Finger Spins is a yoyo trick commonly performed in horizontal play which involve catching the yoyo on the edge of a fingernail and letting it spin, allowing all kinds of impressive catches, spatial manipulations, and other types of yoyo tricks.

I've always looked for yoyos that have a dimple for fingerspins, but I tried one on my superstar, which has a bowl design, and it was awesome. in my opinion, get a yoyo like a skyva or the Atlas that has a dimple just to learn on, and get a bowl shaped throw after you get really good at them.
i love my flip side. my favorite value throw to take out. I've learned a lot of string tricks with that throw.

Update. It seems that creating the bind has been the biggest struggle for me with this one. Not sure why, but I’m really fascinated with this one. Now, working on doing it with the opposite spin!

A bit late to this but a new string could help with getting it to bind if the string has too much wear I find binds slip more then I like with normal sized string that is.

When I try to do a finger spin with the atlas, as soon as my finger nears the center it messes up and falls off. Am I doing something wrong like not throwing it hard enough or what. And once I land the yoyo on my finger do I need to move it or is it better to just keep it completely still?
Would a yoyo with a rotating cap (a large hubstack that covers the diameter of the yoyo) design be good for finger spins? (Ex. MagicYoyo K10, Tornado Max, Nine Dragons, etc.)
I have the summer solstice and its good with finger spins I've been practicing for a week or so, and I get 5 seconds the most is most likely 8 seconds I realized the reason why my yoyo was coming back on itself is it had 2 loops making it more responsive. Great video. ( Can you put more first-person camera angles I think people learn the best from that angle.)

I have a Magic yoyo M002. Is it good for finger spins. its got a dimple in the middle but im not sure if its the best yoyo for finger spins
The dimple is on a raised platform, making it almost impossible to get your finger in the center.

You may still be able to do a basic fingerspin, but your finger will always orbit around the outside of the cup, so it will not last a super long time.
or the skyva which makes you a fingerspin pro EASILY

I have a sage but I want to do finger spins or looping. I'm not sure if I should get the skyva or the oracle. My binds arent quick.

Thank you for this tutorial. I'm still not very good at yoyo but finger spin, eli hops and boingy boing tricks always amazed me. After 30 minutes of failed finger spin attempts, one finally landed perfectly and the feeling was incredible

Not as well as the horizon. If you want the very best fingerspin, you're going to want a yoyo that doesn't have engravings in the cup.
But still, if you already have a shutter, give it a go. I learned my first fingerspins on an old school shutter.
The beadblasted shutters are pretty good for finger spins.

Would this work with the current civility yo-yo I bought it recently and I love it I got it in blue but every time I try my finger doesn’t land towards the middle which I’m not to worried about considering there’s a finger spin dimple and a ring and then another ring, but my finger always seems to hit the outer ring that comes back inwards a little bit and I don’t understand why I’ve also tried with my cheap plastic yoyo that I used to learn the basics

Jonahqwerty Gaming if your sage is still responsive it will be impossible because this trick creates slack in the string and the yoyo will come back, if you modded it to be unresponsive it will just be difficult, but still possible, but most plastics are more difficult to grind with than metals anyway (besides the skyva)

Finally got finger spins with the yoyofactory "Damage" yoyo. Tricky with the raised detail in the middle but once you lock in the right place it becomes easier!
Can I do it with a loop 1080? I am able to get the regular nose grind, but I was wondering...

I am having a difficult time with this because every time I get the yoyo on my finger it responds even though it is unresponsive. I have a king spin control yoyo and a green beboo ball yoyo each respond while the yoyo is on my finger and return to my yoyo hand. Please help.

wow this is why i think you are for sure the best yoyo teacher out there lol i had an idea on these concepts but when you put them into an example (like how you pointed out you dont tense your finger, paul kerbel said that himself in his own vid but you actually pointed out WHY) that makes sense!
so ive been stuck for weeks on learning "Jakub Dekan tutorial - Rejection to Green Triangle yoyo trick" and i cant seem to get it, and the video doesnt explain anything, you should keep this in your mind next time your making tutorials! either that or some more rejection or GT tutorials
The only unresponsive yoyo I have is the magic yoyo n5. Is this yoyo good for finger spins?
I am using the shutter yoyo and I don't have a very powerful throw, so should I get the horizon yoyo instead of having the rim of the cup in the shutter yoyo slow me down?
If you already know that you have a problem it is usually better to solve the problem first before getting a new yoyo, so I suggest you work on getting a more powerful throw. That being said, when you catch the Shutter you need to catch it in the very center to do finger spins, instead of on the outside rim. That will help your finger spins last much longer.
Would you say that the Horizon is better for learning the how to balance on your finger because of no dimple, while the Cypher (similar cup to Canon) is better for learning the laceration bind due to the higher walls?
Actually the Horizon makes the laceration bind easier than most yoyos because the gap is a little tighter. I am not sure if that is true compared to the Cypher, but that makes a bigger difference in my experience compared to higher side-walls.

my only yoyo that might work for finger spins is kind of like the transcend but instead of flat it has a slight convex bump that covers about half of the cup, would it work for finger spins?

