I live in a small apartment in Melbourne, where housing is also crazy unaffordable at the moment- I often feel frustrated about the property market, so thank you for reminding me that I don't necessarily need to be living the picture perfect off-grid cabin life to live a good life! There's so much you can do with even just an urban balcony space. :)

Seaspiracy was so good! I think that everyone should watch that movie, it was very eye opening. I agree that spring is really great in Canada (I’m on the Eastern side though)!
It definitely had its problems though, for example, overly dramatised statistics which in most cases weren't referenced (for example, the main statistic of 'there will be no fish from the ocean by 2048' was cited from a 2006 paper where the authors have since retracted this statement, and is thus false), and also hints of white saviourism and lack of BIPOC scientists. Personally, I found they brushed over a lot of things so quickly to try and cram it all in? I also feel like it was very over sensationalised, which works to get the general population thinking more about these issues but doesn't quite cut it from a scientific perspective. I would even go so far as to say it was slight propaganda... they were so intent on driving the message of 'no fishing can ever be sustainable' that it made for quite a biased documentary, you can clearly see that in how they cut and pasted the interviews with the NGOs. Also many fisheries scientists and marine biologists prove there are ways in which we can have sustainable fishing, though of course not eating fish for now is still the better option. I would still recommend the general population watch it, but to take the statistics with a pinch of salt.
@@solarpunkalana The statistics for 2048 bothered me too, to be honest, but I don’t really agree with you on the fact that the documentary should have been more scientific. Scientists have been telling the numbers for years now and still, no one cares. I think that the fact that they dramatized it really helped in reaching more people and making people really understand the severity of the problem, and as far as I know, the movie really got a good feedback.
Love this! You should do move vlogs :) Also, wetsuits are life changing for swimming... I've already managed to properly swim in early March in freezing British waters with one... although only for 10 minutes, lol. Definitely more of a mountain person.

Hi, I have a doubt. I know that the field of biology is very extensive and that when looking for a job it can be difficult, especially if you have just left university. I had planned to study biology but lean more to the side of animals that is to say zoology, I know a university that has a degree in biology oriented in zoology and another that has a degree in biology. Obviously I plan to study a specialization after completing biology but my question is whether it is convenient for me to study biology or biology (orientation in zoology) as a basis? Since if I study biology oriented in zoology, does it reduce the field of work for me? especially if I just got out of college? In other words, I could not work in any field of biology because my studies were oriented in zoology. what would you recommend me? by the way, I love your videos and it is really encouraging to find people who work in the world of biólogy and wildlife, greetings from Argentina

I just wanted to mention that I hope you thought to find a ranger and related your encounter. You could make an argument that he possibly assaulted you as he invaded your space and frightened you and he certainly stalked you. I mention it because this kind of thing happens more often than you think in state and national parks and should be reported immediately. I’m glad it ended the way it did and could have been worse and often does. That guy is potentially a danger to others.
Just heard your scariest in the woods video,first of all you need a gun to be rolling the dice on your camping in the middle of nowhere trips second of all your gorgeous which is even a better reason to have a gun for protection for your friends too and stay safe please alot of creepy people out there that would worry most guys your conifedence is unmatched your a strong person

Oh wow! yes once you get on the west side of the island its well known for surfing, like in Tofino. My dad is a surfer and came up here to surf back in the day

A couple years ago my family had two geese, Emerson and Charlie, and my twin sister and I would take them on walks with harnesses and leashes. Weird I know haha I just moved into town so I had to rehome them which was sad. My goose, Emerson, got a bit sassy the year before we had to rehome them though. I love nature and animals

I have a question - not sure that this is the best place to ask, but I though of it because of your garden tour- I'm planning my own balcony garden, but last year mosquitoes made gardening absolutely miserable - 3 minutes to water my plants and I'd get like 5 bites. I can't even fit mosquito nets on my one and only window, so every time I went to water my plants I would let a ton of them in. I'm pretty sure I caught at least one tiger mosquito, too - though I'm in Europe, they've recently come over to where I live. I really, really want to set up mosquito repellents, larveae traps, etc, but I'm concerend about the impact of those on other insects - also, will reducing the mosquito population hurt animals who maybe might eat them etc? So I'm wondering how you deal with mosquitos, if you have them there, and also as a biologist, what do you think about mosquito traps, and when/how you would use them! I totally get if you don't or if it's not your interest/area of expertise though!
It's definitely not my area of expertise and I'm lucky enough to not get any in the city where I live. My first thought is it seems like there's so many mosquitos where you live I wouldn't be concerned about hurting the populations of them! Seems like there's plenty to go around and the animals will just go otherwise if they prey on them. There are some insect repellents that have an impact on ecological health, my suggestion is to look up the options (citronella candles or whatever you choose) and google it with 'ecological effects' and see if there's any papers addressing their environmental impact. They're all so different its hard to speak to all of them. I hope you can find something that works for you though!

Do you have any recommendations for how to go about doing research on your own as an undergrad?? I’m currently a ecology and evolutionary biology major and one of my professors recommended getting a research position or creating my own research project to put on my graduate school applications. There aren’t many research opportunities where I live and I’m a little lost on what I can do that’s achievable as an undergrad. Any help would be awesome!!!
Check out online research positions! Things have changed a bit since I looked for research jobs so I’m not sure the best place to look but try following your favourite local environmental organizations and see what they post. Often they need help cataloging wildlife camera trap photos or something similar to assist with research projects. Here a lot of that is done through federal parks and can be done online. If not, then start off small for undergrad research. Think about the issues local to your area. Overfishing a certain region, digitization mapping of cultural sites, introduction of an invasive species into a park...and create research ideas from there. If you get permission you can set up test plots for vegetation...try looking up research projects in the niche you’re interested in and read their methods for ideas of how to set your research up. I know that’s kind of simplifying it but hopefully that spurs some ideas

I should invest in a wetsuit one of these days. My friends use them for snorkelling in the summers even since it's pretty much always cold water here
I live in Edmonton, and during the pandemic I've been missing the ocean sooo much. I wish I could just sit by the ocean everyday during the pandemic.
