In 2019, I was working part-time in retail here in the UK, my son was killed, and even though I was only part-time I took 9 month off work on full pay, the company was absolutely fantastic, when I was ready to go back to work they insisted I had counselling, in fact said I could not go back until I had been given the all clear by the councillor, the company paid for it's all, on my first day back the regional manager came in to say hello and check I was doing I'm ok, thank God I live in the UK and not the US

We had our baby girl and the next morning went back to work. Boss says why didn't you come back in yesterday. I told him baby wasn't born till 2.oo in the morning and he huffed and walked off. To blow the mind of people from a certain country, here how it works in Germany (with a few notable exceptions, like doctors, nurses, truck drivers and IT):
      - if you work, your normal hours, each will count and will be paid.
      - if you work more hours, you'll get (increased) overtime pay OR have to be given a chance to take an equal time of inside the next year.
      - you are not allowed to work more than 8 hours a day. And not more than 48 hours a week. Under rare circumstances that can be extended to 10 hours a day, but that has to be compensated by time off.
      - if you have to be on site to be available (Bereitschaftsdienst, standby), the time you are NOT working counts for half, as soon as you are working, the clock ticks at full speed again)
      - if you are "on-call" meaning you can stay at home, but have to to react RIGHT NOW once your beeper/phone goes off (think some emergency or IT jobs), that count's for 1/8th. Again, the moment you answer said call, your clock is ticking at 100% again.
      - if you are not "on-call", you are NOT on-call. Meaning you'll not be called from work during your time off, or holiday and so on.

Americans are SLOWLY waking up. Its hard to get to that point because all our lives here we have been fed the "pull yourself up from the bootstraps" and "You gotta work hard to get anywhere" and etc etc that stems all the way back to the Puritans. I mean I literally saw a vid a few days ago of some corporate CEO who isn't even American (from Canada) talking about the whole new (not really new... just finally has a name) quiet quitting trend that is going on here in the States and how it's "UnAmErIcAn!" These shithead CEO's literally want us to bleed for them.... give up our entire lives for our jobs and shit and it's all just profits for them. Profits rule the US its all about $$$$ and nothing else here. Also the fact that our VERY HEALTH depends on having a job ie... no job no health insurance... makes it hard. Corporate America anti union propaganda is also next level here not to mention the lack of a solid working class conscience .... a lot of Americans are still just looking out for themselves. Also.... dont get me started on this whole hustle culture we have going... these shitheads who love working 80+ hours a week and somehow think its healthy and that if we all just acted like them it will all be good. damn I hate those fuckers!

But if, say, an American company wanted to hire someone from Sweden, then they need to compete with what work in Sweden is already offering that employee. Otherwise, why would he bother?
I know we rag on US companies specifically being that they're the domestic market for US citizens to work in, but lets not embellish here. There are plenty of companies from other parts of the world that offer US-stationed employees the same as the US companies do both for better and worse because they know their employees probably won't have better options. It's the rules of the economic game. Which is precisely why the country's government needs to be there to keep balance by setting standards for all companies to uphold.

Me too, however not everything in the UK is bright either. There was ... at least for a period of time... a loophole that employers were exploiting to the max. They could hire people to work for free for 3 months, as a trial period before hiring them normally. The employers who did that, they never kept anyone more than those 3 free labour months. They'd just get another person for free for 3 months and then another and so on. But I think there was some correction in the law later on and they cannot exploit people that way (I think).

You will get 'freedom' 'liberty' and the 'constitution'. The thing is that was quite radical in the 1780s but the rest of the world has moved on. Free healthcare, work/life balance, minimum leave time, a fair regime and laws to protect them are as much a right these days as having democracy. Are you serious. I'm 63 in the UK and can't do my experienced job the last 13 years because of a medical records error and medical negligence. The horror companies, and government mandated work schemes benefitting pirvate companies for zero, is completely out of this world. I'm surprised this happens in the US, but it CAN be infinitely more horific here. Everything is the responsibilty of the "self employed" or umbrella company scammed worker. I delivered trade cars as an example. You have to "bid" to do a job but it;s set too low. You pay your train and bus travel out of that, walk 4 - 6 miles in your boots/ shoes, use your phone and data to send inspection photos on their app. If the job is incorrect you lose your pre paid train home (because you bid on the job against the cost of the train yesterday), pay in full for a later train or take it home and deliver the next day for zilch. 16 hours with eating out, 4 miles in the rain and you clear £40 - 50 IF the job went as planned (60%).
I refuse EV vehicle deliveries to customers because you charge them up near the client, so 2-4 hours if ports available, plus washing none of which your time is paid for.
I worked for a Jaguar Land Rover service franchise (worst rep. in the country), as a chauffeur in a luxury retirement village, did a few months in an embassy / high commission (nice people (wrong residences location). Offered a role at another embassy but they pay you £8-9 ph for 9 to 5, you get £4 ph for the majority of evenening work.
Sorry about the rant. Those are not the best examples except the first engineius car trade one.

