He does look like Johnny depp,I thought so too. He is a master. It must be difficult to challenge yourself as a painter when you have already gone so far. excellent work. I would love to have him as a teacher. Sean, are you always in CA, are you ever in NY?
Why are you people asking Sean questions? Can't you people read? This is a video of Sean doing a demo at a workshop a million years ago, this isn't even his UA-cam channel. This is the channel for the guy who ran the workshop sheesh.
Amazing, one thing I'd like to ask, when you did the underpainting in monochrome, did you let the paint dry before you added colour on top of it, or did you add it straight away?
A likeness you can only dream of, hence your bitter tone. No, the real issues are not ideas,, Having the ability to create likeness when one chooses to, displaying the skill to do so. Ideas, knowledge, technique and individual expression. Thats where it's at. Everyone has their own way of doing things, (including holding a paint brush). This guy is an individual and he is expressing that through whatever way he can. At a young age he already has the fundamentals down, what do you have?
Hmmm. For someone who is trying hard to sound astute, it is interesting that you would use a reply to announce that you aren't replying. The point is, Sean Cheetham's paintings are obviously gorgeous and he is quite talented. You reduce your arguments to how he holds his paintbrush, and ridiculously judging tattooed people as not being "real human beings". Your responses are irrational, and stink of bitter jealousy.
First you say the real issues are not ideas. Then you say "Ideas, ..(etc).. That's where it's at". I suggest you clarify your thoughts before you comment.
You heard it here first. Getting a tattoo is like shouting "Hey, I am Stupid! And don't ever forget it!" Yes, if I were looking for a model, a primary consideration would be to find a Real human being, not one who fell for a pathetic Trend.
1] Being astute, I was waiting for that response. You know exactly what I meant: a reply on the "merits". But your above comment had none. I could have written a long chapter on the failure of this type of painting, and on this portrait in particular. Since you criticize me for writing so little ("reducing my arguments"), I can see that you are clamoring for more. The painting is not gorgeous. It is awkward in composition (and other ways), and the badly held brush is indicative of this. [cont'd]
2] The paint is pasty and superficially handled. Paintings like this are a dime a dozen. We call them "illustrative". But I prefer to give constructive advice, as I have done here. I could offer hundreds more suggestions, but something tells me it won't be well received. You don't explain what I "stink of bitter jealousy" over. It can't be the tattoos, because they always detract from the humanity of the individual. And it can't be this artist's "talent", there's not much of that in evidence.
Quite painful to me, to watch you hold a brush like that. But more to the point, painting should be about more than depicting a likeness. I would start by avoiding any sitter sporting "ink".
A demo? A demo?? Hahaha. Oh I get it, his "real" paintings are so much better! Sure I know criticizing his literal holding of the brush sounds silly, but only to those who don't know better. Ok, let's get serious. Materials, brushes, grounds, rabbit skin glue and all the other trappings are all distractions. The real issue is ideas, and knowing what makes a good painting. Notice I did NOT say rendering a sitter's superficial likeness. He has the likeness, but little else.
one of the most talented painters on u-tube...hands down...thank you for the inspiration
That likeness, my God!!! Simply stunning. *goes back to practicing*
Sean Cheetham and Jeremy Lipking. Two of my favorite artists, both superlative, and the epitome of excellence in their craft.
This deserves more views. Far more impressive than others.
Sean Cheetham is amazing. He's my idea of a truly authentic artist.
Congratulations, Sean you are a marvel artist!
sooooo cool ! I luv your paintings
Beautiful work. The technique is directed by the idea. Some people drive Buicks; others drive a Porsche.
There you go, the honorable way of making art, either youre able to pull it or not, and he does in a aceptable way.

Pretty fucking impressive for alla prima.
You sir, are a very competent oil painter.

excellent work. I would love to have him as a teacher. Sean, are you always in CA, are you ever in NY?
Amazing def inspiration !
AWESOME DUDE!!!
@Fureatenshi He tones the canvas w a Olive Green, Alizarin Crimson, and Indian Yellow mixture, thinned down w turp.
Muy bueno!
really love the one at 10:04, self portrait? love the simplicity.
A few very strong points here, that could have been finished works in themselves: 2:15 and 5:52. Fantastic skill, nothing but respect :)
LOVE YOU;RE STYLE.
Master ... the new John Singer Sargent

superb
@curtmastor Of course. The fundamentals of any endeavor is the key to success.
Wow that's amazing! I love Cheetham!
Who knows how to mix the colour at the beginning for toning the canvas?
Is it colour and a lot of oil...?
@curtmastor How do you expect to be able to paint without knowing how to draw?? It's the most essential step for any artist.
Que jodida obra de arte .
great painter
Nice!
@whenfreedomfell This method can be learned at any stage of your learning of paint application.
Thank you for describing the background colours. Which colours were on his palette? Thanks.
Thank you man!
wow!
where can i purchase your art ??? I have to own one of you incredible pieces !!!
Wow, I'm still not sure which if any were photographs.
Sei bravo.
Can someone give me a link to download these songs?
That's Sean's band.
you're amaziiiing .. O.O
Awesome vid, just wondering how the canvas was toned so quickly? Is there a lean medium mixture that can dry within mins or something?
Very cool. What was the actual time spent?
is that turpentine or linseed oil used to lay the initial tones and to kill the white of the canvas.
Now who on Earth thinks Picasso can paint ? Well done Sean seeing is believing and you just got anew fan !
Me - www.pablo-ruiz-picasso.net/period-first.php
You 'da man cuz!
Amazing, one thing I'd like to ask, when you did the underpainting in monochrome, did you let the paint dry before you added colour on top of it, or did you add it straight away?
Which color did you start with? (painting empty canvas and drawing figure)
is alla prima the technique or the colour??
Also very edgy...I love it !!! bringing the classic to today.....
Danil Miller
You're pretty good when it comes to Brazil?
wow
@whenfreedomfell stick with it..you will have good days and bad days but hard work will always pay off.
did you record the whole process or you took pictures?
which colour are you starting with? Brown?
what is the color of the undercoating in this painting?
Wow, how did you get Kevin Smith to sit still for that long?
Bad vídeo framing!! The head of the model should be seen!
A likeness you can only dream of, hence your bitter tone.

hi sir may i know the all materials needed?thank you so much.
wow 8:54
I'm a professional artist painter and all I'm saying is wow !!!
does one need to posses the ability to draw and illustrate before delving into realism painting?
@peke1955 4-5 Hours with breaks.
The best definition for all of this would be "bad ass"
I will subscribe
Look Mom! With only one hand! :-)
That dude is intense looking lol Beautifully painted though.
Waw Ltd so real
@r0nswanson1 Winsor Newton

As your comment is incomprehensible, it is not worthy of a reply.
peccato per la musica, sarebbe stato più interessante il parlato...
You like rock, huh?
Pues si eres chingón. Presenta a la modelo del sofá.

Insecure and jealous much?

I'd like to see u do a painting of this quality in 4/5 hours.. idiot.
And isn't this just a demo??? (eye roll)
