This is one of your best solutions! I know many of us have been physically decluttering for a while, but our digital clutter is largely untouched. I love the idea of just doing a first sweep to just keep or delete. 👌
This is the best video about digital decluttering on the internet!!! Thank you thank you🥺🥺💗💗💗 !!!! Your questions are the best they work like magic. If your computer died how negatively would your life be affected?
I have been putting off 10 years worth of digital clutter but this has inspired me to get it done! The idea of sorting into broad categories is what sold it to me. Thanks!
thank you so much great Information I will have to look over this and do and pause my way through this as I do each step! not because it is confusing you made it all very clear, but because it is going to take me so long I have over 18,000 photos on my little phone. thanks again xo lori
I use the 26 folder method where you name the folders from A-Z. Everything related to my Etsy shop is in its own folder in the main E folder, everything for Patreon is in P, ECT.
@@HowToGYST yeah, I liked it so much I did it with both my main laptops. It's a space saver as far as the desktop is concerned. I go through each folder about once a month to periodically de-clutter.
Makes perfect sense, and most logical sense, but still you have to have 26 folders, may be we can create sub folders so each Folder can have 2 items so you end up with 13 main folders and 13 sub folders, like Folder AB, Folder CD, Folder EF etc etc.
What on earth is the point of adding extra folders by alphabet letter when File Explorer alphabatizes the folders you already have AUTOMATICALLY?? Now you just can't see where anything is behind the first letter folder and have to use extra clicks to get to it!
I have multiple folders where I have moved my full desktop and have not organized it. I am the type that has to organize as a go because its more intimidating later. Thank you for your tips.
Problem is remembering how you saved a file under a rename, for example you have a file with a series of letters and number string, and its form a supplier who supplies parts, and you may at the time file it under the part name or under the supplier name or for what client that part was bought for and you might file under that client's name, so now this is where you are stuck trying to remember under which file name that invoice might be.
I really need to do this. Thanks for the tips. Question though.... do you really rename all of your photo’s😱? I don’t know how I should do that. We make folders for year and month and special occasions we give a seperate folder in that specific month like summer holiday or wedding or something like that. Only workrelated folders are hard to name for me. All photo’s and video’s for instagram or website... I still haven’t figured out a system and it’s a mess....🙈🤔 all help is welcome!
Great question! No, if you’ve got them in good folders so you can find what you need, you don’t need to rename. 🙂 It’s really just for specific ones you’ll want to reference again so a quick search would be the quickest way of finding them, especially if you haven’t reached the level of folder organisation you have. 🙂 For example, I have photos of a rental property I own. I’ve renamed those so I can quickly find them if someone asks about renting, without having to click through folders.
I’m listening to you say delete if you don’t need it. If your computer died would it be a big deal and I am sitting here cringing. I’m a real estate agent so I have contracts on my computer and they stay for ever. But my work requires me to have the contracts so that’s a different story.
Move them all to an 'action' folder and mark as read. Start fresh. You can always go into the folder and skim through for any important ones, deleting the ones that aren't (and if you haven't read them, I'm guessing the majority fall into this category), but they won't be cluttering up your inbox. If they're newsletters, unsubscribe.
Could you please help. I moved files to the sorting box and when I tried to move them out they said they were open in another program and the action could not be completed. Any suggestion? Now it worked
@@HowToGYST Im an editor and transcriber so I have a ridiculous amount of videofiles that I have on a 20tb nas. I was looking for some clips and it took me goddam near 40 minutes so I decided to organise it over the weekend.
I feel your pain. I'm also trying to organise all my video files so I can find them more easily. I spent a long time recently adding keywords to the 'comments' section in the 'Get Info' area of each video (on Mac) only to discover that they all disappeared afterwards. 😭
@@HowToGYST Hi, "Total" means there is no opportunity of improvement but making another video. I suggest you read all the previous comments before me : no one has managed to organize their files in "SECONDS", it's a false promise. I am sure you meant well but your "in seconds" method is everything but "in seconds". It is completely off the mark. Sorry again but when I mean total, I mean total.
I threw away everything that did not spark joy. The bills, the mirrors, the bathroom scale and the vacuum cleaner. I feel so much happier
🤣🤣Brilliant!
Sounds good to me! 😁
this is PURE GENIUS. Already started. My folder is "Downunder". I found user manuals' pdf for devices I don't use anymore since 2008.
Brilliant! I bet you were able to free up a lot of space!

Perfect timing! I already had ‘declutter macbook’ on my to-do list for tomorrow! In anticipation of starting uni in a few weeks. Great tips. Thanks.
This was such a game changer. Thank you very much. Still working in that Sorting Hat Folder. My IT guy was like, wow, you cleared your desktop. LOL!!
Ah, I'm so glad it helped!
I love this process so straightforward and simple to do. Digital Clutter be gone.
Works like a charm. I still use it.

Really intriguing idea. I think we save way too much "just in case.". Thanks!

Definitely easier if you do it as you go. But if there’s a big backlog, I find it great to just draw a line and start again as best I can.
Thank you, this was very helpful
I really need a sorting hat. My computer is a mess! :D
No time like the present. ;)
Me too
This is very helpful. Just what I need, in fact. Thank you.
Yay. Glad to hear it.
I created a sorting folder as you suggest last time. I don't think I've looked in that folder since. I think it's time to start deleting today😃
Go for it! I have to clear mine out too.
I want a sorting hat icon! How do you do that?
loved this so much!! thank you for the detailed steps :)
I use Listary for quick search and I LOVE it. I wonder why Windows Search doesn't work as good.
Wonderful!!!! How do I create a graphic to represent the "Sorting Hat"??? I love the sorting hat graphic!!!
I just saved one I found on the internet. A quick Google should help you find one you like. Just try to get one with a transparent background. 🙂
Wow! So helpful! Thanks...
I love this idea!! Thank you so much!!❤❤
Love the name of the channel.
Thanks! 😁
BRILLIANT!!!
do you have any toughts on your mail inbox? how to organise that? def gonna try these tips for the documents on my laptop
Thanks! Also, check Folder Marker tool
Perfect! Thank you!!

I unsubscribe emails while I watch the news but there is always more the next day! I guess my digital life is not much! I am rather low tech....

That’s where the search feature comes in handy. 🙂
Amazing thank you. Your brand name is awesome
Thanks so much.
I did that... now there's lots of folders in the newly renamed "overwhelm" folder. Interestingly, the older stuff is what l want to keep...
Well done :)
I set a timer for social media. And I've even gone as far as deleting from my phone.

Depending on how many you moved, they may not all have finished copying over yet. Once that's done you should be free to move them out again. =)
How to Get Your Shit Together thanks it was a large desktop folder, and it did move eventually to be seriously de cluttered.
I did eventually remove 10GB of files, more than 10 minutes😁
Wow! That's amazing!

Ouch. What kinds of files are they? And how are you storing them all on one device?

Why does it take over 10 minutes to supposedly teach us how to clear your desktop in 5 SECONDS?!
For context. And to teach you what to do if you want to take it a few steps further.
5 seconds, then why the video is so long?
You are charming
