Plot: 'The Ninja Turtles (Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello) are on a mission to retrieve the Life Transformer Gun from Shredder, a device that could restore their sensei Splinter back to his human form.'
Alongside the arcade game (also developed by Konami), it was one of the first video games based on the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, being released after the show's second season.
I visited all places where possible, in case you wonder why I backtrack at some parts.

I think it’s telling the Cowabunga Collection has both save states AND a rewind feature.
Cowabunga Collection is up there with the Namco Museum Collections in terms of value. It deserved way more love than it got.
The Cowabunga Collection also has button input lag problems, unless there was an update/patch that fixed that.
AVGN: You can just walk over it. First episode I ever watched with him.
I love AVGN too! I think the first episode I saw was Bart vs. the Space Mutants and the World.
Why can’t a turtle swim?
@@heavy4956 Why can’t I land a plane?
Why don't the weapons do anything?
Same, before youtube!
Ah yes, my childhood pain.
Props to the player for letting the overworld music play for a bit before going into the first sewer section.
Happy 40th anniversary to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
It's also the 40th anniversary of Transformers, Ghostbusters, Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins, Karate Kid, and Police Academy.

The riff on rhe opening song sounds just like Queen Stone cold crazy
I’m glad I was able to watch this and figure out the way to past the under water lvl. And won this game
Finally, a proper longplay of this game and not a speedrun like your old video of this game.

For me, the final level was the swimming one. And I was happy when i beat it
Damn Electric seaweed
One of the hardest games I ever played. No one in my family beat it and we spent weeks at it.
Played this one during childhood
somewhere in 1990 after I
became a huge fan of The
Original 1987-1996 TV
Animated Series Version,
along with it’s Movie Versions,
Other Video Games and
Next TV Show Versions where
The 2003-2009 Anime Version
and then got owned by
Nickelodeon when we had
The 2012-2017 Computer-
Animated Version, follow by
The 2018-2020 Newer
2D-Style Animated Version
and now a Whole Newer One
based on last year 2024
Movie is coming this year 2024…
However this one is so
frustrating that I couldn’t
beat it at all nor got through
The Underwater Dam Level
by disarming all 8 Bombs
within 2mins in 20secs at all
back then… True Story though
I liked the others the most.
But thank goodness for
Emulators and The
Cowbunga Collection for
Save States and Rewind
Feature though…
I never knew this game was so hard until more recently with the release of the Cowabunga collection? I had copy and thought the difficulty was on par with most NES games of the time. Cool game, but never understood what was up with all the crazy looking enemies that were never featured in the show? lol
AVGN's video of this tough game is hilarious.
In Japan this is called: *Gekikame Ninja Den* rather than TMNT, like the sequel.
From what I remember reading, the reason for that is because TMNT was pretty unknown to Japan at the time (it may have even arrived there before the cartoon did?). By the time the sequel came out, TMNT was definitely well-known in Japan, though.
For all the hate the underwater level gets, I actually remember passing it my first time. Frustrating, sure. But i saw it as just another part of the game. I sensed the difficulty level as soon as I started the game.
I remember my neighbor had a Game Genie and after an entire summer dedicated to this game and only going so far. I begged my neighbor to let me use the Game Genie. Finally was able to see the ending but never felt more empty for cheating.
I hope you get boomerangs there the best secondary weapons by far
Hang on....i may be wrong here but in first few seconds after going down very first sewer you took no damage when that enemy hit you. How come?
best part 11:51
Those eyeball things in the first level still gross me out.
I have this game
Любимая игра на nes!
I'm still baffled by how many weeks this game spent at #1 in Nintendo Power's rankings. It was literally years.
I got curious about those rankings again (I also grew up with Nintendo Power) and found an archive. Looks like it was #1 for two issues in 1990 (Jan/Feb & Mar/Apr) before Super Mario 3's dominance began. There was one month where TMNT 2 was #1 before Mario 3 took back the top spot again. TMNT 1 still remained quite popular for a while though. Us kids didn't care about the quality at the time lol
I played this game. but not all clear because too hard.
This is a minor nitpick, I don't really care that much, and you don't even have to answer but why are y'all redoing the longplays out of order? I remember this being NES longplay #4 for example, by the way keep up the good work, been watching y'all since 2010
2024 is the 40th anniversary of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' debut in the Mirage comic books. They also released a Cowabunga Collection of all of the Konami TMNT games in 2022, so it's now possible to replay them on modern consoles. That is why they are revisiting them.
@@Rocket1377 I know about the anniversary, I was asking in general why the NES longplays were redone in a different order, contra for example was the first longplay but now it's super mario
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES For The Nintendo Entertainment System 35th Anniversary 1989-2024!
Probably one of the few that wasn't much on this game. Liked the arcade beat-em-up ones better
You can just walk over it
You can tell the creators of this game had no clue what sai are for. They're weapon catchers and any attacks made with them are strikes with the butt of the handle so not to break the prongs.
FUCK THIS "GAME"!!!🤣
