a big strong dude like yourself, I think the KLR fits the bill perfectly. Us tiny-armed weenies need the lighter bikes :)

    Guess I need to remove the Everide sticker off my WR! Seriously though, I don't remember you mentioning the stock 300 watt stator in the WR. Huge advantage for adv riding.

    Great vid as always. I just bought my first "dual sport" bike and did my first green lane on it. It was exceptional! Abosultely loved it! Fantic E Casa 250! 28hp and 103kgs.

    Everide, have you ever seriously compared the DR650 to other options? I keep expecting to see you try it. What gives? -A lot lighter than the KLR, ultra simple, reliable, with huge market support and upgrades available, and just a bit more weight than the DRZ.

      +SLFYSH Indeed. A well set up DR (including suspension work) would be an awesome adventure bike. Really regret selling mine, and a new one is definitely in the cards.

      I agree. When I was looking for a true dual sport I looked at DR650, 650XL and 690. My first DR was the most reliable bike I have ever owned. I went with the 690 for power but I am sure I would have loved the DR650 as well. And SOOO much cheaper.

    • @eveRide

      +Chain Driven I have wanted to ride/review a DR650 for SOOOOO long! When it comes down to it, it's a matter of affordability and what my friends have. If I could afford it, I'd go out and get a used one just to review and then resell (if I didn't fall in love, which... you're right... I'm afraid I would fall in love with it :) For the time being, I don't know anybody who's close who has one that I could review... but trust me, when I can get my hands on one I'm gonna make a video!

      eveRide ADV I have to agree. The DR series of bikes are amazing. I bought an 1986 DR in about 1990 and wound up selling it in 2015. I had that bike for 25 years because they are an amazing bike. Super reliable, bullet proof, pretty easy to work on (most of the time but there are a few annoying areas) and are super cheap to maintain. Even after 25 years, I didn't want to sell the bike but with four bike in the garage, my wife was parking in the driveway so one had to go. I eventually settled on keeping the wife and selling the DR!

    Great video man, I watched the whole video. You weren’t bias, we can all appreciate that. I agree both are great, love the look of the WR, but I think I’m
    Still leaning towards the DRZ...
