I watched Tanner Leatherstein rip apart a Chanel WOK in caviar. There was some kind of disgusting plasticy coating all over the caviar leather. He determined that the leather itself was probably worth in total $90 (and that was a generous estimate). It turned me right off of Chanel. 👎🏼

Agreed - There are too many leathers with the plastic coating (standardized leather). Chanels caviar leather is definitely one of the ones with a thicker coating. I'd put it side by side with Saffiano and then Empreinte & Epsom a few tiers above as it's not as thickly coated.
Natural leathers like Maison Margiela's (Glam Slam bags), aswell as Celine's calfskin (swift style calfskin) don't have any plastic, and you can really tell. It feels so much more luxurious and are top tier along with Hermés Togo and Chévre Breteuil leather.

Super Dacob had an interesting take on this. He speculates that Chanel will start lowering the prices on seasonal pieces as a way to drop prices since luxury handbag sales have slowed due to insane price hikes. These are one-time releases so you can't compare to the previous prices.

IMO People who care about the price increases already moved on to other brands. Thats why the reaction is less than it used to be. IMO People who still buy the new handbags from boutique are not driven by quality first. They are driven by brand first. Its a different kind of customer with significant disposable income.

"Stuck in this time of quilted flap bags" 😂 Loved that. What an insightful video, Jess! Love the fire and you're spot on! I have never owned a Chanel so it's easy for me to now stay away, despite appreciating the history with Coco, the fashion, etc. As consumers, we need to demand quality for these bags that cost as much as a car. If there is a bag that I love aesthetically that is also of the highest quality (Joseph Duclos, Delvaux, Hermes) I am going to put my money into those, at least feeling like I'm getting superior product, even if still overpriced (it is still just a bag). There are limits to the "brand equity".

Jessie, I totally agree with you on Chanel. Honestly, since Karl L has gone, Chanel has lost its pioneering designs, they used to lead the whole fashion industry every season in hair, makeup, clothes etc. It’s bad, the latest with the stupid big hat! What’s that about? 🤦🏽‍♀️ I notice they are now even switched off the comments section. I went into Chanel boutique recently, I did try on a few bags. I have been buying from Chanel boutique since 2008, I have never had 2 SAs trying to “persuade” me to buy a bag. Never happened. I have plenty of Chanel bags, bought when the quality was excellent and they still are today! Comparing to the new one, oh dear, the SA told me they now have 5 year quality warranty, they will fix that for me. But, why the hell I pay so much, I still need to waste my time to get it fixed. Anyway, i don’t know who is it they are targeting for? Clothes are crap, zero imagination, bags are bad. No idea 🤷‍♀️

Are we (the handbag community) not bored with talking about price increases and decrease in quality yet?
I mean all brands are increasing their prices, and there will always be a question about whether it is worth it or not, based on quality, style etc.
Buyers or ‘handbag lovers’ have the ultimate decision whether to buy the bag or not regardless of a price increase or what a brand pushes 🤷🏽‍♀️

I agree on both ends. A few years ago, I was sick of all the negativity with price increases when we all know it happens and luxury is expensive. There should be no surprise there. All brands go up. The “goodbye Chanel” videos were the equivalent of “unfollow” on social media. 😂 Everyone wants to announce their departure.
But at this point with Chanel, it’s just sad to see the steep difference from price and quality. They just don’t match. Am I guilty of still buying? Absolutely! Show me a cute Chanel in a beautiful color and I’m there ready on drop day. But at some point, shoppers will get tired of quality defects and choose to spend their money elsewhere. That’s how I am feeling at the moment if the rumors are actually true this time.

I won't buy new Chanel at this point. Vintage pieces have much, higher quality. Hermes is expensive, but the quality is there. Out of my price range, but no one talks about Hermes having a lack of quality.
People who aren't wealthy would be better off sticking with middle of the road, high-quality products, having a bag made for them from high-quality materials or getting bags from brands like Hermes, The Row or Loro Piana if they want to spend more money on new bags and get the quality they paid good money for.