@@pomerau Sorry to hear you've had such a poor employment experience, and I know it is widespread among those in the gig economy. I've never lived in Wonderland unfortunately, I'm sure it would have been a lot more comfortable than some of the brutal experiences I've had in business over the years, dancing around homelessness sometimes, and whilst the bulk of my working life has been in the northern areas of England I lived in SW19 for quite a while. As my businesses grew, I always took extra care and note of the junior - and thus less well paid - employees, and used to satisfy myself they had a roof over their heads that they could afford, and similarly food. For me, and most of the people I met and associated with in business it was a no brainer, your employees are absolutely the most important asset in a business and need to be properly trained, properly paid and continuously encouraged and appreciated. Maximum effort into the relationship from me, maximum effort and productivity from them. Simple and effective. However, you are quite right to point out that this is not the case in many enterprises which feel able to mismanage employees in the manner you describe because there's always someone to step into your shoes, isn't there ? I share your views on foreign gangs, non payment of PAYE and the like, don't get me started either. Jaguars used to be my daily car, and I had an excellent relationship with the workshop personnel at my local dealer, who were always invited once or twice a year to a barbeque at my house. Of course, the next dealership might have been dreadful, mightn't they ? I now live very simply in rural southern Spain, but I've a similar relationship with the lads at my local dealership who service my car. Anytime they go above and beyond, there's a case of beer handed to them with my thanks. Society has a number of ills within employment that I cannot correct, but I dealt with those who worked for me with respect, courtesy and commitment. I'm sorry that hasn't been your experience. There were no questions asked. They just condoled me, and let me leave I was out of the building like 5 Minutes after I got the message. Next day I went back to work just to apply for "Sonderurlaub im Trauerfall", which basically translates to "special leave in the case of grief" and got a week and a half off by full pay. That's law for you here in germany. Though how many days your employer has to give you is not clearly specified as it factors in different things, most of the time people here have some effing decency. I dropped everything and went to find the guy in the warehouse. He was too afraid to leave because his supervisor was at lunch. The next day (a few days before the funeral) while working my shift, the rota for the next week was issued and i was scheduled for the days i'd booked off. I spoke to the assistant floor manager (the floor manager was travelling to india for a family wedding) only to be told someone was off sick with a doctors note so i was needed to cover the shift. I ended up having to explain the situation to him, infront of customers, while balling my eyes out. Which got the response "I'm sorry for you loss but we need you here". So i told him to fuck himself i wouldn't be coming in, "then you'll be fired!" not a problem, i said i dont want to work where i'm not allowed compassionate leave.
Went in to grab my wageslip when i got back from the funeral and the area manager was there, i knocked on the cash office door and asked for my wageslip, and was met with confused looks. I explained to the area manager the whole situation, she gave me the rest of the week off. When i got back from that, the first staff member i saw came over really excited, what had happened was the last straw for the assitant floor manager, apparently he'd had several warnings and ignoring approved time off was a step too far and he got fired.

For example this is the mandatory system in Portugal: I work 40hrs a week, 9 to 6, I am paid 14 months a year (11 months + the vacation month + the vacation 1 month salary of pocket money to spend on my vacation + the Christmas 1 month salary of pocket money to spend on Christmas time) plus 22 days a month of meal pocket money. And no one can fire me unless there's a very serious issue on my fault against the company.
You would be shocked with our work laws.
And it's mandatory the companies pay for the 5 days absence caused by direct relatives death. Some companies even send flowers to the family or even in some cases they send an executive to attend the funeral.

