When they first met, Canute wouldn't talk to anyone except his aide. The longer time he spent with Thorfinn (and the more Thorfinn annoyed him), Thorfinn became the other only person Canute would share his thoughts with. Years later, nothing has changed. Canute still doesn't speak his true mind nor act his true self around people. No one except Thorfinn.
for people who will say Thorfinn became a coward, no, he just did what his ancestors did, they ran away from the war, that's what Thors did in the first episode, he ran away from the war, and let's be honest, it's not out of fear that he ran away, as Thorfinn told Canute "I run away, for my sake, and for yours"

@@barbozo Whilst that Vinland Saga was great, the story has evolved to be about Thorfinn and pacifism. I miss it too but I also appreciate what we have now
Canute was neither shy, nor deceptive, nor even regal. He was just having a good time talking to someone he sees as a friend and who he hoped would understand his reasoning. In the end, they realised they have a similar goal but are trying to get there via different roads.
@Impastolabusta that's not the point though. The idea is that it's rare for all options to REALLY be exhausted before violence. And walking away is indeed one of those options.
Canute laughing at Thorfinn’s “plan” makes light of the fact that his plan was basically “Just say no. Legally he can’t take the farm without consent.”
Nah, literally it was just "could you please not take the farm." after being threatened he said he wont fight, he will run and make a place for refuge. It's a bit more complicated but Thorfinn shows resolve in his solution, a certain strength. It makes it more peaceful. It takes off weight from the two, and Canute understood that.
"So you walk up to him, look him in the eyes and say 'please don't take over this farm'" "And that'll work?" "He'd have to be awfully evil if it didn't"
More like it makes you feel as if you're strong enough to overcome your problems, making them feel as if they're not there. We need to wield the fleeting emotion and take action before it disappears.
The thing to note is the fact that Canute isnt laughing at Thorfinn but laughing at this whole situation they found themselves in. He’s been in so many battles at this point that the fact that this whole situation is gonna end like this is hilarious
It hits harder when you realize that this is how Canute *wishes* it could be. Just as simple as telling others there's no reason to fight, and that peace can be the best option for everyone. No bargaining, no threats, no leverage, just understanding. Canute obviously hates the methods he has to use to achieve peace but he truly believes to do so any other way would be doomed. And yet, here's the man from his past doing exactly what he wishes he could. It's hilarious in a very, very sad way.
I feel like Canute... needed to hear this from another person. He had become so used to people only trying to bargain with him or fight him for whatever their reasons or intentions were, that he was just in total shock and awe at this whole exchange. Seeing Thorfinn again after so long, seeing how he had managed to change for the better, despite how he used to be... he _needed_ this; the fact that it came from Thorfinn making it all the more potent. It was such a breath of fresh air to him. And seeing Canute finally smile and laugh, just like Thorfinn was finally able to... it hit me so hard. Shed tears several times during this episode. Just... beautiful writing, through and through. I can't praise this season enough.

Some COLD and distant having trouble trying to grow, but now WARM and caring for others who has grown and bloomed into a warrior his father and askeladd would be proud of.

@@diegoruiz8342 No announcement yet, but the story is only halfway through, there’s a good season or 2 of material left to adapt. We saw glimpses of Season 2 on the last episode of s1, so we’ll have to wait and see
Truly Thorfinn's character is on another level. This series highlighted all the scenes where he acknowledges the things which he used to reject in the past.
People don’t realize the reason Canute laughed is because Thorfinn; the boy he knew as a raging violent revenge-bent killer, is now here negotiating for peace and doing everything to avoid conflict. It almost seems absurd to think about when you remember the last time they actually encountered.
I am anime only but based upon the animation/art for when Canute was laughing and also the voice of the voice actor I got the feeling he was "refreshed" by Thorfinn's words. Thus his complete flip, it was like he was battling with the ideology of what makes a King that his father espoused and his own ambitions and goals then Thorfinn comes in and is like "Im about to ruin this mans whole career" and he was completely disarmed by it.
Thorfinn and Canute are still unlikely friends, love to see that. I wasn’t sure what the interaction would look like, but this was better than anything I could’ve expected.
Vinland Saga's 2 finales are literally making me cry at both ends of the spectrum. Askeladds' death and this episode. I'm wondering if this is the thematic end of the arc and next episode is our reward for getting to the end. Holy catharsis
What a life changing anime! Vinland saga never stops exceeding my expectations every single time. The next episode is Thorfinn's reunion with his family. I just can wait 😫♥️♥️
I love how this whole conversation turned into a discussion of philosophy, not between a warrior and a king, but between two old acquaintances who understood each other at a fundimental level. An you can tell that Canute *needed* a talk like this and in that laugh you can tell that, without even trying, Thorfinn restored a part of Canute's humanity.
The character development for Canute is really good . In my Thorfinn and Canute are the best characters of the show so far . I can't wait to watch the season finale next week 👑👑👑 .
Thorfinn uses Canute's knowledge of his character to convince Canute that he is committing immoral acts. This is more persuasive than any bargain or threat someone could make. Such a powerful scene.

