Thank you for posting this series. I believe that "Andean Abyss" is a brilliant game, in part because it demonstrates how unwinnable this conflict was for all the various factions involved, and that the only way out of the morass was through a negotiated settlement. For me at least, the game is not about winning so much as showing the other sides that winning is actually stalemate--enough of a stalemate--a puzzle that yields such little advantage that each side starts thinking about options that involve stopping the violence. That's pretty much how the conflict evolved in actuality. It's an excellent game, and an even better simulation.
As a basic tactic, in the early game I always try to get my bases out on the board first with Cultivate and ignore shipments/Process unless circumstances dictate that it makes sense. Is there an advantage to getting shipments out first and *then* work on bases? Good tip on rallying on Cali early on! As FARC, I do look longingly at those extra base spaces in those 3 spots near Bogotá, and I do often hint to the government that they might want to Eradicate there.. ;) One tip: pop guys into coastal spaces early (including the cities) because of the card that gives resources for pieces in coastal spaces. It might be the same card that says to Remove Cartels from coastal, I'd have to check.

I played this game the first time recntly, as Cartels. It was rough with so few forces but an event or two and we are swiiming in cash :) Militarily weak but we are not trying to take over half the map.

Eventually, maybe. I’m only comfortable doing these types of things with games I’ve played a LOT. So one day I’ll do Fire in the Lake, probably.
