I'll be going over this game. It's an instructive Tarrasch Defense-like system against the Jobava, and in theory, it should work. The move order seemed really spot on and now I've seen one dangerous line to know about. Thank you for showing us this game. Please share another when you can that shows us what more Black can do with this position.

I play the Jobava almost exclusively as white for the past 6 months or so, on the weekends, I play over the board at the bar and there’s this one guy that I always play against and he just sits there and is like “you’ve played this against me 100 times and I still don’t have an answer for it“
    It’s definitely a spicy opening

This was very instructive for me too. I paused after e5 to see what I would do and in the nh5 line I saw the king on g6 holding the knight and assumed it was losing so played ne4 to give up a pawn instead and actually lost since I didn't see that after Bb7 the rook on d7 can capture since the knight hangs on c6. Tough stuff, thanks stejpan!

    My go to vs the Jobava - 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d6 3. Bf4 Nbd7 4. e4 e5 5. dxe5 dxe5 - Stockfish 16 has Black equalising if Black plays 6. Be3 and Black is a little better if the Bishop moves anywhere else.

Your setup is very safe but also your opponent kind of allowed it by playing 5. Bd3 and not the aggressive 5. g4, exploiting the tempo loss on 3...a6. As a Jobava London player, to me the most annoying response is a very early c5, like on move 3 (against which you can play e4).

I think c4 is hard to play because it’s almost always bad in the QGD. Idk why. Very interesting. I play the jobava as white and I know the computer usually likes c4. I just don’t understand why.

I have been on the black side of that too with poor results. Maybe black can go into the d6, g6, Bg7 systems. What do you think of that set-up against the Jobava?

      He's already committed to d5 unfortunately.. a good alternative is 1.d4 d5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Bf4 c5, worth exploring those lines:)

As a learning jobava player, these lines transpose to a pirc defense, often with some h-file attack for white, if black isn’t careful. It’s an option, but there’s more fighting, sharper lines in plans where g6 is paired with d5 like a grunfeld.