As this anime progress it gets better and better like the storyline is really well written. Goes into so much from a man devoured by rage to losing it and now he seeks peace and a place where there’s no war or slavery it’s so dam Good my favorite part is where he’s like I have no enemies like wow he’s truly an amazing Man.
I didn't understand this scene when it came out but I kind of understand it now. Canute didn't laugh at Thorfin, he laughs because he got relieved. Thorfin and Canute were in good terms until Ragnar's and Askelad's death. Canute doesn't afraid of Thorfin nor does Thorfin is afraid of Canute. But Canute was wary about Thorfin having a grudge against him still but he completely changed and wisened up during the exile.
Anime have the power to convey messages and describe real life situations , it just impresses me every time. So beautiful and deep. Am I a warrior ? That message is the kind of the same message J.Krishnamurti tried to conveyed to older generation in the times of war. Even the basic conflict, basic discrimination lead to aggression, either psychologically or physically....I am not a warrior....
Thorfinn approached Canute with no tricks, no intent to harm, no pride. It must have been so refreshing for Canute to hear somebody so thoroughly honest and good-natured request something of him without any ulterior motives.
The most beautiful anime I've seen. The story is amazing and the character devolpments between multiple characters. Thorfin, Snake, Canute. Olmar made me especially happy he witnessed war and he immediately started to become a better man the ideology of "I'll make a place where I can tell people to live" was so beautiful and how they mentioned people yearn for death to finally be at peace really got to me. It's funny because I see a resemblance between Russia and Ukraine. Russia being like canute imo... I really hope we get a 3rd season.

@@diegoruiz8342 No announcement yet, but the story is only halfway through, there’s a good season or 2 of material left to adapt. We saw glimpses of Season 2 on the last episode of s1, so we’ll have to wait and see
@@diegoruiz8342 at the end of season one, they basically showcased S3 characters only. So that would be the plan.
Every father should show this anime to their sons.
Truly Thorfinn's character is on another level. This series highlighted all the scenes where he acknowledges the things which he used to reject in the past.
I don't care what anyone says. The second season of Vinland Saga is one of the best seasons of television I've ever watched.
Get off the pookie bro bleach thousand year blood war, my hero, jjk, demon slayer, DBZ, 1piece way better than this

Those whose been to war can truly understand what Thorfinn means by running.
This anime is ... idont know what it is but i'm glad that i could see something like this in my life.
Thorfinn is the type of person to hop on ranked in Mortal Kombat and ask you to put down your controller so y’all can talk about your day.
From his senior to his colleague to his friend.
@@projectomnia1997 yes, indeed
The seiyuu clutch it here, you can truly feel how canute's laughter is of relief
Anyone who thinks Thorfinn is a coward or Canute is evil, is missing the point of the story.
Thorfinn and Canute are still unlikely friends, love to see that. I wasn’t sure what the interaction would look like, but this was better than anything I could’ve expected.
The last episode is peak anime … respect to the author
It’s honestly interesting to see him laugh after all those years, feels like he suppressed too long
Vinland Saga's 2 finales are literally making me cry at both ends of the spectrum. Askeladds' death and this episode. I'm wondering if this is the thematic end of the arc and next episode is our reward for getting to the end. Holy catharsis
The only subtitles I have , there are no subtitles for this episode in England 😭😭
When he realized this was real and not just some tactic his brain broke lol
The character development for Canute is really good . In my Thorfinn and Canute are the best characters of the show so far . I can't wait to watch the season finale next week 👑👑👑 .
They are the best duo in TV production history for me. Even surpassing Emiya Shiro vs Emiya Archer for me.
Canute has a really nice laugh.
Thorfinn will be the best MC of 2023
That was soo cute
Thorfinn uses Canute's knowledge of his character to convince Canute that he is committing immoral acts. This is more persuasive than any bargain or threat someone could make. Such a powerful scene.
I finally understand when Bruce Lee said: "You win every battle that you run away from..."
Even tho my life kinda sucks rn and i dont know how my life will be in the next months this show motivates me to keep going and take nothing negativly
Lol same
Whole episode broke me into tears
i feel like this scene portrays a mix of respect between them. both know what the other is capable off and they agree to disagree
Huge shoutout to the comment section for recommending me to start watching Vinland a couple of weeks ago.

He seems happy to see thorthin and see the man he has become
Didn't expect Thorfin to pull out the ultimate Joestar technique.
Joseph joestar would be proud

Such a good story. I loved every moment.

Canute is not actually bad guy he just wants solve the problems with his way
That's... true. But the methods he uses are cruel.
So a understood villian

Love how these two characters are often paralleled and how they both went from being one-note in Season 1 to incredibly captivating in Season 2.
A Man does not fight for recklessness. A real man realizes there is no need for fighting and foolishness. Thorfinn sees this now
I didn't understand this scene when it came out but I kind of understand it now.
Canute is so fine ❤❤❤

Tips: rewatch ep 1 and then ep 23
You will see why vinland saga is one of the best story and a masterpiece
Hint: crave it .
Get yourself a man/woman who looks at you like 1:55
1:56 Thorfinn You really are the closest thing i had to a friend.
This entire episode was 10/10. Exceptional, convince me otherwise.
Next episode thorfinn goes back home. Oh boy tears are gonna flow
Thorfinn? Who's that? 😓
Thorfinn literally stopped an invasion by asking nicely
I really hope we get a 3rd season.
when i saw this videosTumbnail before the Episode , i thought Thorfin suggested the Hnefatafl Game :D
