Such a pleasure to watch your cycle touring videos! Amazing angles. You really make justice to the beautiful scenery on this trip in South America. And I love your bike with the belt drive, the comfortable riding bars, the nice rolling and puncture resistant Marathon Almotion tyres and the minimal, lite and compact gear you carry. It looks like it's taking all the punishment on those dreadful roads really well, with zero maintenance...? It's such a pleasure to just ride without too much weight and not worry about mechanical problems! I also identify myself with that way of riding, without feeling exhaustion of going up the hills, just soaking it up and enjoying the ride and the scenery, without complaints! Keep it going and hope to meet you one day in Portugal!
You're right, it's super nice to never have to worry about problems or maintenance with the Rohloff/Gates drivetrain! I'm super lucky to have KOGA as my sponsor for this trip. I can't really imagine a better bike for the mix of on-road and off-road stuff that I'm doing. Obviously, it's probably not the best bike for this sector in particular, but as a percentage of distance and time on a multi-year journey, the roads are normally way smoother than not. 👍🏻
This is some of the most inspirational and goosebump provoking footage of bikepacking. Thank you, SO MUCH for everything you do. - Cheers from Canada! 😀
I am totally amazed at your great, positive, accepting attitude. You are an inspiration and a role model for getting the job done, facing challenges and appreciating the mountains, snow, mud. That little boy was so happy helping you! The music is great! Thanks!!!

Another beautiful episode. Thank you. The images were stunning in Peru. You have a great eye and no shortage of subject matter to capture. BTW, I subscribe to numerous bike trekkers. Each has their specialty, all share their experiences generously, you handle the bike like a Pro. It’s enjoyable to watch you navigate challenging road surfaces, steep gradients and unfavorable weather conditions. Stay safe, keep pedaling and keep posting your wonderful adventures.
Thanks James. There haven't been many days in my life where I haven't ridden a bike, so time has really allowed me to hone my riding skills and take my bikes to some amazing places!
CyclingAbout Here’s a short list. There are others to be sure but these are my go to’s. Iohan Gueorguiev, See the World Chris Wishworth, wonderful adventures from down under Darren Alff, bicycle touring Pro ForestryForest, bike packing Ed Pratt, world touring unicyclist SuperCycling Man Waddo
Very envious of your travelling adventures. Surprised you don't have front suspension on bike. Gravel roads are rough on forearms but you may have suspension in stem/ handlebars if I remember from other videos. I've been telling myself for twenty years I'd see the salar but here I sit. Happy travels. You must have an understanding wife if you are never home. And if the llamas ever talk back it's time for a rest day.
Keep up the lovely videos. Fantastic editing. I'm planning a January 2020 take-off for a similar trip! By the way I highly highly highly recommend you try to learn some Spanish, it'll immerse you in your experience more and bridge the gap between you and locals. I can attest to this, having lived and travelled over in South America last year. Us Aussies are generally terrible at foreign languages but it'll open doors for you Alee. Good luck with you journey!
That's not too far away! 👏🏼 Let me know if you have any questions. I really need to work on my Spanish! I'm pretty good at understanding, but I can only speak the basics. The thing is I spend so much time away from cities and people (90%+ of all days), so I don't really get the opportunity to engage with people more than for a few seconds here and there. The fact that I'm so self-sufficient doesn't help my cause! BUT... I do have the goal over the next few months to lift my game because I've heard Colombians go out of their way to engage with you and invite you into their lives. 😊
Very good video, you did an awesome job putting this together and the music is perfect. Too bad you had to turn back for a detour, I know that feeling and it's no fun!! Looks like you're choosing some epic gnarly routes, have you thought about switching to a plus bike or a bikepacking setup?
Thanks! The aim of the game for me is to optimise for both on and off-road riding. Obviously, a lightweight plusbike/bikepacking setup would be most ideal for the terrain in this video. But on a multi-year trip, I still spend the majority of my time on hardpack roads (hence the slicks). I don't really find the panniers too much of a hindrance, and love them for their practicality. I'm not seeing more than a couple of kilometres of proper singletrack per month so ground clearance has really been a non-issue so far.
With this one you're giving Iohan the fatbiker a run for his money.....and you're giving that Koga a right beating.....awesome.....some of those cliff rides were downright scary, mate....:-)
yeah, I know - follow him closely - but I've never seen anyone lug a fully loaded touring bike up the Andes, in mid winter - dude.....:-).....that's gold...:-)
CyclingAbout Thank you brother. I have the 2018 Fuji touring. I’ll be installing a set of 38’ marathon mondials, hoping it’s enough to get me through rougher areas.
@@Cyclingabout I definitely want to see the Andes someday.. What would you say has the best roads? Chile? I hope they have roads up to 5000m :) (dirt or paved)
I think I like Peru and Bolivia best for roads. The valleys are a lot tighter and much less exposed to the wind. The scenery is much more varied here too. That said, the landscapes are pretty unique/mind blowing in Northern Arg, Northern Chile and Southern Bolivia. Just do it all! 😂
Do you get a lot of flats? Seems you are always riding over sharp rocks. Given the very aggressive terrain, would you consider plus size tires of 3 inches...or maybe even a FAT TIRE bike? What is the largest size tire for the bike you are riding?
I've had four flat tyres in 15,000km of riding. Two flats were from goat head thorns in Argentina (see my 3rd video to see how sharp they are), and two were from metal staples on the road. Sharp rocks very rarely pierce through touring tyres. For this terrain, I would be much better served with some plus tyres. If I ran 27.5" rims instead of 700C, I can fit plus tyres in my KOGA frameset (eg. www.cyclingabout.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Eurobike-2018-Koga-03.jpg). I'd be even better served with a fat bike! The thing is that the majority of the riding I do is actually on hard road surfaces (hardpack dirt or sealed roads) so a touring tyre is not only much much faster, but it lasts for 15,000km+.
@@astrowind9580 I'd like the Almotion or Mondial in 2.4" preferably. I'm not sure what pressure I run, but it's pretty high because I carry a fair bit of gear, food and water in the remote areas.
So I am at EP.7 and really enjoying the trip. Very inspiring. I would like to hear about any repairs you had to do on the bike, any flats on those crazy trails?
The bike is bombproof; I broke a spoke in Patagonia but other than that, it's essentially been maintenance free. The only thing I'd probably change is the fenders to something a little bit wider so that I can get the 29x2.15" Almotions in, instead of the 29x2.0". I'll make this change the next time I need new rubber. The bike is obviously not the best for some of the terrain I take on, but on average, I think it's the fastest, most-practical setup for a multi-year adventure.

I wonder if the snow section could be ridden at night when the temp drops and the snow freezes ?
I don't think so. It was a little too deep and I was a bit too heavy!
