it's crazy that towards the end of the second set when Capriati was having her comeback, the crowd was going nuts yet it was Capriati who had 3 slams to Serena's 1 at this stage. It was Capriati who won the last slam in Australia. And it was Capriati who had won the first set of this match so why were they so for her to win? What I always found amazing was how bad Capriati's footwork was when she was hitting her backhand. Her feet were almost always never set, and she never had any balance, and would basically be falling over to hit it.
It was very old school...kind of like copying Evert but not great technique. Compare to Mary Pierce (also modelled on Evert)...the shoulders and hips move in unison, producing a balanced shot and more effortless power. Davenport probably had the best backhand of that generation (as well as Venus)...perfect timing and flawless technique. Jennifer's forehand was excellent though and I think her steady backhand was a weapon combined with the powerful forehand.
I'd love to see highlights of Myskina's drubbing of Capriati in the 2004 FO Semi. That was something else. That is taking advantage of good fortune if I've ever seen it. And of the match when she saved match point against Kuznetsova earlier in the tournament. It was such a shame Myskina let Henin off the hook at the Olympics that year and missed out on a medal
I don’t think it was good fortune. Myskina was a consistent top 10 player in 2002 and 2003 before winning her Slam at the age of 22 and she beat Molik, Kuznetsova, Venus, Capriati and Dementieva to win the title while seeded #6. Injuries prevented her from going further in her career, not lack of talent. She was physically done by 25 and retired very young. She had a winning record against all of her Russian contemporaries at the time (3-2 vs Sharapova, 4-2 vs Kuznetsova, 5-1 against Safina, 3-1 vs Zvonareva, 9-6 vs Dementieva, 3-2 vs Petrova, etc.)
@@regulusarcturus yes I agree with you somewhat. It's just she didn't have to play and beat Serena who had lost the round before - I'm pretty sure she never won against Serena. Starting from 2001 Australian open and French open titles, semifinal appearances in 2001 Wimbledon and us open, victory at the 2002 Australian open and semifinal here in France. She was in very good shape. 2001 Wimbledon semifinal against henin was a real opportunity she missed to win the title. 2001 us open and here, she was beaten by better players

Capriati was NEVER winning Wimbledon 2001. 0:32 incorrect, this was at least Serena’s THIRD grand slam semifinal appearance. She also made the semis at USO 1999 (obviously, having won it) and then Wimbledon SF in 2000, losing to Venus.
And semi at the 2000 USO.
@@charlesmasanso2920do u mean 2001? iirc in 2000 she reached the QF

Serena covering the court like Rafa in that 3rd set, the gets and desire to get to every ball, wow!
Damn Serena was so light on her feet and had so much power behind her swings back then, still has power but I can tell she lost a step over the years.
a step?? more like lost step(s)
Is the scoreboard at 15:20 incorrect? It shows 3 MPs for Capriati
Great vid, but if not mistaken the stats aren’t right. This couldn’t be Serena’s second grand slam semi-final because she’d already been to 2 US Open finals and a Wimbledon semi in 2000.
This is off the top of my head but I’m pretty sure it’s accurate.
I forgot how good Jennifer was..miss her

It’s amazing how low level the women’s tennis is now compared to back then. These women would mop the floor with the entire top 20 wta now
Totally agree 👍
it's crazy that towards the end of the second set when Capriati was having her comeback, the crowd was going nuts yet it was Capriati who had 3 slams to Serena's 1 at this stage. It was Capriati who won the last slam in Australia. And it was Capriati who had won the first set of this match so why were they so for her to win? Usually they go for the underdog and the one who hasn't already won a set so the match will go three. It can only be a race thing
i mean it can't ONLY be a race thing, but in this case it was lmfao
There's something about Serena, similar to Djokovic, that people just don't like and it can't
be brought back to race (Serena) or nationality (Djokovic) only. Let me try to sample what
most of my family thinks about both these players.
Serena: fake, arrogant, lack of class, makes it too much about power in her game
Djokovic: boring to watch, not as talented as Fedal, no magic in his game.
@@francisvandermosen302 man just say you fucking racist and get out. what is it about her you don't like? do you know her personally? I guess Maria Sharapova is not arrogant or fake. shut your dumb racist mouth fool.

That cameroun shirt was fire 🔥
What I always found amazing was how bad Capriati's footwork was when she was hitting her backhand. Her feet were almost always never set, and she never had any balance, and would basically be falling over to hit it.
I just commented something similar. I hate it lol
I like her partisan and kind-of-struggling technique and style..i can see a balance in it
It was very old school...kind of like copying Evert but not great technique. Compare to Mary Pierce (also modelled on Evert)...the shoulders and hips move in unison, producing a balanced shot and more effortless power. Davenport probably had the best backhand of that generation (as well as Venus)...perfect timing and flawless technique. Jennifer's forehand was excellent though and I think her steady backhand was a weapon combined with the powerful forehand.
these matches are still satisfying .....not one match can get me excited like these old days
And she didn't have to play against Justine either who had illness in 2004 and lost early. Mind you I would have loved to see her get over the line in that epic semi of the Olympics that year over Henin. That was heartbreaking
@@cameronbedeau8542 I get what you mean, but I don’t think not beating Serena or Henin undermines her Slam. She still beat a lot of really tough opponents.
And yeah, her loss to Henin in Athens was brutal but credit to Henin who played so well after being out for months due to a difficult illness.

Wow the hold of service by Serena down 3-6, 5-6 at 0-40. That's 3 match points at least. A true competitor. Bravo.
She didn’t hold from 0-40. You even see her win the first point of the game in this video. At 5-6 she held serve to love - the score on the screen is an error.
Amazing game by Serena.Bravo 👏❤️
Jennifer capriati's dream grand Slam run ended here. six consecutive grandslam semifinal appearances or better.
Evert made semi finals or better in 52 of 56 GS tournament Plus never lost before the finals in Australia No other player had such a long consistent career
Capriati was NEVER winning Wimbledon 2001. Venus in the final would have destroyed her on grass, particularly when she is 3-0 vs Capriati on hard courts, where Capriati's chances are far higher than they would be vs Venus on grass. In fact with Venus and Davenport playing in the other semi, I guaranteed Capriati would never win the title if she won the semi vs young Henin, no matter who she played, as both Venus and Davenport are certain to beat her on grass.
One of the most important matches in Serena's career
Yes, this match helped catapult her success as a major-winning machine. When she defeated Venus in the final, it was the beginning of her first “Serena Slam.”
Correction its not Serena's 2nd semi ..it her 4th semi final of grand slam
Serena really needed these matches to start THINKING in big matches.. even this match, she nearly blew it away with some very mehh strategy at time
Serena was only 20 yrs old in this semi final . Semi final was in May & she did not turn 21 till September
