Excellent book...and it's all true..still relevant today...and now another one can be written about teachers, firefighters, local govt workers, social service professionals, retail management professionals, healthcare industry workers: living in their cars, working double, triple shifts, not able to afford housing, drowning in loans & debt...America needs to change now!!!
Gosh thank you Ali Velshi for facilitating this segment! So compelling. Two fab books and brilliant women authors telling much needed stories! Will purchase both; Maid and Heartland.
I've been dirt poor for a long time and have always done as much as I can (probably more than I am really able to) to help other poor folks. I have literally given away most everything I've owned over the past 25 years. The so called philanthropists don't make any where near that kind of effort (maybe with the exception of Bill Gates, but he's still one of the richest people in the world)
I own nickel and dimed, it’s absolutely right on the money!!!! I personally have 20000.00 in credit card debt from medical, home, dental, expenses! I’m 66 and will never pay that off! My father passed away with over 80000.00 in debt from medical and other expenses! There is absolutely no hope everyday. And I have been working since age 12! And yes still working!
People making minimum wage can't even afford to live in their car anymore. (Minimum wage won't even get you a junker car). There is a very valid reason there are so many living in tents under Freeway Overpasses and it's getting worse. It's outrageous and at some point, when food becomes unaffordable it's going to spill into the streets. When people lose all hope, they lose it. There is something very basic wrong with our Society when average people working full time can't afford a roof and food.

A book of this nature was written many years ago (1914) by English author Robert Tressell, its called the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. It seems that the progress made to make a more egalitarian society after WW2 have been eroded. The situation is similar here in the UK and probably throughout the Western world which is reflected in the lurch toward right wing nationalistic politics.
In some states they are either burning 🔥📚 books or banning them. Children, not able to read OR write! Defunding public education ensures a lower quality pool of workers who are also willing to buy anything they see advertised. Even fake food that harms their health. You need to be able to read in order to improve your life.
I think everyone thinks that YOU should getYOURSELF out of poverty. And the very worst are those that have benefitted from all manner of “help”, but wholly cow, you should not expect any help from them. But, I have to say, from the look of the people with money, I’d rather be poor.

Are you referring to the residents of MV who welcomed the 50 immigrants illegally kidnapped by DeSantis and sent to MV where they were warmly greeted, provided food, shelter and immigrant lawyers to support them? Yeah that was horrible. Desantis and abbot should be investigated by DOJ immediately.
@@VV-lz1xp - Yes, it was nice what they did for those immigrants on Martha's Vineyard. However, having done business on that island before, delivering an EMT ambulance, and being Black, I can tell you from experience, they are treating these people this way, just because of the situation. They will move these people off that island quick, fast, and in a hurry...

An excellent book, “Nickel and Dimed!” I lived the story myself in my younger years, working two minimum wage jobs together just to survive.
ditto
"Nickel and Dimed" opened my mind when I read it back in middle school, and I'm SHOCKED it's on a list of banned books