(Shady stuff)Sorry for leaving so many comments. I came across a Chinese seller that makes high replica exact same materials. She said she works with the factory’s all over the world that make designer pieces so she said because workers aren’t compensated enough that some make their own stuff in secret and sell it off to people. Which is scary they’re turning on their own employers to fund Chinese espionage operation to Canada and it’s all westerners buying those items. The way she worked was you find a bag you want could be any design even seasonal and she will find a contact/maker to make it happen.which leads me to believe they are just producing genuine articles on demand but the seller just makes a profit by selling it a small mark up of the manufacturing price. I could’ve gotten a Louis Vuitton crazy monogram keep all for 250 Canadian. And you can point out details to the makers to make it so close to the real thing. I’d rather buy stuff with no logos and give my money to honest people. Hope this all makes sense have a good day

I think Channel knows the jig is up and they will no longer be considered aspirational bags anymore. The quality of their handbags has been decreasing however, there will always be a subset of people who dream of getting a Channel bags-the quilting and tweed makes it instantly recognizable. I am sure they are doing quite well in Asia. So, they will increase the prices before everyone walks away.

Chanel was never in the cards for me, but it’s really wild how their response to customers’ complaints about quality was to double down on prices and not address the manufacturing issues. They might be luxury, but they’re not luxurious, and they’re definitely not something that you can wear for your whole life anymore.

I think Chanel, especially the flap bag is over saturated especially in places like Fashionphile. Takes away the exclusivity/special part of owning one. I don’t have a Chanel bag because of the high price, and I used to really aspire to save for one but with the continued price increases, unless I happen to get one in France, it’s not going to be worth it for me.

I am getting to that point of being over Chanel. It sucks because I love to chase the seasonal colors. It’s much easier to get a beautiful pink Chanel than a pink Hermes for example. But, I have known for some time that the C bags have to be babied to stay nice. They are very sensitive to regular wear. Knowing that plus the price going up, it just doesn’t seem practical to me to keep spending with them.
They do have great shoes though. Strangely, you would think the shoes would not hold up well with wear being on the feet. But I find the shoes to be very well made and comfortable. Why can’t the bags have the same reputation?

Chanel will do what works for them. They endured decades and will probably continue to do so even when we are no longer around to see it :)
I agree that the new prices are out of reach. I think the quality of the non Classic or seasonal bag is probably less, they look flimsy. However, I haven’t had a quality problem with a classic flap (all from 2020-2022).
I also don’t think Chanel classic flaps has a loud design. The CC is quite small. It’s just that people recognize the style and brand so you can’t call it quiet.

I stopped buying Chanel around 2014. I was in store and was informed of the new 5 year limit for many repairs. I was about to go on a waitlist for a bag but left and decided I was done. I cannot justify spending that much for a bag that has an expiration date. That means it can't be handed down. It's not an investment if in 5 years, even the original owner cannot refurbish it inside and out as needed. Chanel made it fast fashion really. They want you to keep buying but then disposing which goes against what is supposed to be heirloom quality products. They are banking that customers will remain desperate to have and be seen with a Chanel item. I think they overplayed their hand. Don't buy so they learn they need to offer amazing quality and aftercare for those prices

I was watching a fashion historians video on Chanel and they were saying she never did the Little Black Dress etc, but most of what people attribute to her in the modern day were other designers works that you may not hear about. She's just been glamourized and propagandized so much, when in reality she wasn't much of a sensation except for Chanel no 5 which was her money maker. In reality she was nowhere near Dior, Balenciaga or Schiaparelli levels of influencing the fashion industry.
She was apparently just good at gossiping but absolutely hated her workers and would do anything to stop them from gettting a higher quality of living to the point of firing them all when they tried to unionize. (And she was extremely problematic besides that one thing).
It would make a lot of sense if Chanel went full circle to again hating the working class.
    It's really worth looking into.

I believe the best time to buy from any brands is when the founder is in charge often after the founder dies the company is sold to a group of men making decisions and they find ways to maximize profit for a return on their investment. It should all dies and make room for new talented designer that take care and pride in their craft. Like chanel wake up it’s your bloody craft go after it
