Telegram isn't actually that encrypted. The only encryption is person to person(E2EE), and its turned off by default. I would like to make an experiment, although it's very risky. Putting child abuse aside (because that's universally and objectively punishable) what would happen if I post some extremist or downright crazy content on WhatsApp? Should we arrest the postmaster if someone sends drugs in the mail? No?
Exactly
Actually we already arrest post office workers that knowingly allow for the mailing of illegal goods.
This is so out of touch. Normally if the company is sanctioned I guess it doesn't involve the owner being arrested, unless the commercial activity is clearly criminal, I guess.
There are problems if customs finds that the postmaster is helping ship drugs internationally. Or if the DEA/FBI finds that the postmaster doesn’t care and lets drug traffickers to openly send drugs without any restrictions.
If the Postmaster is aware (or even if not aware) that illegal stuff is at the post office and if the authorities request these potentially illicit goods for inspection and the post master refuses, then the PM participants in a crime. Pavel Durov actually acquired French nationality in 2021 through an exceptional procedure: the so-called "eminent foreigner" process. Initiated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, it grants French nationality to "a French-speaking foreigner who contributes through their eminent action to the influence of France and the prosperity of its international economic relations". 3 years later France arrests the guy for doing the very same "eminent actions" they'd granted him citizenship for 3 years earlier. As usual Krystal with the authoritarian interpretation of anything. If someone posts CP onto a Telegram channel -- it's THE COPS' job to go after them, not Telegram's. That's because of royal families and old wealth catch up.
Sagaar starts with a good premise then says things that are erroneous. It's true that in Europe there is no equivalent to the first amendment but it doesn't mean there is no due process. Basically there are "hate speech laws" in place and you get judged according to those. In the case of France there is a law on "incitement to hatred, violence or discrimination" whether it's on the basis of religion, race, sex, sexuality etc. Also you don't get your citizenship removed just for such offenses. For that you need to be a binational who is essentially acting as a foreign agent against the interest of France on the behalf of your second nation. You can't have it removed if you only have french citizenship as well.
Not saying I agree with laws policing freedom of opinion at all btw just giving some context and clarification.
Typical Sagaar L. I also like how he never mentioned that SCOTUS ruled that that the White House does have a right to censor people on social media.
Moreover, the First Amendment only prevents Congress from changing or adding laws in regards to speech, congregation etc., it doesn't stop the Executive branch from doing anything.
It's also important to look at cultural speech in addition to legal speech. Cancel culture is anti-free speech and it's been pretty prevalent in America. People lose their livelihoods as well as get shunned from society without facing repercussions from the legal system.
Arrest warrant was issued 30 minutes ahead of his landing ,so Durov did not know he is wanted, and by the way French citizenship was given to him as a specially deserving foreigner

It's not hypocritical for the UK because they don't have free speech guarantees and they never said they did. SOME Western nations have it and others don't. It's a pretty mixed bag.
@@anthonytwohill9726I’m surprised free speech has not been fought for and attained in the UK.

Presumption of innocence was enshrined in French laws in August 1789, about a century before the US, but it does not exist there!? How ignorant do you have to be to make such a statement. Presumption of innocence does not mean that the authorities cannot detain you if they suspect that you may have committed a crime. Under French law, you can be detained for 24 hours (which can be prolonged twice in particular cases (murder, terrorism)). Beyond that point, you have to be either released or formally charged.
Is that before or after the Reign of Terror that occurred in 1793?

Sagaar's vitriol against France says a lot about his lack of nuance.
Bro nobody likes France.
he starts with a good premise then says things that are erroneous. You can't have it removed if you only have french citizenship. Not saying I agree with laws on freedom of opinion at all btw just giving some context and clarification.
I know there's some lack of clarity about the charges. To the extent Durov's being held on charges of permitting other people to post, communicate, and coordinate, that means he's being charged by police for not being police. That's weird, unnecessary, & redundant.
There is free speech in some countries in Europe, it’s not a monolith. Would be nice if that’s remembered by Americans
[citation needed]
Ok which countries remain w free speech?
Delusional Europe is exactly a monolith! It is called the EU and if a counties don’t do exactly what they are commanded to do they get treated like Hungry has to destroy their sovereignty! EU is a cancer!
No there is not. The EU Constitution chapter on Free Speech has the words "expect and exception" more times than "freedom"
It’s a fundamental right in the EU generally, but counties are very much sovereign still.
Since I’m Dutch, I’ll just keep it at my country. Here’s the entire constitution:
www.government.nl/binaries/government/documenten/reports/2019/02/28/the-constitution-of-the-kingdom-of-the-netherlands/WEB_119406_Grondwet_Koninkrijk_ENG.pdf
It’s not as clear cut as in the US constitution, but free speech is very much included in multiple articles. The generally accepted free speech article is article 7.
There is a saying that I read once that goes somewhat like this: In The Netherlands we talk about having freedom less, and instead enjoy it more.
The last comment was the best takeaway here. "Stay away from France"
Krystal Ball is the Crystal Ball into the minds of the Authorotarian left.

Apps like that can be used to stop fighting and stop corrupt governments from working without immunity.
If they're telling you about it, it's already been compromised!
The neutral carry point is missed without mentioning they 100% monitor all telephone interactions.
If you trade safety for freedom, you deserve neither
If you liked Vietnam you can thank a Frenchman.
I believe he already has reached a deal with France about getting “arrested”. It’s still better to stay in French prison than any other country prison
I don't care if my government spies on me. If you're not doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to worry about.
fascists should be censored, saagar. that includes you
Krystal doesn’t get that Telegram’s founder is brave for supporting free speech. We need more people like him.
