@Eric Andrews : First off you don’t know what you’re talking about! That’s an opinion not fact. That being said I will say that I hated Randy’s tone but till this day I’m blown away crazy about about his playing. On the other hand someone like Dicky Betts had an amazing tone with an old Marshall through Altec 417’s and his PAF pickups. I played through one of Duane’s original rigs and that had D120 JBL’s and that was great too. The reason most guys like Celestion’s mostly 25 watt Green Backs and Vintage 30’s is because those speakers color the sound and distort very easily as opposed to an Altec or JBL. When I worked at Kramer and BC Rich we’d have guys come in talking shit that shredded playing metal back in the day and I’d plug them into a JMP head and 4X12 loaded with EV’s and all that talking shit would cease because these guys couldn’t play a lick through that rig. They’d ask for a BOSS distortion pedal and want 8’s or 9’s on their guitars. Not the 10’s or 11’s on a Les Paul with PAF’s. So opinion is your’s but remember for all intensive purposes an old Celestion or Jensen is a shit speaker that us players like cause we can manipulate it with our pickups and amps. Back in the day an E120 JBL, a Guass or EVM was far more honest! D120’s being Alnico and less wattage or Altec’s being the same we’re still being manipulated but still more honest than the Celestion’s or Jensen’s.

MUCH better representation of what the amp sounds like out of the box as opposed to the video from Paul from Guitar World, where it appears hitting with the D+ and possible EQ to get the real live sound and much more gain and sizzle that this clip.
