No. Throw it away and start over. The more you fk with something, the worse it becomes, and then you will settle for "good enough" instead of being brave enough to give your vision a legitimate chance. Your vision deserves better.
SOOO TRUE, so many people waste so much time working on a foregone conclusion, you have to know what won't work if you want to make something that does work
This resonates with more than just art. I learned the lesson of knowing when to quit when I gained long term injuries from a mere 6-ish weeks (only 1 or 2 days per week) of volleyball. I was pushing and pushing myself, ignoring the fact that I didn't have the foundational strength or forethought to play. I couldn't say no...not to my crappy supposed coaches nor to myself. Sometimes hit the breaks is right, sometimes you also just need to step away and look at it with fresh eyes, but sometimes you have to fight the ugly stage. I think I’ve only had 2 pieces in the over a decade I’ve been a professional artist that didn’t have an ugly stage that I had to push through. But yes delete your art is also valid, lol I have also done that
This is so real, I was working on a sculpture in art class for 2 solid weeks and no matter what I did I wasn't happy with it. My teacher was upset with me, but I felt so relieved not having the burden of an expectation for a project I couldn't fulfill.
Times like those I find it easyer to just start again but change the subject like if it had to be a face then do another face than the one you did before. One that inspires you. Sometimes we are our own most severe critics. If you get stuck again call the teacher heer what they have to say. If you're not happy but the teacher is give it in. Sounds not right but sometimes we are so into a project that we can't see the beauty only the flaws. If you go away from it not looking at it for 2 weeks and then give it another go it will help.
I am definitely no artist, but I appreciate art and those who pour their heart and soul into making their own. Same thing with writing and probably any creative field. Knowing when to stop, especially since there is _ALWAYS_ something that can be fixed or tweaked or improved, can be so *difficult.* Sometimes the opposite happens too: you stop because you’re afraid you’ll overwork the piece or skew it up, and you like what you’ve gotten so far. But if you’d kept going, it might have been more spectacular.

This is probably the most important thing I've had to learn in art and life in general. Sometimes you need to stop, rethink, and retry. The amount of projects I've nearly had meltdowns over only for things to go perfectly on my second or third try is testament to this. Do not be a slave to the sunk cost mentality.
This is on point, it's hard to stop, the worst thing for me is getting a work right almost where you want it, but having that urge to continue, you don't know what it is but its missing, only to destroy the work by overdoing it!
"Deleting your art" as Drawfee would say, is sometimes the answer. Don't make it too precious. BUT at the same time, sometimes, just stepping away for sometime is the answer too. Getting fresh eyes and taking a break can sometimes do wonders.
I couldn't agree more. As an artist the one thing I do to much is keep adding. I constantly remind myself that simple is sometimes the best. The sweet spot is me liking something naturally, not forcing myself to want to like it.
That is a very important lesson for people to learn. Sometimes, you have to know when to step back, call it quits, or simply wash it away and try a new. I think everyone focuses too much on never giving up. Which is also a very important lesson. You just have to know the difference between the two.
Another hard part about being an artist is knowing when you’ve added enough. Because there’s been so many times when I’ve made a drawing I was really proud of, and the little voice in the back of my head would tell me “add more” and sometimes I add and it looks better, but most of the time I end up ruining it and I end up regretting it DEEPLY
Genuinely, if you torture yourself to continue something you don't want to, you'll only learn to resent it. Learning to be okay with not finishing something and learning when to scrap it are the most important things you can do to keep art as something you can enjoy. The concept of not letting your art be too precious to you is important. You're not always going to finish that sketch that you love and were super inspired for when you started. You're not always going to like how a piece is coming along and you might need to scrap it, trying too hard to fix it might make it worse, even. You're not always going to like how the fully finished piece turns out. Learning to cope with those things and learn from them are super valuable lessons. I don't finish more things than I do, and I don't always like what I do finish and learning to be okay with that has helped me draw more in the past six months than I had in the past 3 years. It's very discouraging to get attached to the idea of a piece and not have it come together correctly.
Creating something in one go will after result in something you like just temporarily, as it is created in the limitation of that mood alone. Taking pauses from an artwork and coming back to it (even for 15 minutes) rises the complexity of connection you have with that piece, and the capacity to render more within it. That is also the distinction between therapeutic creating and a Masterpiece.

