Impressive that the lead singer/guitarist has a very Weller-esque sounding voice, AND he nails the look with an Aria knock-off of a Gibson L-5 archtop guitar. The only difference is that the tailpiece on Weller's was a scroll lyre style instead of the Gibson L5 type. Very well played, The Style Councillors. How I wish there was more demand for Paul Weller tribute bands here in the States. I had played around with starting my own calling myself "Small Weller". There just is such low interest, sadly.

Hi Michael, this is actually one of the guitars Paul played with The Style Council. The Councilors got it right. It was a "Herb Ellis" 16" Aria Pro II model and I think he plays it on a live Long Hot Summer video. You can see the initials "HE" on the pickguard. The other archtop that he played was a Yamaha AE2000 17" and is the one he plays on Showbiz. He never played an L5 and the best way to spot the difference is the bottom of the neck of an L5 is pointed at the end near the neck pickup. For whatever reasons Paul liked Japanese guitars during the Style Council, I think the bass player even had one. If your familiar with "80s lawsuit" guitars the Japanese were basically trying to copy the L5 directly to sell in Japan only and Gibson sued some Japanese guitar companies and won. Hence the L5 tailpiece ripoff on this guitar. If you can find a Japanese lawsuit jazzbox these days, they are going up in price and sound good. Good luck with your tribute band.!

Wrong. They are not out of tune. Your ear is out of tune. Best tribute band I've ever seen. Far better than watching Paul Weller now, he's well passed it. Retire please Paul.
