Many thanks for a fantastic how to on repairing the Sherpa 50. Shame on Goal Zero for not making their products a little more friendly were upgrades and repairs are concerned.

It is actually quite friendly to repairs - mind you, they could have permanently bricked the battery management IC once the battery went bad. If they had gone with a TI bqxxxx BMS this repair would have been 10 times more complicated, involving fiddling with I2c and requiring the pack protection code to unbrick the BMS. What they should have done is to have the battery on a connector and sell the battery as a replacement part.

Just wanted to say thank you for your video on rebuilding the Sherpa 50. I followed your steps and it worked. I have one comment for those that are going to try to rebuild your own device, If you have not practiced hand soldering please do so before you tear your device apart, secondly the tolerances are pretty tight when putting your device back together so make sure you have aligned your batteries tightly so that the battery pack will fit back into your device and you can close the unit back together.
Overall the tutorial was great and you saved me a lot of money.

Best video I've ever used. I followed the directions carefully and my unit is back running better than new. The most difficult part is getting the batteries back into the case. Solder carefully and align the batteries carefully - it's a tight fit!

Just did this upgrade using this video and my newfound skills with a small spotwelder for the strips. Battery form before placing in the case was critical and the tolerance isn't very much. But, once done the Sherpa 50 bounced back to life and lives to charge and recharge again. Many thanks for the video - it was better set out than a couple web sites. The sweet smell of success.

One quirk i found out when fixing these: The voltage rating for the charging input is wrong as stated on the case (15-25v) - the display will start blinking and the current be cut off when the voltage is above 20ish volts. Maybe they meant to say "nominal voltage" of a connected solar panel, but you can't use a 24v power brick for charging. Thanks for the video, was very helpful.

Thank you so much for making this video. I have an old Sherpa 50 that seems to be still working but am concerned about it's life cycle. Am happy to see that I can use it and my solar panel for some time to come without spending a few extra hundred dollars on a new one and creating far more waste than I have to.

I bought a used sherpa 50 with nomad 13 solar at 25 bucks. The battery did the same when i plugged in. Thats why i got it so cheap. Well i let it sit with the charger when i reached home and in a few hours it showed 40 percent and the battery blinking light went away. It has been working normally now. :)

Awesome video. I got one of these used to go with my Katabatic tent which the solar panel fits, and had to buy used. My unit works but nice to know there's an option to repair. Might upgrade the cells if these test to be near end of life. One question, my research shows the chemestry is a bit different on the cells you reference. If the voltages and other specs are the same, will it matter if the chemestry type is different in the new 18650 cells compared with the originals?

My sherpa 100 is great works fine, charges etc but when I add the AC/inverter on the side and turn it on I get the blinking battery error the same one as in this video come up and both the 12v and laptop lights flash, when I turn it off it is fine. My friend, love your informative and expert video. Could you offer some advice on how to use the chaining cable outlet to hook up to an outboard battery? We all know there is no need to have 2 expensive Sherpa units to chain. Just one Sherpa unit and a simple extra lithium battery would be great. There is no need to replicate the expense of another unit with a charge controller and all of the outlets. Could you lay out the directions of how to do that correctly?

Thanks so much for this video! I followed your instructions and the unit has power - built-in flashlight works, power button and USB light works - but I hit a hiccup: USB and power light stay lit when you shut off the unit using the power button. The battery condition display does shut off but the only way to disable all lights is to pull the fuse. Also, when on, the battery condition display is back-lit, but blank - so no way to figure out what its charge level is or if there is a potential error condition...any suggestions on how I might troubleshoot this? I feel like it might be something simple but I'm not super technical.

Just a few questions that I hope you have a chance to answer.
1, will you spec the battery you used? I know the size and capacity, but not sure of protected or unprotected (also not sure of what that means).
2, will you give a little more info on the nickel strip you are using such as the width and thickness and where you procure it?
3, are higher capacity than what you’ve used cells worth using?
4, soldering is definitely cheaper than buying a welder. Are there any special precautions when soldering?
Thanks for your time answering these questions. I have 2 Sherpa 50’s and recently, they’ve both stopped working due to the bad battery icon and would like to refurb them.

its a great thing to revive electronics in general, altought i wouldnt weld or solder the new cells, i rather would buy some 18650 cell holders and put them on the case so i can easy replace them in the future (also would give the advantage to recharge them externally)
but in general if something has a bad battery and you can open it: replace the battery instead of throwing it away

    • @stevec5000

Or better yet get cells with solder tabs welded onto them. The 99 Cents Only Store had one cell power banks for $1.99 and I've been getting them and taking the cells out to use for repairs.

You hit the nail on the head! You get what you pay for. Most of the cheap cells (like the "Ultra Fire" 18650s) are absolute crap. They say their capacity is 5000mAh, or even 8000mAh, but that is a 100% lie. I tested some and found they are only 500-600mAh - JUNK. If you want quality stick with a name brand like Panasonic and expect to pay a little more. Buy once, cry once.

    • @janaltensen902
      @janaltensen902 6 років тому

yeah the ultra fire cells are the worst ones
its a shame that you cant fit cell holders in there, i like the abillity to use the cells in other equipment as well if needed so you can swap the cells around whereever you need them
