I was selling whiskey one night at a concert william lee and the goldens. Illegal whiskey. 40$ a qt. After all the negotian were made,Mr Golden pulled out a wad of money. He humbly said sir, could I have a fruit jar of cold water.I repied oh thats on me. He calmy said, its on me. There was no money exchanged that night in Knoxville. What a super class act!
I'm a 70's guy,, and we had it best! No other generation had it as good as we did! Fact! The big war was over ww2 that is for about 20 something years, and modern technology sprang up,, from better stoves, washing machines, lol,, to t.v., radios, recording devices, and medicines, and everything else, that NO OTHER GENERATION ENJOYED! And the music that was created, showed a beauty and love, that is now sadly taken for granted by the young ones!
love this man, and his group ....so many songs over so many years ...so many moments William Lee was always close by with a tune to soothe .His tunes were always exactly what I needed to hear in troubled times, and happy times too ,he would always just say what I was kinda feeling,I always thought it was strange ,but it was the way it was ,cant really explain it properly...long may he continue to have that sort of effect on people A truly incredible talent sent from God .....Thank you God
...this song evokes emotions within myself as a man of 68 years old I have trouble reconciling with...I am caused to realize that my time draws to a close on God's earth but still being full of foolish pride cannot bring myself to admit my failures and embittered shortcomings that should come with some apologies. The song makes my old being realize it's pending mortality and my inability at this age to do some things I promised myself to do before I got old...and before I die!
I seen the boys in tunica not to long ago. I could sit and listen to this man sing his heart out all night. Love ur voice. God bless your soul brother. Keep up the great music.
William Lee Golden...A PROUD BREWTON ALABAMA NATIVE...which is about 50 miles south of my hometown of Satsuma Alabama. I REALLY want this played at my funeral...I feel every word of this song in my soul.
@@travispeavy3629 Do you know if you're any kin to Ray Peavy Jr. or Ray Peavy Sr. Ray Jr is my age 51 & we graduated from Satsuma High School in '88...his dad, Ray Sr lived in Saraland but is originally from Brewton & went to school with William Lee Golden.
I was at the taping for this, WLG was a gracious guest and let me take some pics with myself and my family with him. Thanks for bringing this to the net.
One of the best beards out there! Funny I have been listening to nothing but bass singers all my life and finally decided to look him up and find out who he is and amazed that he still sings so well at 83
When this song was originally recorded, I read that it was done in one take so that the raw emotion could be felt right away. If the song took multiple takes, the emotion may not have been the same. William Lee nailed it.
My God this song spoke of all the things that have been in my old heart for years now. As my days grow short, I could have never said it better, or had something make me face my regrets more head on.
WHAT A GREAT SONG,MAKES A MAN THINK ABOUT THINGS HE NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO DO IN LIFE BUT WANT'S TO DO BEFORE HE PASSES.. NOBODY CAN DELIVER A SONG ANY BETTER THAN"WILLIAM LEE GOLDEN" WITH THE OAKS OR SOLO HE IS SOLID GOLD EITHER WAY.I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!
There's something in William Lee's live performances that can't be captured in the recording studio....this song fits him to a T....and expresses the spirit for life that lives in him....and he has the fortunate ability to convey this to the listener..... enjoy
Just heard this song on the radio for the first time; looked it up and was reading through the comments and came across yours from a year ago. You doing okay?
Oh my goodness!!! I probably already commented on this...BUT... William Lee Golden Is the most beautiful man both inside and out that I believe exists in this world!!! I met him many years ago (like 1982) and he blew me away then and still does to this day!! I think his voice and the way he delivers a song is AMAZING!!! Not to mention how amazingly beautiful he is...
We saw the Oak Ridge Boys a couple of weeks ago here in New Hampshire. They were great and William did a number of lead songs. He sounds great and got the most standing ovations. It was a great show. Love these guys.
Allison, I'm 51 yrs old now...you are so right. My great grandmother used to say all the time when I was a little boy..."the older you get, the farther in time you go back in your mind". I never really understood what she meant then...BUT I SURE DO KNOW WHAT SHE MEANT NOW!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Nice song. That's the country I remember. And that's why I'm writing and singing myself. I'm trying to bring em back. I too have a Before I die song. I wasn't aware other people had used that title until now. I guess I'm on the right track. Thanks God.
Great song. INteresting how the 1st verse has some light dreams(seeing a baseball stadium, floating on Miss. etc) and then gets heavy in the 2nd verse talking about something he needs forgiveness for from his Mama and listening to his Dad. William Lee Golden has always been able to deliver a song.
Thank you so much for posting this. Tell me who sings with more heart than William?? And he is still going strong 40 years later. He will always be my all time favorite.
this is the first time I've heard his voice ever, I can never hear him in the Oak Ridge Boys, Richard and the other two guys drown him out in all the songs I've heard them in
The music of today should be like the music it was used to be...What,s happening of the genre today. 2000s music are synthetic music and are almost trash!!! Thanks for this great work. Please do more on 70s, 80s and 90s hits they are all the epitome of true music.
I was lucky to meet William Lee Golden at the Denver International Airport in 2003. He was wearing an American flag jacket and American flag boots, but nobody recognized him. It took me several minutes to muster up the courage and I nervously approached him as he waited in line to purchase a small "Denver" refrigerator magnet. Before I was able to say anything, he cut me off and said "Yep. I'm him. Please don't make too much of a commotion because these good people just want to go about their day without a disturbance." I laughed and we waited in line together silently. After he made his purchase (he paid with a $100 bill!), he turned to leave the shop. Right before he exited he hesitated near the door and sang a few lines of "Elvira" to all the customers and employees! A true gentleman! The cashier said that he forgot his receipt and I said I'd take it to him but I kept it. I framed it and it hangs in my kitchen to this day to remind me of the brief moment I shared with my favorite entertainer.
Oh Yeah...In 1982 William Lee's beard and hair were so amazingly soft and I told him so....I can only imagine that they are the same way now!!! William Lee you will always be my CRAZY crush!!!! GREAT memories!!!!!
William Lee Golden's performances are so flawless that each word he sings resonates deeply within my heart. Perfection itself.
Something really special when a powerful song meets a powerful singer!
26 year old here.... and I loved this song.
me too

Glad to see William is still performing solo as well as with the group.

Thanks for singing and also for the oak ridge boys. It's a comfort
My dad used to listen to y'all before he died. Mama's gone now too.
Me too. I feel your pain.
I LOVE this song. The Oaks are my favorite country group. William Lee is still singing with the best of them.

A fine song, sung by a troubadour of our time....Billy Lee always had soul! This is great!
This world is not my home because I am just passing through on a journey to another world, this world is just a school where I learn where I am tested.
I can't believe people hit the thumbs down. This is pure class

I will defend William Lee, until the day I die. He is a true southern gentleman and has a heart of gold. Not to mention all the talent he holds.
