Beautiful song, can be difficult with the key changes, but Julie performs it perfectly giving this gem a winner. Very professional already at her young age......just wonderful.
The pianist is Hank Jones of the famous Hall of Fame troika of brothers from Detroit - Thad Jones, trumpeter and soloist (April in Paris) in the 1950's-60's Count Basie Band and Elvin Jones, drummer in the classic John Coltrane Quartet, among other assignments. Hank played with all the jazz giants of his generation and was a CBS staff musician for 19 years.
One does immediately think of Streisand. Being so young you can't blame her but the people handling her should have been more savvy in making sure she came across as more original. Great singer. She didn't really need to do anything but sing and she would have been fine.
Even at 15, Julie was singing with sophistication - a fully formed talent, not at all aspiring to something or anything...but rather she had already arrived and was ready to take charge with a fabulous studio orchestra and one of the all-time great jazz pianists to accompany her. This rates an absolute wow...even some fifty years later
I would not have guessed her as her younger sister I would have just guessed what I actually thought and that is that she's trying to be like Barbra Streisand oh, and we all know there's only one Babs
Astounding! A voice such as hers should have risen to the top. It's all relative, really, and she still has a successful singing career in NYC and Vegas.
I just happened to do a search for Julie Budd after watching an old rerun of a Carol Burnett Show episode. She is the same age as me, and I remember when Liberace, (I think), had her on a TV special. She was supposed to be the next Barbra Streisand. Certainly looks and sounds like her, doesn't she? She had her own voice tho, or maybe it was pitch, but I love the way she sang one of my favorite songs here, Skylark. Geez, I haven't seen Julie Budd perform for approx 50 years!
Julie Budd is an incredible talent. The constant Streisand comments f try on the cheap seats are monotonous. Can’t you just enjoy the talent of the woman without trying to find something silly to say? And btw she does not sound like Streisand.
Julie shines exceptionally when she sings ballads. Later in her career she would not reach this level of excellence. And I just wonder why that was? Her stage presence here is great.
I have to agree with you. Her mannerisms, body language and hand movements are Streisand all the way. She has a lovely voice and I can’t help but think she might have risen higher if she stayed more true to herself.
One of the hazards of a vocalist so young and so talented is the tendency to want to emulate your favorite iconic artist of the time. No matter how great you are, if you sound like, dress like and move like that iconic artist, the audience will knowledge your talent; but they’ll always gravitate more to the artist you’re emulating. In the entertainment business, imitators are usually forgotten in time (Jane Oliver comes to mind). The saving grace for Julie is that she has had a successful career as a singer since her Ed Sullivan appearances having performed in the greatest venues in the world. And she’s quite deserving of that! 🎶🏆