The only thing you can do to make your throw stronger is practice.

When trying to bind, I always end up throwing the loop below the yoyo! Do you keep your throwhand vertical or horizontal while throwing the laceration?

+himnsh bhatia We have videos on the sleeper and the breakaway already. To get them straight just requires practice.
We discuss the problem you are having in the bind in the video. I have seen players position their hands both ways when throwing the laceration.
Can you put half of the purple yoyo on the half of the green yoyo and try it out? The special nice green one ofcourse..
With the Space Cadet, I have to actually pull my yoyo toward my throwhand in order to center my finger in the dimple. Am I doing this correctly, or can I just center my finger my having a soft finger?
hyperrr Pulling on the string is kind of a cheat, it works but it is horrible when learning more advanced finger spin tricks. Once you have perfected the soft finger, you will not need to pull on the string to center the yoyo anymore.
this trick can be done for both responsive and unresponsive yoyo right? Also I have the Sage yoyo and the bearing to make it unresponsive as well.
This trick should only be done on an unresponsive yoyo.

Is Magic yoyo T5 Overlord good for fingerspin? Is it unresponsive? I'm asking that because sometimes I need to bind it and sometimes It comes back with a single tug.
You need clean the bearing or just replace it with a new one. T5 kinda sucks on fingerspin, it has a very narrow "highest point", or "highest ring" which rubs your finger a lot

what about a shutter? would that still work properly? because i have been working on it for a few days now but it doesnt stay longer than 3 seconds. is it me or my yoyo (shutter)?
TheRealJayo long answer: I learnt to fingerspin on a de-anodised shutter (raw with lazer engravings). That is the worse possible shutter you can have for fingerspins, yet I still managed to get decent length finger spins. The shutter is really good for teaching accuracy. Short answer: the shutter is good at fingerspins, not the best, but very good none the less.
Just keep practicing i got anoyed while learning too.
I just recently got my horizon yoyo, and when I attempted this the yoyo would either fly off my finger, the yoyo would stop spinning, or the string would get tangled in the yoyo. What could I do to fix this?

You can, but you will be extremely limited in what you can do since that yoyo is not really designed for string tricks.
Will this trick work well on my yomega glide? I tried it a several times, and it will spin off my finger. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong.
The Glide is actually terrible for this trick.
I just bought a horizon from your website and when i finger spin the yoyo rewinds and flies off my finger without binding. Is there something wrong with the bearing?

i have a problem when i do a fingerspin and bind it my yoyo instantly become responsive and when i checked the bearring and spin it, it become unresponsive
right now I'm trying to learn to finger spun using my dv888 (only full metal yoyo). i cant get it to stay or spin for more than a second or two let alone bind. Should i be able to do this and just need more practice, or is it not worth trying with this yoyo? If not, what is a good cheap yoyo to learn on that would be a good upgrade?

Make sure to throw hard and catch the yoyo at an angle. You will gradually see your times improve.

Wouldn't grinding on a plastic(Replay Pro especially) scratch the cups a little bit? That's the reason I don't do it on my Replay or Premiere.

I tried to fingerspin on the atlas and found that I couldn't do it like Adam was doing it where he had his finger not as bent. I can fingerspin if my finger is really really bent but it takes awhile to lock in. Am I doing it right?
We recommend learning like we show in the video. Learning how to fingerspin is something that will take time to figure out.
For the iYoyo Steel, It has a little middle area that helps for finger spins. Everytime I hop it into my finger nail, I can't really get it centered. It always gets out of the hole and goes crazy.
+Jason FlashFire For the steel you either need to land it directly on the center, with the yoyo already leveled off, or you need to use the soft finger technique so that when the yoyo levels off it will drift to the center.

Do not attempt to catch it in the center, or to ever get your yoyo centered. Catch it the way we show in the video, with the yoyo angled.

Love the video, wasn't too long, covered all the bases and even had tips to help new players just starting out 10/10 will be showing video to my beginner friends. Also, can you fingerspin a hubstack yoyo?
Hubstack yoyos can spin horizontally like this, but it is nearly impossible to catch them out of the air like I show in this video. They are also tricky to balance on one finger which makes binding difficult as well.