My dad died a couple of years ago, aged 84, from cancer. My manager was brilliant - as soon as my dad was whipped into hospital and we knew it was seriously close I was told "take as much time off as you need, just keep us informed" - that left me free to go and visit my Dad in hospital, see my mum, and keep in contact with the rest of the family
Same thing with the funeral and all the arrangements before & after - if I needed to drop offline or take time off, just do it. "family is important, this is just a job"

We have health care for all since 1970 so that leave a lot of space in negotiations. I should mention that Québec as the higher unionized jobs in North-America, 40%. From the time I turned 55 till I retired I had 6 weeks vacation plus 14 payed holidays. In Québec our M4A plan do not cover eye care or dentist care but our collective agreement did $400 for glasses and $1000 for dentist care each year plus prescription drugs were covered at 80% and the price of drugs are so much cheaper in Canada. When I hear what US workers are going through it makes me sick. I live only 85 miles from the border, listening to this it could be anywhere in a third world country. Very sad.

Having to replace even a low level worker because they just can't keep up anymore as a result of stress is more costly than giving them a couple of weeks off in a year so they can relax and spend time with their families.

They can't just replace people as easily as you believe they can. Most jobs, even the simplest labour roles, often require a familiarity with the particular business and the other employees in order to work efficiently. The training time for lower end roles is short but two weeks is usually required for people to "settle in".
Giving that same two weeks for someone to have a holiday seems like good business. Unfortunately the US lab our market is not accustomed to such thinking.

The simplest labour roles need about 2 minutes training, e.g. pick up the part from the line, put it in this box, when it's full get a new box.
I've seen agency workers turn up, work for ten minutes, then decide they want to go home. No one is surprised or angry, it's expected with these type of jobs. Get on the phone, and get someone else.

I was quite peived when he told me he was not planing on taking any of his parental leave if he could avoid it since he thought he would have to use those days if his toddler got sick and the company had not told him about how various things worked in Sweden. He did get quite shocked when I told him that parents can take up to three days off if their child is sick without having to show a doctors notice and that would not cut into any vacations days or parental leave. I also had to educate him how we did not have "sick days" like in the US. if you are sick, you take the day off to get better. yes you do not get paid for the first day away but after that it is 80% of your wage until you get better. I also told him that by law the company is not allowed to refuse him to use any of those parental leave days if he told the company with 3 months notice.
So it ain't only US companies that does that stuff... Specially against people that have just moved to the country and does not know the rules yet.
Made him get into contact with the companies union rep and now when I meet him he has a much better understanding on how things work.

If too many people have had their holiday signed off and left the shift short then it is the manager or supervisor that will have to solve the problem. The staff are protected. The company can cancel holidays and it does happen but very rarely and only as a last resort. Most places will offer overtime to cover or simply "manage" the situation.

I worked in a retail company in the UK for 20 years and I have to say over that time there were gains and losses in contracts (loss of double time for bank holiday days) but overall it worked out OK for colleagues in general. Over 30 Hrs is full time but it didn't matter part time had exactly the same benefits as full time. In fact part time had some extra benefits if you were a part time colleague and they were contracted for 20Hrs but they worked say 30Hrs every week then if they took holiday they would be paid an average for the weeks of what they had worked for the year instead of their contract. So if they averaged 28Hrs they got paid 28Hrs when on holiday even on a lower contract. That worked up to 39Hrs. You accrued a bank of sick days (I think 1.25 days per uninterrupted month worked) up to 11 months banked on full pay depending upon length of service. Similarly paid holidays started on 5.4 weeks pro rata (including 7-8 bank holidays) going up to 6.8 weeks with length of service. Any overtime you did you got paid however under 39 hrs paid time over 39Hrs paid 1.5x or you could have the time back quite often I think they might of dropped it for just 1x now but I don't work there anymore. I wanted to go back into education and I used my annual holiday to essentially work a 4 day week for pretty much the whole year apart from their peak season for 2 years but I was paid full time just using my holiday for the missing day it mean I didn't have a long holiday in one chunk but it suited me. If you had a medical/dental appointment that couldn't be made outside work hours not a problem you are allowed to go, when my mum passed they gave me 3 days and then I took a couple more days holiday so with weekends I had 9 days to sort stuff out. In the UK you are legally allowed to have time off (unpaid) for appointments for non medical reasons if you can't arrange it outside work time (home visits/deliveries/hard cut!!! yep even a hair cut). I worked in a lot of locations and pretty much all the people I worked for were good. Maternity in the UK is 9 months paid (extra unpaid optional) and paternity is 2 weeks (with extra unpaid) I think it might be more I don't have kids so I'm not sure. As for COVID see you in 10 days don't come to work stay home. In fact normally if you have anything contagious that's anything other than a mild cold etc go home!!!

