Lightning strikes in old oak

- Logging old protected Oak after its hit by Lightning. There were two companies of the work. Frederik Juul Simon from Træservice Grouppen ApS and Certified TreeClimber Thomas Hegner from Hegner Træpleje (Hegner Wood Care) did a fantastic job. A team in lift. Another team was responsible for climbing. A third team was on the ground. The Oak was more than 24 meters high.

I have seen lots of amateurs keeping always busy.... but these guys are professionals, damn good at what they do. That was a monster tree in a difficult place. Well done !
We had a huge, lightening-struck oak that had to come down in tight quarters, so similar to this, but in the Chicago suburbs. I searched for contractors to take it down and found really expensive companies with boom trucks and huge machines. Ended up going with the least expensive-a huge group of Mexicans who did an amazing job. I was so impressed. I watched this big bunch of little guys swarmed the tree cutting it all down with just ropes and chainsaws. They worked their butts off and did it really efficiently. Without triumphant background music.
I have seen Mexicans do great tree work, roofing and masonry.....they dont dick around either....

For those who think this tree could be saved, note that it clearly does not have leaves yet at 6:40 the other broad leaf deciduous trees are in full leaf. This tree was struck a year or more earlier and is dead. No leaves ! At 0:50 we see the lighting damage all the way down to the bottom of the tree. At 3:50 you see more damage far down the trunk from the strike. Major root damage from electricity may cause the tree to decline and die without significant above ground damage. The lighting traveled clear down to the roots, and killed massive amounts of the tree. Though the very bottom looks sound as they climb on it, this tree is dead.

Bloody brave. I tried to take the lower limbs off one of my trees from a ladder, had to come down I was shaking so much.such a lovely feeling to feel the ground under your feet. I hope that the timber was planked and used

You have to be some kind of special crazy to climb in those trees. Well done, that was fun to watch.
When a tree is so large that it doesn't have branches anymore, just smaller trees growing from.
Also, from the looks of that thin blowout line in the bark from the lightning, it appears that the lightning traveled through the outside of the tree.
Sure, it would require some... involved care (mainly due to the size and height of the tree itself) but it more than likely could have recovered.
Atleast that's the impression I got from what I was able to assess from the video. I'm sure that if I was there in person, I'd see more detail and have more information to go by, and believe me, I'm not doubting the decision of the professionals in the video. It's simply better to err on the side of caution when it comes to a tree of this magnitude.
I more than keenly aware of just how heavy these things can get.
Regardless, 5:26 it looks like it would have slowly started to rotting away internally whether it was struck by lightning or not.
That looks like very dangerous job, day in and day out. It appears you really have pay attention to not get killed. Impressive.

That's a shame, that's a massive and beautiful oak. That oak is probably as old as the country. RIP mighty oak. I hope it was used to make a ton a good lumber though.
sir MAXX not that old but yes, it is a shame seeing old trees such as this be felled, though there are few more justifiable reason to cutting down a tree that has been struck by a lightning. This is most surely turned into magnificent lumber
And in its place can grow a lovely new tree. It is called "the cycle of life!"
The same "cycle of life" that provides us with beautiful oak lumber along the way!.
With a Trunk like That , had it Not been injured by Lightning , It might have been a " Good base " for a " Tree House " !
Not every Species of trees are strong enough , But Oaks Certainly are !!
By the way, has anyone checked w/ a University on Trees ? ! It might have been that This Tree could have been Saved !!
@@crayfish9945 Yes. It not only might have been, surely it was possible. The felling was not necessary. As so often these days, the saw is picked up too quickly without even trying to preserve the life of the tree as can be seen in the joy of the worker when the tree lies on the ground. This is nothing to be proud of, it's a shame.
Good things come from trees if they are old or if they or not. They grow all over the world so we can use them for housing, paper products , heating and air more things. Just remember we need use them before they rot and can not be used in a productive way now that's a crying same. Just remember to replant . Happy cutting my friends

If you pause it at 5:50 I think you can see where the lightning hit the tree. Pretty impressive if you think about it.

That tree has probably seen more than a few families come and go through the years. I sure hope it wasn't removed unnecessarily. I've seen several take lightening strikes and were still fine years later.
Yes it is..seeing a big old tree everyday and then its gone one day is sad & empty

I did an oak (white) in NC. years ago 18 or 20 inches , split into 4 rails standing

Good job, did you hit the fence when you felled her or just destroyed the rather neat log pile. :) I would of brought the limbs right back to the stem then felled the stem.

+Nick Pearson sometimes the limbs are left on so the log wont roll when it hits the ground.

That tree was ENORMOUS!
What happened to all the wood that was taken down. I would have used some of it to make a table or something to remember the tree with. Beautiful old tree.

not sure why they think they need to cut down a tree just cuz it gets struck by lightning. I know of a tree that's been struck multiple times and still alive and it's a pine tree they're not as tough as oak trees it's a shame that's a big beautiful Oak
I hope these Tree Cutters weren't " Stupid " enough to merely cut up that trunk !! there's a lot of usable High Quality Oak to be " Milled " out of that !
Both for; " Furniture And Artifacts ". Not to mention " Interior [ housing ] Trim " !

Did any of the tree get sawed into planks ? What a huge tree. There could have been some really wide boards.
Did the main trunk get milled for building timber?

I don't know how old it is but the oak tree I have in my yard measures 33 1/2 ft. around at six feet from the ground. I don't know the diameter. I think it has something to do with Pi.

Would have been a nice followup to watch it get milled up. Theres a lot of tree services now that have added a portable band mill crew for on site lumber cut up.
sotxbob The tree actually got milled afterwards. It was quater sawn and the result is some of the most beautiful planks I've ever seen. The planks has dried in open air for two years now and is ready to go to the kiln to get the last moist out of the wood. The once beautiful living tree will soon be ready to live another 200 years as woodworkers turn it into high quality furniture in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Why did you not use the crane to put it down instead of letting it fall?
What do you do to divide the tree up. Is it just disposed of or is there market value for furniture or for building.
I would expect it to have a pretty high market value, as a single oak staircase costs in excess of £15,000, and you could get plenty of staircases from such a large tree, but the value obviously depends upon the extent of the damage done by the lightning strike, which may have been quite significant.
+ThatAnonymous UA-camGuy I guess you're right. After watching several more videos like this, it would be stupid not to try and sell the wood from these trees. I love oak as a building material. .
its seems easy but to process the lumber in some ones yard is hard and so is moving the tree out