I hear you often "misuse" common phrases and its one of the things about you that I like the most. "Hit the bricks" is a term meaning "beat it" or "scram". "Hit the brakes" as in brakes in a vehicle, means to stop something. ❤
100% agree. The ugly stage doesn't always go away and throwing more sh!t and art supplies at it until it doesn't make you angry anymore isn't your vision and you know it. Once it doesn't work, stop and start over. Respect your vision and art enough to actually try instead of settling for "good enough." This is how you actually get better at art - you see where you fk'd up, and you do it again and make different choices so you don't fk up. That's the secret to getting better, you're welcome.
True, I pull out a canvas and my mind goes blank, usually I just scroll on Pinterest and then put my own twist on something. Or I wake up at midnight with an idea and just start painting.
I find I know what I would like to draw/sketch but need more practice on how to do it to a level I’m happy with. If something is not looking how I’d imagined it I stop and if the weather is nice I go for a walk to clear my head, which usually works
just gouache it all away. make your mistakes take breaks. unionize. these thoughts and more ran through my head during this short, what a time to be alive.
I love watching you paint with such steady hands, knowing exactly how to paint inside a curve to a skinny straight line, like on that sword, is a beautiful skill.
To me my favourite part of being an artist is being able to literally illustrate what I mean. This obviously comes with the drawback that my brain is dumb and I struggle to talk sometimes. When my lips fail to express what brain produced, my hands will never disappoint to prove a point
nozomi you make the best videos! you have such a warm presence and create such a safe but fun environment (even tho it’s through a phone!) thk u for doing it all for us!!
I’m an artist too, I have an entire closet, bookcase, and under the bed, of stuff I’ve “hit the breaks on”. It took me forever to learn to do that. Now I just throw it in one of my “fix it later piles” and eventually later I do return to it with much success!
Bro, that was my issue. If I didn’t like it, I would dispose of it and start over but then I watch somebody draw over my disposed of paper and they actually made art so sometimes I force myself to finish even if I hate it. That’s my training.
This! I've abandoned drawings when they weren't going in the right direction or stopped my drawing process when I noticed that I wasn't in a good drawing phase right now. Sometimes, taking a break helped me further develop my skills.
I just had to do the same things twice on a gouache painting I was working on! Finally finished it this weekend! I love artist gouache because you can just lift the layer of paint if it is not working out.
So true. I used to "overdo" art a lot when I was younger. Just keep adding, think it's nice, keep adding, keep adding, keep adding, then it would reach a point where it wasn't nice anymore. Learning when to stop depends on each piece but it's important to at least have it in the back of my mind as like a 3rd person pov

I find I know what I would like to draw/sketch but need more practice on how to do it to a level I’m happy with. If something is not looking how I’d imagined it I stop and if the weather is nice I go for a walk to clear my head, which usually works
Truly inspirational words that we should all live by!
just gouache it all away. make your mistakes take breaks. unionize. these thoughts and more ran through my head during this short, what a time to be alive.
Beautiful final artwork btw......and loving the boldness of just washing it all out - ha ha.
This is also great advice for life, not just painting, but for everything we do.
Your dog is absolutely lovely ❤
IT WAS SO GOOD THO 😭
Your dog!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I just got here and i want to watch all of her vids
Im in love with your color palette, your style and aesthetic 🩷
I LOOOVEEE the way she emphasises her words!!! 😂🥰👌
I love watching you paint with such steady hands, knowing exactly how to paint inside a curve to a skinny straight line, like on that sword, is a beautiful skill.
the DOGGIE!!!! what a cutiepie
Also, sometimes just stepping away is best. Taking a break, taking a walk and coming back in with fresh eyes helps me sooo much.
First i was like aww it looked good, but the FINISHED ART? Absolutely gorgeous!!!❤
This short is actually a piece of art 🎨
Loved your guy’s panel at Galaxy Con ❤ very fun!
Well said! Letting go is often the hardest part, even when you know you're going nowhere
Seriously I adore your art so much
That's a precious advice.
"Knowing when to give up" is the best advice for any artist 🎯🖼️👩🏾🎨✍🏾🫶🏾
I love her lil fangs!💙💙
Thanks for the cool ideas for gifts, they seem pretty interesting! :)
Bro, that was my issue. If I didn’t like it, I would dispose of it and start over but then I watch somebody draw over my disposed of paper and they actually made art so sometimes I force myself to finish even if I hate it. That’s my training.
Thank you for sharing this. I have that same problem when it comes to sewing or diamond painting, or just any other arts and crafts that I create.
So is no one gonna talk about how wonderful that doggy wheelchair is? JUST LOOK AT THA PUPPA
Both are master pieces 🙌🏼
Oh man, sooo true!! I'm still working on learning when to stop. My method is , if you're not improving it, it's time to quit!😂
You are truly very wise!
THIS VIDEO HELPED ME SO MUCH! I was working on a painting, but I didn’t really love it and you gave me the confidence to start over. Thanks!
Daeummmm that's the best motivation speech❤ ur art was superb 🔥
This is by far the funniest Microwave Society video ive ever seen 😂
I’ve started learning very quickly which sketches I actually want to spend the time turning into fully rendered pieces.
I can totally relate to what you’re saying being an artist myself I don’t know when to quit either
Great advice for many things in life ❤