I left university with two classes and my thesis missing. The classes were 3D animation and Computergraphics. I applied for a job at a company in system integration. I was wholly overqualified, but I needed a job. First of all, I've sent out well over 100 applications, and they were the only ones responding.
Anyway, I sit down for the interview and they tell me they want to hire someone for an apprenticeship. I told them "Learn me into the job, it will take me 3 months and then you'll have a fully fledged employee." and I got the cop out answer that they look for someone with a degree and work experience to fill out the apprenticeship, which is to say: We hire you, use your expertise for 800 bucks a month, and shortly before the 3 years are over we fire you. That is a common thing companies do in germany. In fact, it's *normal*.

In Australia, if you take on casual/part time work, not as full time employee, you alsobdo not get sick leave, holiday pay, long service leave but the salary paid is given a boost over normal payrate of full time equivalent job pay rate. This is to offer some compensation for not receiving these extra benefits. Whether you receiving rates based on correct full time pay is a bit upto knowing normal fulltime wages for your job. However as has frequently been happening in past years companies are being caught not paying correct wages and in review of the underpayment the Casual rates are also assessed and many people have had payments, some in thousands of dollars, years after having been underplayed. The casual adjustment is set legally, not by the company. For example in my engineering job, doing casual hours even up to 20hrs per week I had around 20% above my prior retirement point salary. In theory here non full time employees are NOT disadvantaged by not having full-time position. By the way a new employee normally may have a number of months before confirmed full time, but during that period normal full time pay applies. Yet the employer has a period to assess your position and whether to put you on full time, or let you go without extra reasons to terminate your position. Mostly the full-time job is given, and usually good reason will be provided to not put you on full time. You are however never payed under the rate for your job. Yes mistakes occur and if caught underpaying, catchup payments must be made and the company suffered fines and reputation loss, as the underpayment is made publicly known if it is normally a commonly known company. Small businesses may not suffer publicly but certainly within their employee and customer base, so a company is ill advised to be doing illegal underpaying.

I have cancer. I was off work for 5 months. They told me if I went past my second medical on August 10 I would be fired, so I went back to work, even though I wasn't ready.

I'm always amazed that American employers don't appear to have heard of the principle of 'enlightened self-interest', surely it must be obvious that by treating workers fairly and being empathetic to them as individuals they will foster a more happy, loyal and therefore more productive workforce?

That one about being called to cover during a holiday? Yeah, I had that too. Was on my two-week holiday, got a letter stating I had gone "awol" the past week, and when I called was told there was "no proof of approved holiday" DESPITE it being on the system, which I could check on my work portal. They also tried not to pay me for it, but I did in the end after a lot of fighting and showing proof of the approved holiday. Also when I've been of sick, sighed by a doctor, and sending in the proof, and they reply stating they got the paperwork... oh no, I still get letters claiming that I've just gone awol and management "have no idea what I'm talking about" when I call. Working for ASDA was a nightmare. Never again.

I've been struggling with work lately (not because of my work, I love them, love working there), struggling with sick kids etc and taking time off, but watching this video has made me so grateful to live and work in Aotearoa and not US ... We really don't know how lucky we are down here....

Back in the mid 70's I took up a job with Rockwell International in the UK.
It was ridiculous. I worked in finance and our working environment was crazy. We started work at 7:30am and hardly ever left before 8pm. Sometimes I'd get back in the morning to find guys who'd worked all night...no sleep. At month end we usually got home around midnight or 1am and weekend working was the norm. I left despite them offering me a job in the States. I was newlywed and hardly ever saw my wife and a social life was impossible.
I've always worked long hours in stressful situations but Rockwell was just insane. What kind of a life was that?

Loving your comments. As a worker in the UK 38 hrs is a full week. Plus 25-30 days paid leave included. Sick pay also included and we have Universal Healthcare. Wow couldn't do these hours with no basic rights.

"Do you hear the people sing, singing a song of angry men. It is the music of a people who will NOT be slaves again" FFS America, everyone knows the problems, nobody does anything. The founding fathers must be spinning in their graves.
