    That’s our son! He’s the trombone soloist and 1st chair, and our daughter is in the trumpet section. Both Wind Ensemble members. VHS went one time to Grand Nats, won it their first time! They also wonTMEA HONOR Band, Sudler Cup And John Sousa Award, and then went on to be invited to the coveted International Midwest Clinc. The director allowed anyone who could march,to march. No one was left out. That’s their motto.

    If you want to continue with the larger (and ultimately more impressive) groups, Flower Mound 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, the Woodlands 2013, 2021, and 2022 are all a bit weirder shows that still have insanely high levels of difficulty and execution. Reagan was certainly good. But I would say that Vandegrift really peaked at BOA Grand Nats. They put in a lot of grind in that week leading up to their departure for Indy.

    • @johnnychikko3800

      @@joesekel7908 If Reagan would have decided to trek north they would have had another week to tweek and “peek” as well they would have no doubt taken the Eagle!
      So many Nats homers seem to forget that peeking another week for bands that may or ma not go to Indy is legitimate. Truth is trying to compare a program that peaked a week prior Nats due to season ending and trying to rank is illegitimate. Considering that any 2013-2023 SaSR program winner would be front runner for the Eagle
      Reagan would have no doubt taken the Eagle if given the opportunity.

    Lots of schools like to use matched because it's a lot easier to teach to younger students, even among mature-sounding ensembles in Texas. Believe it or not, "traditional vs. matched" is a very hot debate even among many professional percussionists.

      @505Hockey Рік тому +1

    I played in the Texas Tech snare line and we used match grip. Drumlines use match grip because you can naturally get a more even sound out of the drum from hand to hand.

    • @funlinerproductions7071
      @funlinerproductions7071  Рік тому +2

      I don’t doubt that it gets a more even sound. It’s probably a better method overall. Just so used to traditional grip even if it’s outdated

    • @johngallegos9710
      @johngallegos9710 Рік тому +1

      @@funlinerproductions7071, I know there were some corps in the early 2000's that used match grip as well at one point. SCV used it in '83, '94 and '05. The problem with match grip is the snare has to be mounted lower on the body so it can potential interfere with drill especially if you have to run or transition quickly from front to back. Even though it's not a natural motion, I prefer a line to play traditional for that very reason. Higher mounted drum means the left stick is more parallel to the playing surface and bottom part of the drum is out of the way for those crazy maneuvers.

    i think you should react to Ronald Reagan’s 2019 show, it used to hold a BOA super regional record before 2023 and has some very memorable monents (as well as a fun trombone feature)

    I think you are starting to see more and more percussion teachers decide traditional is just not worth the trade off of it being more difficult to clean and teach, especially in high school. I think there is probably a stigma of matched grip drum lines being inferior in some way, but as we jus saw that is certainly not always the case. I’m of the opinion that there is no real pedagogical benefit in traditional beyond looking cool and the chance for bad technique increases exponentially.

    As many have said, Reagan 2019 is a great band to watch as well. Vandegrift 2019 was not only beat by Reagan in the competitions they both attended, but also not a single ensemble judge(GE music and visual) put vandegrift above Reagan in competition. In fact, during the whole season, only one judge that sat in the box gave Reagan a placement other than first. (SA prelims) If Reagan had attended grand nationals that year, it almost certainly would have been a Reagan win.
    Also going to second Broken Arrow 2021. (Judging by the number of suggestions you are almost certainly going to do this one).
    Both of these shows may not be as pleasing to the DCI fanatics, but they are both immense crowd pleasers and General Effect driven shows. In BOA, GE wins competitions.
    Last wild cardI'll trow in because not enough people are gonna ask for this one is Flower Mound 2016. The last show to clean sweep BOA SA finals. In fact, any Flower mound show other than 2019 will be a fun watch.

    Indiana bands - Avon or Carmel

    • @johnnychikko3800
      @johnnychikko3800 Рік тому +1

      Indiana in the 90’s and early 20’s absolutely but recently Avon and Carmel have bought into the BOA adjudication metrics. Visual visual and visual only! So much so that ISSMA adopted BOA similar sheets.
      In order to try to capture more revenue and regionals from other states with less of a competitive landscape BOA adjudicates heavy on visual innovation. Basically you can perform a intermediate variation of Doxology 100 (as Carmel often does) but as long as you have a solid designer and can visually execute then BOA rewards handsomely. Most fans fell asleep during Carmels 2022 Nationals show but It scored amazingly.
      The argument these past 2 decades is that BOA overly rewards designers (adults) while calling it GE vs what the kids as a whole bring to the table. Avon, Carmel and most of the Midwest have bought into the BOA philosophy imo. Although I have loved what Castle has attempted on the field lately!
      Case and Point: If you listens to Hebron 2021 then listen to Carmel 21 you will immediately hear the difference in music innovation, demand and execution.
      In Texas music is still king!
